I've actually never been to comfest despite moving here over ten years ago.
As an outsider it just sounds like a dirty hippee fest. But really what is it?
What goes on down there other than week advocates, body paint, and ugly boobs? (I'm purposefully being obtuse here, but really this is all I ever hear about)
Is there special food vendors? Beer specials? Bands? I really no nothing. Someone educate me
People generally do comfest wrong I think. It's really just what you make of it. For me, I like going there in the evening with a few friends, sitting in the grass and watching live bands play. Saw some good jazz bands a few years back (the past few years the weather has been shitty). Its just a chill place to go and hang out, nothing spectacular. It seems to bother a lot of people tho
Usually a few stages with live bands (saw The Floorwalkers at Comfest several years ago and really enjoyed their show). A lot of food trucks set up along one side of the park. The usual sort of beer tent setup with several to choose from. Several long aisles of vendors selling art, clothing, the usual stuff you'd expect (pipes/glassware), but also some unusual vintage things. One year I found a vendor selling 1960s-1970s beer bottles cans - most were empty, but some were actually unopened! Overall it's not an incredible, life-changing festival, but people on this sub seem to take it way too seriously. It's a fun way to check out some art, listen to live bands, maybe grab a few drinks, and do some people watching.

you forgot about the topless women.

It actually sounds horrible. I mean maybe if you are a bum with no upward motivation. But really if all sounds like a reason for dirty people to get fucked up, high, and celebrate not contributing to society.
The fact you point out "pipes" as one of the first things vendors sell.... I'm out lol
Losers rejoice!
Thanks for confirming that I never want to participate in ComFest

I'm a little confused. What does attending an event for a few hours on the weekend have to do with one's "upward motivation" or "contributing to society"?
Yeah woah, that took a 180

Its a way of life. If you are a part of that way of life, you wouldn't recognize it.

Do condescending pricks recognise their own condescension? I'm genuinely curious here.

We definitely recognize our superiority and smug attitudes. But yes. We are aware we are better people than you :)
I can't tell if this is trolling or not...
The little infuriating smiley faces at the end of every comment remind me of the most epic troll in reddit's history, /u/Reddit_has_changed. Seriously, if you have a few minutes, look through that user's post history back to the older ones before his AMA, they're perfectly crafted to enrage people without quite tipping off the fact that he's a troll.
Nope not a troll. We do actually know when we are better than people. It's not a superiority complex when it's true.
:)
Yup, a troll.

So you do recognise that you're a condescending prick, but you actually think that that makes you better than other people?
What about delusional? Do you recognise that one?
Oh I absolutely recognize that I can be a condescending prick to people below me. I don't think I'm better than those people, I know I am.
There are people better than I. That's how the world works.
I disagree. I don't think there are any others better than you. Your charisma is intoxicating. Have you considered starting a cult?
Ah, so the delusion of superiority is where the disconnect with reality occurs. Got it, thanks.

What I find fascinating about people who have never gotten high is how they enjoy the art created by stoners. You would think if you enjoy the Allman brothers or John Lennon that just from a rational perspective you would find the culture that create that art to be interesting or at least curious. But you probably have a MBA, so that's a good explanation.

Comments like this attached to the balance of your comments crack me the fuck up. You belittle someone for not understanding something they've never done/experienced and then go do the same thing to them. #Fey
Are you saying I'm not educated? Even MBA'ers & JD's figure out, at some point, "what the fuck did I get myself into"..... haha
I'm predicting that you don't have an MBA specifically. Odds are though that you don't have an MBA or you wouldn't have used that "pejorative". Beyond that, I have no clue what your education level is. For all I know, you may have a PHd in ethereal statistics or something.
Your young!!! lol You can always tell an older lawyer is high quality when you tell a shitty lawyer joke and they laugh, the young and blind, take offense.
Why this always comes back to being high I don't know.... But.
Knowing the results of Elvis, Mama Cass, Frankie Lymon, Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Kirt Cobain, Prince And the countless others.
I'm not really interested in that at all. What gets lost somehow, is that these artists were creating things without their drugs just as well. The drugs didn't make them creative, they were already creative.
Drugs have a fairly large affect on the creative process. I'm not saying you have to get high or even buy into the stoner world, what I am saying is that you would think there would be some curiosity, even some empathy of what the individual finds attractive about that lifestyle.
Yeah not really at all. I feel sorry for them for not being able to cope with the world without pharmaceutical help... But that's it.
Feeling sorry has nothing to do with it, gaining a understanding about the world around you and hence yourself is a worthwhile process. But this is America and what's important is spending your life, blind to the ideologies that guides ones behavior and just slowly put one foot in front of the other till death.
Well I do feel sorry for them. So it has everything to do with it.
As I trundle forward toward death, I know that I won't die early because of my dependence on drugs. Or my belief that I can't be a functional or successful person without them.
I'm not blind to my ideologies at all. I am fully aware of them.
Steach you're not functional at all look at this thread you've ruined, Jesus
It's fairly difficult to be cognitive to the cultural and ideological forces that mold a person. That's why travelling is so useful, it challenges a person to what they thought was obvious. Entering a subculture is a similar process, whether that be the stoners, or African Americans or whomever.
Hopefully you die early from pissing the wrong person off with your smug fucking attitude.
Yeah it's basically a dirty hippie fest, and that's why I love it. Free music, a giant party, and running into people you haven't seen in years. If free music and socializing doesn't sound fun, or if you haven't been in town long enough to run into long lost friends, maybe you won't enjoy it as much as the rest of us, but that's what I get out of it.
As long as you enjoy it.
I am pretty certain I'd hate it :).

As someone who doesn't do drugs or get drunk in public anymore I feel like I'm too old for the shit and my kid is too young.

I'm going to fall into the reddit trap and assume you're being serious and not trolling, so if you are, jokes on me I guess.
I've lived in Columbus for 30+ years and have gone to Comfest multiple times so I imagine I'm going to come across as stodgy and curmudgeonly with my response:
ComFest has changed quite a bit over the years. In it's infancy it was more festival-esque than anything else. Sort of counter-culture, more hippies less hipsters, and much smaller in scale. I'd say it was maybe 1/4 of the size it is now. And it was just Saturday and 1/2 of Sunday.
Some time in the mid to late 90's it began to grow and expand. More music was introduced for entertainment and the number of vendors exploded.
By the early 2000's (to me) it started going downhill. It became less counter-culture and more 1st semester liberal college douche (to steal from South Park). And the drinking and drugs began to really take off. There was always weed, shrooms, and such, but people were more discreet about it because the hippie parents liked to bring their kids. The ages of the attendees started to skew milennial, and it became the hipster frat party that it is now.
I dislike ComFest because I remember what it used to be and what it is now pales in comparison.
Actual answer: It's a multi-day party with acceptable open container and lax drug enforcement, and occasional faux-hippie accouterments like dreadlocks, exposed boobs, natural oils and such. Lots of music, long beer lines, okay food. Tons and tons of sanctimonious self-righteousness.
I've been once. A few vendors, some music and long lines for beer and toilets. It's fun to watch the drunk people dance and there is some good food. But it isn't enough to make me deal with the crowd.
Sounds like the typical response.
I'm surprised that someone hasn't brought up the fact that Columbus allows women to go topless in public and that ComFest tends to bring that out. That always seems to bring out to trolls in this sub. You're missing that entire angle of the argument why this city needs this event to somehow satisfy their troll needs.
Now, on the other hand, as others have stated, "Dirty Hippy Fest" is pretty much on point.
I haven't been there in over 10 years and don't miss it a bit. The reminder that it's Comfest time just tells me it's a good weekend to get out of the city..
In all fairness, the ones that are topless are never the ones you want to see topless. They may be the queens of the trailer park, but seriously. Who wants that?
That seems to be a universal consensus.
What's your plans for the weekend? Want to ditch these losers and play 18?
The idea behind Comfest is to get the hippies drunk and high enough that they're willing to do the paperwork to register to vote. The "Com" part of Comfest doesn't actually stand for "community."
Complacency?
