A little background: Blue and green are loquacious Sanders supporters. Red is a libertarian/conservative economics grad student. Though I haven't seen any of them since high school, I lurk their FB discussions because of how gloriously one sided they are.

It's like they've never left the US to see how poorly the disadvantaged are treated elsewhere. Even in Europe, the class system is much stronger than here. And God forbid you take them to India or Africa.

Could we be doing better? Absolutely. But please, people. Context!

What was the follow up response? According from historical data, there is a 95% chance Red was called a "Racist bigot".

Four hours later and the only change has been blue directly replying to green: "Progress every day [Green] :)"

It appears the Bernie bros have retreated to their safe spaces.

No no no, you see, the reason why we're so charitable is because we have to be. If we were a good socialist country that took care of it's citizens and just taxed the shit out of evil rich people, we'd not have to give to charity!

/s

(but that's obviously what their response will be. I've given this argument before)

no no - the only reason people donate is to shelter their money.. most charities are fronts.. clearly with the Clinton Foundation being the exception... /s

Do you know how much of that charity money is spent on US citizens here in the country? There are so many dollars that are used overseas, and there are charitable foundations that have other goals.

The sad thing is, there's millions of people who think the same way green guy does. Some delusional old fool like Bernie tells them we're all fucked up, and they just believe it. Same goes for people in other countries. They watch some idiot on a talk show and think they know everything about the US, even though they've never set foot here. The US let in over 1 million people in 2014. Just a normal year. And that doesn't include illegals. That makes the US #1 in the world, by far... taking in immigrants. The next country down was almost 1/4 of that. We send out billions a year to poor nations. We instantly send out billions in military aid anytime there's a disaster somewhere. But according to a lot of people, we're just a bunch of racist assholes, fucking everybody over.

To be fair, there's a difference between charitable giving and a social safety net. It's not exactly accurate to say that a nation's level of charitable giving is singularly responsive to the issue the quote raises.

Of course there is a difference.

It's not exactly accurate to say that a nation's level of charitable giving is singularly responsive to the issue the quote raises.

The issue the quote raises is that a society should be "measured" by how it treats the weakest and poorest among them. It doesn't stipulate how that should be done. I would argue, and I think most here would agree, that volunteer charitable giving is a much better reflection of how society feels about it's poor than government forced redistribution.

Yeah, so that's a policy difference, rather than mere ignorance of the facts.

Sure, it's a policy difference and philosophical difference. But trust me, they're ignorant of the facts as well.
