He believes leaks are a "disservice to fans" and argued, "We are very specific about what we show and when we show it, because getting people hyped for a game all the way up to the moment where they can play it [is] all part of the experience."

This is the danger to you, the consumer. The hype. AAA devs know they can package a turd and we'll not only pay $60 for it but angrily defend how much fun we had playing with that turd for years afterward. With hype. You want the quality of gaming to improve? Don't get hyped up.

You know, whenever people on Reddit talk about people buying games on hype and getting mad about it, I always think one thing. Hype exists for every form of entertainment, tv shows, books, movies. But only in the video game industry the hardcore fanbase encourages not getting excited.

I don't think hype in and of itself is a bad thing. Getting excited and discussing something with people who are also excited is fun and healthy for a game.

But it can lead to some things that aren't so good. Like when people build up false hope about something a developer mentions long before the game launches. It's as silly as believing word for word what a presidential candidate says 6 months before they're elected.

It can also build up these expectations in your head that are impossible to meet, which just leads to a needless feeling of disappointment when you finally get to play it.

By all means, get excited. Stay excited. Just temper expectations for imperfect things made by fallible people.

Actually if you peek over at r/movies they're just as salty as people here. I think it has more to so with the abundance of options and the comparatively small amount of time we all have to enjoy these things. People don't want to admit that they just don't have time to play every game or watch every movie if they're not super interested, so instead they dogpile in top of whatever popular criticism is currently floating, and feel sophisticated for not participating.

What?

When I grew up my parents always told me to never believe advertising.

Because you're usually not paying $60 to purchase a book, movie, or tv show. You can afford to get hyped up over something that barely costs anything.

The gaming industry's lack of respect for the consumer has made us cautious, perhaps over-cautious, and definitely over-cynical. It's a sad state of affairs, I agree, but it's somewhat justified.

Movie tickets + something to eat easily costs 40$. So a game isn't much more expensive.

[–]SophisticatedDalek [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

I mean if you go crazy yeah. I go to movies all the time for like $12 for a night viewing. Then soda and popcorn are like $8, though I generally just eat before and then maybe get a soda for $5 or sneak some in.

[–]blupeli [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Yeah sneaking some in is much cheaper. But in my country a movie ticket is around 20$. :(

Your movie ticket is around $20 and games are still $60, or do you need to scale the price of those up as well for the sake of your argument?

I'm sorry but this is just as sensationalist as the worst devs out there. Plenty of devs put their heart and soul into genuinely great games which they believe will bring lots of joy and fun to their fans. There's nothing wrong with them trying to get their fans hyped for something they've poured their heart into creating and it's incredibly myopic to equate the behavior of all devs because some are bad eggs

[–]Psychotrip [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Yeah, I think there's a middle-ground to be found here. Gamers have definitely become bitter and cynical, but I understand where it comes from. At the same time, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that gaming is about fun. I think it's good to be cautious, but it's a sad state of affairs to see people telling us not to get excited, even if I understand where the sentiment comes from.

My problem is that they want to get people hype by what might as well not be what is the final product, or an elaborate painted up set that might be in the game, but not as it appears. Those few bad ones ruin a lot of what makes the many other ones great.

defend how much fun we had playing with that turd for years afterward.

Fuck us for actually playing games for fun, right?

What the fuck are you going on about?

Buying a game in manufactured hype, alright fine, but are you really trying to say that people will enjoy a game on manufactured hype? Did it occur to you that maybe that means those people just liked the game?

"Stupid idiots, buying games and then being stupid enough to actually enjoy them! Why can't everyone just stop liking what I don't like?"
