There aren't even any mushrooms that spawn near the Hydra. He followed you, hiding in the shadows, and waited for the right moment to punch the shit out of you. Aggro range was awesome in DS1.

That Shroom is like the dad from those Taken movies. You went to his tree, messed with his family, and now are going to learn about his certain set of skills. Also, was positive it was going to be a Clam attack, he/she must have slowly strolled out of that tree and missed the bonfire.

tree

Huh

There is a shroom in a tree in ashen lake if I recall corectly.

How the hell do you guys remember all this?

Do you even Dark Souls?

Lol no but I was curious as to why so many of you remember so much of a 7 year old game.

Maybe it's time for me to try it?

You really, really need to. Don't fear the stigmas. You'll die, die, and die again - Just makes your victories all the better. Prepare to die, prepare to cry, and you should prepare to buy.

My computer can't even run it at more than 10 frames per second and I still have a blast with it.

That's hardcore slideshow mode, adds to the challenge

My buds and I have a game we play when we get together; we pick up every item and guess what it is, if we're wrong, we take a shot. Fun times.

Dark souls is heavily repetitive (in a good way). Often replaying the game you'll find new goodies or just memorize the stuff you really really want to get quickly. Along the way you just learn how to avoid (and thus the location) of a lot of shit.

The game can be realistically completed in like 30-45 minutes by an expert who is not specifically trying to speed run. It can also take someone 100 hours to learn all there is to know about the game in one play. I mean to show an example of how small the game truly can be when stripped away of all of the learning curve and exploration but also how vast the game can be when you just put pieces of the puzzle together, learn a boss fight, or completely exhaust exploration in new areas.

When you have to run the map a few times because things or gravity kills you. You remember where things are located. Plus the game rewards more playthroughs with different endings and magic and weapons. Demon's Souls you needed boss souls to level some weapons so you needed to beat the game like 5 times to max out weapons. You could run through it killing everything by the end.

I've played through the game 5 times and i still enjoy playing it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a challenging game.

It's pretty memorable, the entire game is memorable.

Only 5 years old thank you very much!

Well, I for one played it not that long ago during global restart day as did many many other people. Also it is just a fucking awesome and memorable game. I play through it at least once a month.

The game puts you in a state of awareness that forces your brain to memorize the surroundings long term. Alot of people could tell you just about everything about dark souls that they experienced after a single playthrough.

[–]Hypocritical_Oath 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

We played it a lot. Most DS veterans probably still have the whole game memorized. Plus it has a lot of replayability, not like people only played it seven years ago. In fact there was a global restart day like a week or two ago, where everyone makes a new dark souls character to make the game feel like it did on release.

Traumatic memories have a way of resurfacing...

In reality, it's because that area is such a huge emotional gut-punch that most of us remember it for a variety of reasons; it's an amazing and pretty awesome area with incredible scenery, the conclusion of a story ending in multiple cut onions (literally and figuratively), a covenant with a deep backstory, and to top it off it's at the end of a hidden journey with a lot of dangerous enemies and leaps of faith.

Those unlucky enough to find it before they had the lordvessel curse that tree to the ends of time. People remade characters rather than fight their way back up from the heart of the world.

The mushroom guys are kinda famous in that regard; they're the literal 'so slow but so powerful' enemy trope; that windup punch pretty much kills anyone who hasn't sunk at least 1/3 of their levelups into hp. The character in the gif is using the best weight/defense ratio armor, the ubiquitous zweihander (considered DS easy-mode by many) and the grass crest shield; he had everything going for him and got suckerpunched as we all have at one point or another.

Dark Souls is the kind of game that teaches you lessons about yourself... it's hard to forget a journey like that.

it's kind of magical how easy it is to remember the area layouts and enemy placements.

For me is a 70 hour old game. Since I never played before.

Because the level design and detail in the Souls games (except maybe the detail part in 2) is absolutely amazing, and you go through every area so many times that you pick up on even the smallest details.

Because death is the greatest teacher.

I've memorized literally every single corner of the entire game. Once, my friend didn't believe me, so I described all of the Asylum to him. He wasn't very happy that I wasted 10 minutes of conversation but he hasn't forgotten it.

Dark Souls is etched into my brain. I only beat the game once, but I remember every inch.

Any time I get the craving to boot up Skyrim again for some roleplay goodness I remember that (at least for me) Dark Souls is just better at it(All armor is viable and fashionable, you can get almost any weapon you want shortly after beating the tutorial). Suddenly you've beaten the game 5 times and realize you know far more about a single game than you probably should.

Honestly? Because I didn't want to get my face bashed in the next time I went through the area.

Games that follow the Souls formula of Learn or Suffer make sure you remember what it feels like to really crave knowledge. You remember where things are because you either had to learn that bit to beat it or you were so used to learning things that it only took once to remember.

There are multiple shrooms in that tree. You have to go through the tree to even get to ash lake and it's a particularly difficult area to get though. It's easy to remember in the same way that we remember enemy placement in any other game.

Theres also a tree after that in between the bonfire and the dragon with a shroom in it. But i dont know if that one can follow you haha

Oh, fuck, let me tell you, THAT PIECE OF SHIT CAN, MAN. If you recall, to get out of that tree, you walk out of a hole and walk down mushrooms on the side of it. Below you is water.

So I don't know if I forgot to kill him or what, but this HUGE FUCKING ASSHOLE FOLLOWED ME OUT. Basically, I dropped down to the mushrooms and walked a bit down them to get Great Magic Barrier. As I was reading the description, I guess he fell out onto the mushrooms to follow me. I didn't hear him, either- I SAW HIM at the edge of the screen, winding up for a punch.

Now, remember, they're super tanky, and slow to attack, but knock you down. In this case, into the water below, which means death.

So I fucking get spooked as hell. I close the menu instantly and roll into him to dodge his punch, and I'm just in a panic as I'm killing him. I managed to pull it off, but damn, it was scary.

Don't forget about the frog on a log in the bottom of the sea, either.

I'm not sure, but I think you are thinking this is the Hydra in Darkroot Basin. Instead this is the Hydra in Ash Lake, and there are indeed Mushroom spawns in Ash Lake.

Then I gave that mushroom way too much credit. I thought he was a master assassin, not a wandering boxer with a temper.

It's still pretty far from the bottom of the tree to the Hydra though. A good 2 minute walk for a Mushroom.

where was this boss in DS1 i had about 160 hours or so and i never saw that.

Okay, so in the poision lake near Quelaag, take a left from that bonfire and go up a root, and there will be a chest with a plank shield. To the left is a illusory wall with another chest, and behind that is ANOTHER illusory wall. I don't want to spoil the area, but it is big and full of shit.

wow, that's awesome years after playing the game through i find out there's another area i missed, can't wait to see it.

It's fucking brutal. Getting down to the area he's in is a fucking chore. Not trying spoil anything, but let's just say some curse breakers might not be a bad idea.

It's fucking brutal.

should have been the tag line for the entire game.

DS1 curses are brutal even by 'Souls standards. Have fun making it back with %50 health through an incredibly frustrating area to get to one of two places where you can break a curse.

Getting down there isn't so bad, but if he goes there before Anor Londo he's gonna have one hell of a time getting back.

I had no issues getting down but I just kind of kept running and ignored almost everything.

It would be in your best interest to get the lordvessel first of course. Getting outta BlightTown without it is one thing. Getting out of the place OP's in is another.

I went down that bitch right after blighttown. When I eventually got the lordvessel after climbing outta that hell hole, I felt so cheated...

There is actually a ladder to go back up! I found this out after getting a lvl 16 character from start to go and get that Greatsword! Absolutely haram when I found it though, it's just a pain in the butt to get back up

Yeah, that was my point. Pain in the butt :b

Yeah, and it's my favorite area in the game. Holds my favorite covenant, as well, but it's a mostly dead covenant. Thankfully you can get its rewards through offline play (FUCK THE DRAKES), though, and its PvP is basically identical to the Red Sign Soapstone.

I came up with a really convoluted, but fast way to do that drake run. My build was STR/INT, mainly using the great club and oolacile ivory catalyst.

I'd go down the elevator into the valley of the drakes, run across the bridge while just dodging the drakes, get to the ladder that leads up to the red tearstone ring and start climbing (sounds impossible with the drakes all alive, but it's easy if you just go straight there)

By the time I'd get to the top of the ladder, all of the drakes would be grouped at the bottom of the ladder. I'd cast Crystal Magic Weapon, Fall Control, and do the Dragon Roar, switch to 2hand on my Great Club, then do a super high falling attack onto all of the drakes. You can basically kill all of them with that one falling attack and it takes no time at all.

I remember it being over 2000 damage to each of the drakes, I don't remember the exact number.

For extra fun, try racing to the end of the area. There is a really cool surprise at the end and you get to see an amazing sight of you don't kill that hydra immediately.

I managed to find it because I found that area after I had been to Sen's Fortress (First mimic) so, I attacked the chest. Hit the wall cause greatswords. Then there was another chest. So naturally, I attacked that one too. Hit the second wall.

Only from soft would put arguably the coolest area in the game behind not one but two illusory walls

oh it's the ash lake hydra not the boss one.. i was sure the place didn't look like that

Wait, what?

Because there's two hydras.

One in ash lake, accessed from near Quelaag as described by alteredego, and one near darkroot basin, near where you fight Great Wolf Sif.

I missed Ash Lake, tbh, but darkroot basin Hydra was one of the most frightening things for me . . . you can see it from so far away, atop the cliffs near the forest covenant.

Why do you say "Wait what" like it's incomprehensible someone could miss an optional area behind 2 illusory walls.

The Darkroot basin one is near a plot boss, and is not behind any illusory walls.

[–]Aikidi 5

It's also basically required to kill it to get to the DLC, or at least run past it real fast.

It's sort of near a plot boss. And that bridge/ladder as well as the cliff down are damn well hidden for new players.

You can see the hydra without going down the ladder, though. The cliffs near the mushrooms give a wonderful view of WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT. DO I HAVE TO KILL THAT. WAT.

And then there's the path down from Andre of Astora, down from the undead parish. Missing the wolf ring? Yes, absolutely. Missing the path from the garden to the basin? There's no hidden path there . . .

Yea, that path is pretty open, but honestly you can see how some people miss it

Because 160 hours I presume

Aggro range was actually not the best. Black Knights had some incredible aggro range tho. It's actually been getting a bit better each game. Running past every enemy to the boss wasn't too hard in DS1

No, it's not too hard in Dark Souls. I agree it has gotten better in the later games. I loved Bloodborne because most of the enemies wouldn't chase you for too long. I still say "Bloodborne strategy" whenever I run through an area in DS3.

LOL, how the hell did you get a mushroom over there?

Did you kill his kids?

I was thinking the same thing, but this is the Ash Lake hydra with mushrooms semi nearby.

If I recall correctly, the Hydra is down a long ladder from the area where the mushrooms are at. I'm not sure how far the mushroom would have to have gone if it didn't use the ladder. Though it has hands so maybe it did.

There are two different hydras. The one on the surface you're right, that would be a hell of a trip. The other one is past Blighttown and the Great Hollow in Ash Lake and there it would be like a minute or two walk for the mushroom.

Oh I didn't know there were two hydras. I only knew about the one where the crystal golems are.

Ash Lake is one of the most beautiful areas in the game, and completely optional, well hidden, and extremely easy to miss.

I mean... it's not even "easy to miss". It's hidden to the point that I don't understand how anyone ever found it, honestly.

I'd recommend going on a little pilgrimage... after getting the Lordvessel.

I did it with no lordvesssel

climbing that fucking tree was the bane of my existence

I'm guessing Aggression Mod, hugely expands the aggro range of enemies.

Mushroom: "Hail Hydra!"

Cut off one head, a mushroom takes its place!

I love the way the mushroom just looks into the camera after it backstabs you. Just staring into your ever darkening soul, and letting you know that it enjoyed putting its own mark on it.

Friend of mine gave me this game on steam awhile ago and i just got around to really playing and my god idk you guys do it

i already have 26 hours into and i still don't know if i like it but i keep playing it

I don't know if I enjoy it but I have like 70 hours on this play and two bosses left.

idk how many bosses i have left but i just took out this spider lady

I bet you level dex. What rings you got?

[–]Aikidi 2

Was I not supposed to level Dex?

Just don't tell anyone you leveled that up

[–]Aikidi 0

But I was a dex build ninja ;_;

I think they are referring to the Giant Dad meme. Spend time on /r/darksouls. You'll figure it out.

[–]Aikidi 0

Did you not see my black flame that means new game +?

No worries, it's a meme in the Souls community. Enjoy

Well there are people who legitimately think leveling dex is a waste in general but they're flat-out wrong. The only time you don't want to level dex is if the weapon you're using has no scaling in Dex or poor (D or E) scaling.

Other commenters were right. Just a meme. I love dex builds.

You don't really like it until your second play through. Once you know the basics and what you have to do, then you can explore/experiment/test your skill

yeah i get that right now i'm feeling like i'm leveling up wrong or something

If it's DS1 never lvl up Resistance. It's practically useless.

STR&DEX= More Physical attack

INT=Sorceries(mainly offensive)

FAITH=Miracles(half support, half offensive)

Pyromancy damage is based on no stat besides the pyromancy flame flame lvl.

Find one weapon you like and you stick with it for the rest of your playthrough

Hope this helps :)

well this is how i am right now using a uchigatana +10 but i was thinking i wanted to go into magic stuff

Get your Dex to 40 if ya want versatality with more weapons. Intelligence after too maybe.

What are you, a casual?

I didn't lvl mine up. Anyways, wat rings u got bicth?

Well, using one weapon has exceptions. The Broken Straight Sword isn't exactly the best option. Normal Straight Swords and such are likewise. Balder Swag Sword, on the other hand...

Well, that's why I said find one he likes. :b

Like /u/KnightServos said, do not level resistance. Ever.

Get the Drake Sword off of Hellkite's tail, that will hold you over a little while, but it doesn't scale with stats, so it will never get any better.

Get lucky and get the Black Knight Sword off the Black Knight in Undead Burg (stronger, but random drop, and slower R2), or if that doesn't drop, rush the Hellkite Bridge and get the Claymore (weaker until you level the shit out of it, then one of the best weapons in the game, guaranteed to be there, fast and strong R2). People say the Claymore is the better, but you get lucky and get that Black Knight Sword early and upgrade it to +5 with Twinkling Titanite from Snuggly the Crow + other sources early game, and it can carry you through the entire game.

Get your vitality, endurance, strength, and dex to 20, then get your endurance and vitality up even more. Get a shield with good stability (determines how much endurance it takes to soak a hit) and 100% physical damage block, and things will be much easier.

I don't get that at all, nothing beats my first play through of a Souls game when everything is new and I don't know what's around the corner.

I felt like that on DS1. But now that I know how to play a souls game DS3 is amazing on the first play.

Also I like making challenge runs, which requires me to know most of what's in the world.

Yeah admittedly - as much as I have immensely enjoyed every Souls game since - nothing can quite recapture that first play through of Dark Souls 1. I'm hoping mechanically From's next game is completely different mechanically but still big on exploration and atmosphere so I can experience that flavour of game but as a complete newcomer. I started playing Shadow Tower: Abyss on the PS2 the other day and although it's aged a little rough, it's still fun and giving me that new Souls feeling.

The key to playing the game successfully is to actually take your time and observe the bosses and their patterns.

Easier said than done, but they all have patterns in how they attack and how they respond to your position.

For fun, look up LobosJR on YouTube. He's a twitch streamer that made his name on challenge runs in dark souls. a lot of crazy stuff that he makes look easy bit it does help you in terms of learning things you may not know.

This area is the most annoying of all DkS as it is a real pain to get down there... BUT once you are down there, and if you know your way around it, it is the most rewarding part of that game!

Just, for the love of the ember, wait until after getting the Lordvessel. Unless you are a veteran.

I went down there as a low-level character without the Lordvessel once. First time going through the place and I had no idea what it was. Half the monsters I just had to run away from, leaving them alive behind me, and stopping at every bonfire along the way. The Ash Lake was mesmerizing and I was tremendously excited to be going through an area I'd never seen before in several playthroughs (and having done multiple playthroughs was why I was so comfortable rushing the area). Then I reached the end, and realized the only way back out was to painstakingly go back up the way I came.

So I deleted the character.

Same, up to that point every area in the game was connected to more than another one, so after getting cursed trying to get up the damn tree I decide to press on and keep going on the sand trail, whit fucking hungry hungry clams chasing me and the Hydra casually leaping from one side to another just when I thought it was done casually hydro pumping my ass. Then I got to the other bonfire, of course I activated it happy to replenish my estus and ready to press forward. There was no forward, of course. Both my roomies can confirm that as the day I kept screaming in disbelief at the screen while trying to get the hell out from that forsaken place. It took a lot of sweat and I called every single thing on my way there names I'm not going to repeat, but I did it. Got back there 40 or so levels later, decimated the Hydra without taking damage than proceeded to farm me some Cloysters on steroids, good day.

I made a strength pure character to wield the zweihander (no armor, it weighed too much), and right after beating the gargoyles, I went down to get the dragon tail longsword via the masterkey. I realized right before getting down the tree that I couldn't use the bonfire before the hydra, because I wasn't fucking climbing that giant fuck again.

After 10+ attempts, I made it down to ash lake, but I was out of estus. And I couldn't fight the hydra or rest, so I sprinted the entire fucking thing. I nearly died a couple times due to that hydra's hydro blast and those clam fuckers.

But I did finally get that dragon tail greatsword. And then I realized I needed 50 strength to wield it. That was basically the last thing I did on that character, though I did homeward bone my way back to the top of the tree.

Two-handing does double your strength.

1.5x, not double. You need 34 strength to two-hand it.

Yeah, that.

Which would be easy to get on a strength character.

The atmosphere is so extreme in that area, the music really sets the tone

The best part about this track is that it doesn't trigger until you look up in Ash Lake.

Knowing the lore is also interesting. The trees literally hold up the surface of the world. IIRC, the ash is the remains of all of the dragons killed by Gwyn.

Wow. Yeah it really does make you feel minuscule with the music and big fucking dragon and trees. What an awesome game

Just, for the love of the ember, wait until after getting the Lordvessel. Unless you are a veteran.

I rushed it once to get the dragon's head ASAP as a starting character. It was OK.

Bonfire at the top of the tree, then use homeward bone

What about Blighttown and Tomb of Giants? Those are probably the most frustrating gaming experiences of my life.

I made so many runs down there for the duplication glitch. Just don't touch the bonfire down there and then die once you get the head.

Ash Lake was the part of that game that first made me really go "Oh, wow..."

It was the point I realized I was in a true fantasy game, not just a weird medieval-theme game with the occasional beastie.

YOU NEVER DID LEARN TO MIND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

Yeah that mushroom came a real long way to make that punch

Never played this game and feel like it was the right choice. All the gifs piss me off.

Honestly it's fair. Almost everything can be planned for ahead of time if you're paying attention. If you don't pay attention you're going to get wrecked by a boulder falling down the stairs though.

It's exactly what your parents always said: "Kick the shrooms or they'll kick you back."

You got knocked the FUCK out man!!

Never played DarkSouls, wondering if killing that mushroom would make the game worth it

I want to BE the mushroom.

I'm on my first playthrough and am exactly at this point. I haven't actually fought the hydra yet though. I would've never expected the mushroom

Should have gotten up on that hydra's back.

Too bad mine keeps crashing.

The game? Try asking for help over on one of the Dark Souls subreddits. /r/darksouls

I did. No luck.

Well, I don't know what to say. Uninstall/reinstall. Installing DSFix is also something most people like to do.

Source is from this playthrough by OverTheGun.

Lots of great moments like this throughout.

[–]Mitoni 0

did the game... just mushroom slap you?

It fucking punched him. And stole his HP and sent it into the negative hundreds.

Mushrooms don't fuck around man. They ain't here to play.

hit him with ur sword steve

Ain't that a bitch

Every time I think, 'I should buy this game', I start to watch some gameplay footage and remember why I haven't bought this game.

That Mushroom walked pretty fucking far

Ashen lake hydra not darkroot basin. Still a decent walk, but not as crazy as darkroot basin would be.

Yeah I know,it still walked all the way from the great hollow tho

Yeah, I've actually seen videos of them getting stuck trying to leave the great hollow. I wonder how it got through.

[–]my_state_of_hate 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

"Haha! This game is hard!"

You missed the bonfire, dude.

That beach, like so many things in that game, scared the living shit out of me.

I mean, I remember finding the Hydra in the forest, and that scared me, but coming to that beach and seeing like three or four hydras...well there's only so much one man can take.

Mushroom man is a long way from home.

"Dark souls is hard! Karma please."

Boy, you guys are programmed as fuck.

And this is the game where if you die, you start the game over, correct? Controllers would be thrown and TVs would be broken.

You respawn at the last checkpoint and lose experience/currency.

Ah well that isn't bad. Never played it myself but I've heard a lot of rage stories.

I always heard the same. Finally decided to pick it up.

It is not as bad as everyone made it out to be. It isn't unfair for the sake of being mean, it is just old-school Super Mario Brothers, NES-era hard.

It is unforgiving, it does not hold your hand, but being good at it gives you a real sense of accomplishment that I have not felt since the 8-bit/16-bit era.

[–]Lovv 0

If you have never played dark souls before iudex is insane. You basically load up the game and get smacked by a 2x4.

I was having difficulty with shitty hollows and it's teaching you how to attack and use the camera and "oh this guy looks like some kind of boss... can't be too bad this early. Wham.

Then you walk up the path and find the sword master. He looks easy compared to that boss...

Yeah Dark Souls is known for being relatively difficult.

Its worth it! I just got into it. Its hilariously infuriating!

If you're a scrub and can't reach the first bonfire then yeah you start over.

Any Witcher II fans just seeing the Kayran?

That boss is actually really easy - the boss doesn't hit you if you're close enough.

The shrooms aren't anywhere near that area as well. Only crystal golems.

This is actually the Hydra in Ash Lake, where there are also Mushroom spawns.

I stand corrected.

Which boss were you thinking of?

There are two hydra mini bosses. This is the one in Ash Lake. And there are indeed giant mushroom guys nearby along with basiliks.

Why can't we ever have a "Dark Souls in a nutshell" gif of someone totally owning the baddies? More like "You suck in a nutshell"
