The more appropriate thing to do would take the guy aside and say something like "Look dude the lady clearly doesn't want to dance with you and watching you make a fool of yourself is ruining my enjoyment of the band, so take a walk."

Or at the very least push him back and get in his face. Don't stealth hit him and walk away.

Sucker punch aside, he was not "just trying to dance." The woman made it very clear several times that she didn't want to dance with him, both verbally and nonverbally. She moved away and he followed her, invading her personal space. You think that's okay? If some dude was doing that to you would he also be "just trying to dance"? Or would you consider that rude and aggressive?

She obviously wasn't interested in dancing with him or the other guy. Should he have been punched? No way, but he was definitely behaving in a creepy way.

I agree it was very cowardly to sucker punch him like that but the guy was trying to dance with a woman who clearly wasn't interested and had to physically push him away, not to mention he spent the entire time staring at her ass

'He was asking for it' isn't justification that he got hit. It's said on the basis that people do think like that, not that it's necessarily the correct way to behave.

You may not deserve something, but you need to take into consideration the people around you. Some people are assholes, but consoling yourself with "that's not how people should behave" is just idealistic thinking.
