memphis depay: his role moving forward (self.reddevils)

I feel like people are either discounting Memphis entirely or reducing his role to a bit part player. Both of which I think are wrong.

Real Madrid under JM thrived with what you would call a 3 roaming CAM attack, with Ronaldo, DiMaria/James, Bale all switching roles throughout the game.

United did this for a while and was hugely successful.

I see a real situation where we play this way with Memphis becoming a more important piece than he was last year.

With Zlatan up front, supported by the pace and potential attacking prowess of Martial, Memphis, Harry Micky Taryan, we could and should be devastating on the counter.

Add some nice extra pieces, like stability at LB and RB and nail down a consistent CM partnership and we could be flying..

Consistently? I don't think so. I remember Rooney playing brilliantly in that role against Arsenal one time.

Playing the false 9 requires a tremendous amount of intelligence. The only false 9 in world football is Messi.

Actually I think he can. He likes making runs and can hold on the play pretty well due to his build, and he's pretty good at quick passing and one-two's.

Memphis should be given a look on the right side. Mkhi can play in the middle as well. Excited to see what happens regardless of what may come.

That's why I believe, if he improves his work rate, he can be a really good #10. Makes good runs and doesn't really get bullied off the ball fast. His decision making has to improve since he'll have less time to think about what to do and he can swap around with Martial and Mkhi.

It's not the first time that a player has looked a shadow of his former self in his first season in the Premier League. He didn't do himself any favours though with the customised M7 Rolls and other things coming out in the media. I have faith in him and I hope he'll be able to show Mourinho what kind of player he can be. If he fails again next season it will probably be his last season at the club.
