A cop killed a person and the cop is innocent?? That doesn't make any sense.
Cop did not just pull out his gun and shoot a person. It a justified shooting. It's probably one of the very few shooting from LEOs on the last ten years and one of the one hand count fatal ones.
What do you mean by "justified shooting"? I just read the site (poorly translated to English) and it states the cop pulled a gun and shot......then that shot killed an innocent man.
Am I wrong?
Pitch dark night, 30km from the border, rocky terrain. 2 BP and 1 cop are chasing some ~3 person group of suspects who refused to identify and do not respond to verbal commands. The migrant group runs under a bridge and the cops follow, only to stumble upon a 50+ people group who refuse to respond. One BP fires a warning shot in the air. The shot ricochets from the arc of the bridge and hits a migrant. The migrant died on his way to the hospital.

Looks like the police officer shot a gun that accidentally killed an innocent person. That would get you a jail term in Canada. It wouldn't be murder as it's not pre-meditated but it would be manslaughter, a very serious charge.
Additionally, I think it's comical that cops fire warning shots up in the air in Bulgaria, they are not cowboys. How is that legal? (I checked US and Canadian laws and firing warning shots by police officers is VERY illegal and will land you in prison). Anyways a very strange outcome, that cop should have been charged, lost his job and his gun (obviously he can't shoot properly).
Warning shots illegal in US... Bitch, please.
Oh, yeah right, I remember, nypd don't do warning. They just go straight for the headshot.

Wait, I thought we were supposed to be all smug about our superiority as Europeans and everything, not use the US as an excuse?
Yes. Headshot sure. Warning shots, I think you can save that for a Western cowboy movie.

(I checked US and Canadian laws and firing warning shots by police officers is VERY illegal and will land you in prison)
Well yeah, warning shots in the US are straight to the torso :P
2 Making clear and understandable verbal warning of the intention of the guard to use firearms, which may be accompanied by his legitimacy as an official performing his duties in security. Making a verbal warning in the opinion of some authors where not achieve the desired result (termination of the attack), it is necessary to duplicate production and a warning shot in a safe direction, which is defined as a final warning. As rightly stated in this connection, it practically is not always possible with a view specific conditions in individual cases. Such a warning is justified only in terms of what can be achieved respectable striker and demonstrate determination to use firearms to stop the attack, in addition, allow time for the attacker to execute warning to abandon the assault or unlawful behavior and obeyed his warning to the request;
That's for armed guards, I imagine police officers on duty follow the same protocol. Now, technically speaking you could read this in 2 ways - he fucked up by shooting in the air as a final warning. However, another interpretation would be - he could've simply shot straight to the perpetrators since he was in a situation where a warning shot could have adverse effects.
Many people in Bulgaria blamed him for shooting up knowingly he's under the bridge. I think that considering the circumstances, he took the more humane approach. Again, he was perfectly in his right to shoot straight at them in this situation. It's sad that the bullet bounced off the wall and killed a person but his actions were the best possible scenario if the information we've been given is accurate.
I understand that this is a difficult situation but I wholeheartedly disagree with the cop's use of the gun. It's not like these guys were armed and robbing a bank or raping a girl.
This cop is a criminal in my eyes. He should have known better and acted professionally.
(I actually still can't take Police officers very seriously here in Bulgaria, overweight, smelly, chain smoking in the silly Ladas and still corrupt as fuck..and most of all, incredibly unprofessional and lazy...but that's for a whole other story).
The actual shot was outside of the bride on an slope. There are pics of the incident, including presumed ricoche impact point.
And what is the procedure when 13 people (Who don't speak your language) start approaching you and don't respond to verbal warning?
You call for backup and try to diffuse the situation verbally. Not shoot your gun up in the air like a foolish cretin.
And if you absolutely have to fire a warning shot....DO IT PROPERLY and not like a 3 year old child.
Lmao. This is an unbelievably dumb post. They tried to diffuse the sitiation verbally, it was impossible. They felt threatened since it was a group of 50+ migrants vs 3 cops. This isn't the movies you ignorant twat.
Bullshit, none of that happened.

So, they don't speak your language, but have to respond to your verbal warnings, got it.
To answer your question: no, you don't kill people for approaching you, no matter how foreign and dark-skinned they are.
Even if you believe the ricochet-theory(and if you do, I know a Nigerian prince in peril who wants a word with you), the "warning shot" was completely unjustified.
They don't speak the language, but when a man in uniform is shouting at you I think the picture is clear. So what do you do?
The only poor decision he made (If we consider this version to be true) was firing under the bridge.
And this is exactly the decision he has to be held accountable for.
Well technically he was and they found him not guilty.
I agree with you %100. I am very surprised so many people here have taken the police officer's side. Bizarre.
Heavy bias. Open the comments under any news article mentioning cops asking for higher salaries/benefits, and I guarantee you that every comment will be about how corrupt and untrustworthy the police force is.
But when a migrant is killed, suddenly the police is trustworthy again. If the court rules in their favor, why question the judgement? I mean, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, right? And migrants are the real enemy here, not the armed police force that acts like 007 and gets away with flimsy excuses.
I don't find the police force trustworthy here at all (especially in Sunny Beach). And (off topic) whenever I see them standing around in their droopy attire smoking in front of their Ladas I look for a camera crew because I think someone is filming a police comedy from the 1950s.
It was justified according to the prosecution's decision, your argument is invalid.
The argument is very valid and the prosecutor's decision is incredibly unjust.
A defenseless man was needlessly killed by a police officer. The police officer was not charged with anything. That is not justice.

Cop was protecting our borders. He was doing his job. He is not guilty. End of story.
He murdered a person, plain and simple.
Criminal or not, I hope this doesn't set a prescident and these gun wielding idiots won't start shooting at everyone who they think might be commuting a crime.
Yes, because of somebody guarding the border from a violent migrant, cops nationwide will now start shooting everyone.
IntroMatt logic.
Protecting our borders? WTF are you talking about? Bulgarian criminal law allows police to shoot people at crossings? I call Bullshit.

The cop killed a criminal according to Bulgarian law:
When you go to a foreign country follow their laws and police instructions because you won't get a special treatment.
Cops can kill criminals in Bulgaria? That's the first I hear of this. If that was the truth about 1/2 the Bulgarian business owners would be dead. Very scary.
After re-reading the article I don't see that the person killed being a criminal. There must be something I am missing here, sorry.
They crossed the border illegally which means they committed a crime, which makes them criminals. And IIRC cops can shoot at criminals if they refuse to follow orders from the officer. Can't remember where to find the law so I can quote it word for word, and I'm too lazy to look.
You seem to ignore the fact that they ran away from the police.
You do not recall correctly. It is not the policemen's job to decide who is criminal and who is not. They are not qualified to. That is the job for a court of law. They are allowed to use deadly force if their or somebody else's life is in danger.
Are you referring to me talking about the law which allows police to shoot at people? Or to me saying that committing a crime makes you a criminal?
Both. Innocent until proven guilty. Does that ring a bell? Only a judge can say if sonebody is a criminal or not.
They crossed the border without notifying the authorities and they refused to co-operate with the authorities once found. I'm pretty sure both are illegal, which makes it a crime. And a criminal is someone who commits a crime.
Yeah but this is a he-say, she-say situation. This is why we have law and judges. Judges decide if somebody committed a crime, not the police. The police's job is to apprehend suspects, not to administer punishment as they see fit.
I would suggest saying that to the next attacked policeman - to not react back because he has to first go ask the court if an attack against him makes the perpetrator a criminal. When the court sentences him the policeman should be then able to apprehend him. If the court speeds up maybe 3-4 weeks would be enough.
The whole job of a policeman is to determine if a person is conducting criminal activity and apprehend them. That is why "theoretically" they are given an amount of authority to enforce the law. The court decides whether that was justified or not.
In this case the cop saw a group of men passing the border illegally and decided that was against чл. 279 НК.
Well, I guess I was wrong. I was using a more general definition, not a technical one.
Thanks, I'll try to keep that in mind.
Exactly.
A drunk driver is committing a crime (a much greater crime than some poor soul crossing a border), does the cop have a right to hit them, shoot them?? or? If so, we would have 100 people dead here every single night....
They're not criminals, they're just some folks crossing borders in search of a better life.
They were running because they were scared of crooked, corrupt and obviously very incompetent cops. I would be running too if I didn't have some cash in my pockets to "bribe the cops away".
One innocent man died and the shitty cop that killed him remains on the force "protecting" us. What a fucked up country this is.
They crossed the border illegally ,they committed a crime. If committing a crime doesn't make you a criminal, what does? If you have no money and rob someone, would that make you a criminal?
How do they know the cop is crooked? Why would they think he's crooked? I know Bulgaria has a bad reputation, but that doesn't mean we can ignore the law here because the people in charge are bad.
Although yeah, it's bad that the cop got nothing for it. I expected at least some form of disciplinary or gun usage training.
A Canadian with an expired visa sitting at a bar in Sunny Beach is also commiting a crime. Should forgetful tourists start fearing for their lives? Should shoplifters, tax evaders?
If they ignore the authorities when confronted, they probably should. You seem to be very good ignoring that.
There were 3 officers and 50 13(I misrememberd the number) people who didn't co-operate until the shot was fired. Physically restraining them would have been impossible, so they had to do something. He mishandled the gun, but he had the right to use it.
Why does he go free? A police officer mishandling a gun and killing a person in the process doesn't carry any criminal recourse in BG? It's just a funny, silly incident where some irrelevant brown skinned immigrant commiting a despicable crime gets shot and killed? Lol lol, lol..lol.

Yes, I was wondering that as well. How can cops just shoot criminals when they feel like it (AND these guys weren't even criminals)?
This was a cut and dry case of manslaughter and the police officer should be in prison.
