I beat 200° on my dash this afternoon.

I have that same friggin air freshener. Yours is probably meltier than mine.

Bro, I have the same one as well, in that same position, and I learned today its upside down.

Why does everyone have these thermometer things...

If I lived where surfaces could be just one dozen degrees shy of boiling water, I'd sure as hell have one to either know what not to touch or what surfaces I could cook on.

Better than a finger.

Also handy for the microwave.

[–]i_am_not_important 30ポイント31ポイント  (2子コメント)

Not sure why these are so handy for the microwave. I just put mine in there for a few seconds and now my shit is on fire.

The fuck... free slow cooking!

I'm also in Phoenix. I couldn't touch the fucking steering wheel and I burned my nose putting on my damn sunglasses.

I live in Misery. I just put one of those shiny things in my windshield the night before to help reflect the sun. Otherwise, I end up with a steamy car and a blistering hot steering wheel. Always a pain when I go to sit in my car and my glasses fog up :/

I'm guessing you live in a humid area since your glasses fog up? I need one of those reflectors.

Misery is shorthand for Missouri

Oh, I gotcha. Thought the person was saying that they are miserable where they live. Thank you.

I mean, they kind of were. That's the joke behind the shorthand; Missouri is terrible. So you weren't wrong, persay.

I'm from Missouri and live in Phoenix. The worst of both miseries lol. Today the pressure heat in my attic got so high that it blew out the ceiling to my carport, raining chunks of drywall onto my car. It seems after some googling that the temperature in an attic in phx can get up to 160. Bitch of it was that I had to clean it up in idk what temperature above 120 (my mercury thermometer maxed out around 2pm). Hopefully the attic has enough ventilation now hahahahaha

Missouri loves company!

Humidity is fucking awful. Ran into a tourist from Texas, apparently it's hotter here because of the humidity. She said she'd prefer dry heat any day of the week.

I got mine from Walmart, wasn't very expensive. And it has butterflies!

It was around 120 today in Phoenix. I went to Houston a few weeks ago to visit a friend for freepress summer fest. We were lifting weights in his garage and I couldn't go for more than 10 minutes because I was drenched and felt disgusting. Dry heat sucks & so does humidity. I'm going to get one with butterflies.

Hopefully it helps! it only ever gets to like ... 100 tops, sometimes 104? here. My car is red, though honestly that probably doesn't do much.

Part of me wonders, depending on where your car is parked, if the light reflecting off of it combined with the insane heat will cause some sort of wacky explosion.

My car is a dark gray/metallic. So, it absorbs even more heat. A friend of mine cooked an egg on his dashboard... I don't know why.

Because breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

I've lived in both states, and I definitely prefer Texas heat over humid ass Missouri.

Southern Ontario has very humid summers. The humidity makes the heat feel so oppressive and heavy. I love living here but I really wish we had dry heat. Although... I'm really glad we don't have these kinds of temperatures.

It's like going for a swim as soon as you're outside sometimes. Ugggh

Seriously. Tomorrow our humidex is going to get up to 41 degrees Celsius. It's as if the air is soup.

I guess there's a reason they call Misery

Your car is now pasteurized and can be removed from the oven. Should be at a solid 'well done'.

my thoughts last time in Dubai

It was 117 when I visited Dubai and I didn't think it was as bad as 95 in Houston. The humidity really does make a difference.

That's why Wild Wadi is there. Makes it all worth it.

a few friends of mine are at EDC Vegas and said it was 109 at 9pm (43 celsius). For people from Toronto, that's excessively hot. Combine that temperature with dancing and drugs and 100k people and I'm seriously convinced there will be some deaths this year

Fuck I'd be fine with 111. Rumor is it may break 127 in a few days.

120 maybe, no one is saying 127

Hottest it's going to be for me this week is 81 with a pretty nice breeze (10mph avg.) and a 10% chance of precipitation.

I got 125 in death valley last year I guess it's possible.

Fun fact: Death Valley has the highest recorded temperature ever on Earth. Why the hell do you live in Death Valley?

Is it Death Valley? I thought it was somewhere in Ethiopia. I read that in some world records book.

Do you always get your weather forecasts from rumors?

Note to self open a "Driving potholders" store in Phoenix

If there was an egg on your steering wheel, it would be overcooked.

JESUS FUCKING WHY DO YOU PEOPLE LIVE THERE

ITS A MONUMENT TO MAN'S ARROGANCE!

Phoenix rose from it's own ashes ?

I'm actually pretty sure that's where they got the name. That valley has been settled and subsequently abandoned numerous times throughout history.

Everyone eventually said fuck this and left... except us.

Good question. I think the heat burned our brains out

I live here in Phoenix, and I love it to be honest. The snow birds suck, but the heat is really easy to avoid most days.

Yeah it's not that bad. I went out this morning and got a breakfast burrito and then spent the rest of the day playing video games in my air conditioned house.

Stay in the shade when you can, drink water, and it's fine.

I mean yeah it's hot but not unbearable. Maybe I've just been here too long.

Because 9 out 12 months of the years its comfortable, 6 of those I'd say are perfect. Our summer is everyone else's winter - the time we stay inside. And we have next to no humidity.

I like the summer here.

You can only handle it if you aren't a whiney bitch, so there aren't too many of those here this time of year.

You just stay inside for a couple months until it passes. Similar to other state's winters.

It's not so bad if your car is parked in the shade, which is pretty easy to find. Garages and carports are extremely common.

because it's not always 100+ degrees outside and air conditioning + pools

That's 2.81 radians for the math nerds.

Too bad it wasn't 180°. Then you could bake a rad pi on the dash.

For those who live in countries that haven't been to the moon that's 72 degrees celsius

That's one of the best ways I've heard Celsius vs Fahrenheit.

http://i.imgur.com/2yrhU3Q.png

As a resident of Phoenix, this reference is all that consumes my mind for 5 months of the year.

In all seriousness, what do you do? It was 90 today in Rochester and I could barely hold the wheel. I was quickly going from fingertips to palm.

When the interior of your car reaches over 160 (at least the shit you have to touch) how do you drive?

Leaving the window cracked is actually helpful. It's not going to rain, so having a little air movement throughout the day probably shaves 20 degrees off of the temperature. Also one of those reflective sun shades for the windshield that only the elderly use in the rest of the country (I know, I'm originally from the midwest, only my grandpa used one). That makes a bit of a difference too. These things, combined with curse words, are all I have.

I bring a small white towel with me anywhere I go, and I drape it over the steering wheel anytime the car is parked. It helps keep the steering wheel down to the air temperature.

If your interior is black, just bring oven mitts.

As a Phoenician I'm obligated to up vote this.

[–]the_sharpest_knife 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

For those countries that have never won the superbowl

Or 345.1 degree Kelvin just in case anyone wants that.

I thought. ..Kelvin didn't use degrees. I could be wrong. I have the internet to look it up, but I won't. And I dropped out of my first year of community college seven years ago. I don't know. Someone?

Some of these guys are right, but so are you. You don't say "degrees Kelvin," you just say "Kelvin."

*345.1 Kelvin -- absolute temperature doesn't use degrees weirdly enough. /pedantry

First I've heard of it, thanks for the correction!

621 degrees Rankine for anyone who works in absolute temperatures in freedom units.

You could cook steak in there.

When you're like me and live and live in phoenix with a broke a.c. unit...you are the steak

Cold showers before bed are the greatest thing ever.

It's gotta be COLD. Start warm as you please, and then go lower until you feel your chest tighten. Get the cold water into the joints of the body - Armpit and groin, as that's where most of your heat is. Basically, the colder you get it, the better you'll sleep. You need to be shivering pretty vigorously.

I realize that this may sound like torture, but you've felt heat so oppressive that you can't sleep, which is torture in and of itself. Once you slip into bed, you will drop off to a stone-cold sleep.

But... Your body would heat up to counteract the cold... And once the shower stops...

Absolutely it would, otherwise you'd be dead.

Once the shower stops, your body takes awhile to warm up. But, cold showers make you sleepy late at night.

I encourage you to try it once. I did out of desperation, because no part of the thing makes sense. But once you step out of the shower shiverlng wildly and swearing that you'll never do it again, into a soft, comfortable bed, you fall off to sleep no matter the hellacious temperature. It's pretty awesome.

Yes, cold showers and cold baths are how I survived hot summers without air conditioning. I wonder if it would work in Phoenix though : does the tap water even get cold when it is so hot for so long outside?

No. The cold water here is usually as hot as the hot water. Next suggestions please.

Not in Southern California.

wow...or just move

"just"

lol

As if the entire process of moving is easier than taking a cold shower.

You only have to move once versus showering every night just to be able to sleep. The move would eventually be worth it. If my calculations are correct, I'd say 2.2 years worth of showers is equal to 1 move.

I just usually shower abnormally hot because shower wet is still a lot better than sweaty wet.

I've had coworkers bake cookies in their car.

For real? That's unimaginable

Don't worry, it's a dry heat.

I fucking hate it when people say that about Arizona.

I mean, so is an oven and I wouldn't want to live in one of those.

countries that haven't been to the moon

While hiking near Tucson once I took a piss. It never hit the ground.

Just looked up yalls weather for tonight. A low of 88 degrees?! You guys are some real troopers.

10:30 PM right now and it's 102F out. It will only drop that low outside of the city in the desert.

I literally just reopened that app and was about to post back with it. My god man..

Go out at 4am and it'll be around there. I work overnight and it's actually pretty nice temperature in the middle of the night since the suns not out.

It's not going to get under 100F until after midnight. Lots and lots of cement and asphalt.

I audibled it. Had great voice actors. Kinda ruined the movie.

A bonfire is a dry heat. You don't see me sticking my as in one of those.

I would take 105° in Phoenix over 90° in Oklahoma. Our humidity has been so bad lately it adds almost 10 degrees to the actual temperature. Also standing in the shade does nothing here.

So...90+10=100? Is that what you meant to say is hotter than 105?

Until monsoon season hits in Arizona. Then it's 110 AND humid.

People who don't live here don't realize that we get our strongest rains during the summer, too.

I moved to Phoenix many years ago during a downpour.

It was the first time I had ever experienced genuinely warm rain.

It's a dry flame.

I think seattle was just under 70, today. Fahrenheit.

Today was quite beautiful wasn't it? My kids played in the pool.

Can comfirm, frank and beans stick to leg on drives longer than 1 minute.

"It's a dry heat"

Yeah, say that to my car oven I have to get into multiple times a day in this hellhole.

I live in a small southern AZ town and I'd reckon my car could have been hotter earlier. Sheesh

[–]Knoal 5

I was expecting the 130F range. That's hot for an enclosed car.

Can confirm I live in phx

Man, I really need to get one of those Laser Thermometer guns.

Amazon has one on sale for like $13 too.

I think I found my next impulse buy.

[–]WhatTheF_scottFitz 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

On the plus side you can sous vide a nice steak in there.

Ugh, it would be far too well done

Live in Phoenix, can confirm

How do you even deal with that

You stay inside. Walk briskly to your car if you have to go anywhere. The quality of a parking space is based on the proximity to shade, not your destination. AC and deodorant are mans best friend here.

Crack the windows of the car, have a windshield screen, oven mitts, water bottle, good air conditioning

Foil heatshields, tinted glass, opening windows and sunroof a little bit, parking in shaded or underground areas.

Stay inside. Maintain your car's A/C as vigilantly as you do your home's A/C. Drive around the parking lot until a space opens up close enough to the front door you won't die on the hike in, it's not being lazy, your car has A/C, the outside doesn't.

When you come back from shopping, use your shirt to open the door handle, crank the A/C, crack the windows, wait a minute or two, test the steering wheel, wait another minute. Go home, go directly inside.

Any info on summer crime rate in Phoenix compared to the rest of the country? I'm curious, but too lazy to look into it myself

how the fuck do you "Forget" anything that lives and breathes oxygen in your car? HOW!?

If your steering wheel were chicken, it would be perfectly cooked.

Looking at your picture alone gave me a heatstroke and swamp-ass

I would much rather take my -30c winters here in Canada. I struggle when the weather is +28 degrees, but 70 degrees is... not suitable for human life.

What was the ambient temp?

IIRC Phoenix was supposed to reach ~119°F today

It officially reached 117 in Tucson today. My car outside thermometer read 119.

This is why there's growing demand for vehicle dashcams that are powered by super-capacitors rather than li-ion batteries.

Dennis Miller once did a special in Tempe. "So welcome to Tempe, where a baby's first words are often 'But it's a dry heat.'"

Dude I know! Fuck me right? Not the best time to be living in Arizona. Who's down for a "Reddit drifts down the salt river in fucking hot ass Arizona?" We could make that an annual thing!

I stopped for gas outside of Phoenix once, and by the time I went in, paid/bought some water, it had been about 5 or 6 minutes. It took another few minutes to fill up my tank.

I had never been to this part of the country.

I get back in my car, grab the wheel, and get an actual burn on my hand. I had to wrap a towel around the wheel to be able to drive.
