Saving and deferring spending is the most altruistic thing one can do with money. It is literally an investment in all other people, in all other companies, and it represents pure optimism for the future.

Saving is more altruistic than charity, since charity can be mistargeted, and has the potential graft or misappropriation. Charity often creates bad effects, such as professional pan-handers, or children being mutilated to make them more sympathetic.

Simply destroying one's money is better, but still not as altruistic: the potential to earn the savings back from you is just as important to society as the original removal of money from the economy. Destruction removes influence from merit, and is less altruistic than saving.

In truth, saving money is the most moral thing a person can do.
