Gov. Gary Johnson: Only Bad Guys Will Have Assault Weapons If You Ban Them

Tuesday on “The Alan Colmes Show,” Alan spent a full hour with Gov. Gary Johnson, the former Governor of New Mexico and the Libertarian Party nominee for president in 2016. Gov. Johnson, who is currently polling at 12% and is being seen as a viable alternative to former Secretary Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, talked about how he and former Massachusetts Governor became the Libertarian ticket, his views on the legalization of drugs, and why there should not be an assault rifle ban despite the shootings in Orlando that left 50 people dead, including the shooter:

GOV. JOHNSON: I’m in the camp if you restrict gun ownership that the bad guys are going to have guns. It’s a simple as that.

COLMES: No one needs an assault weapon. I mean that’s a military weapon, with for a few hundred bucks.

GOV. JOHNSON: If you ban assault weapons tomorrow, the bad guys are going to be the ones with the assault weapons.

COLMES: But that argument is always that well, why make a law because people are going to break the law. then why have any laws at all? There are always going to be people who disobey the law. Why allow a gun that’s not a hunting weapon, it’s not a weapon you’re going to use in your house.

GOV. JOHNSON: We may respectfully disagree on this one. It is a constitutional right.

COLMES: It is a constitutional right but doesn’t say you can have any gun you want.

GOV. JOHNSON: You’ve been to Israel.

COLMES: I’ve not.

GOV. JOHNSON: Everybody’s got an AR-15. Everybody.

COLMES: We’re not Israel.

GOV. JOHNSON: We’re not. But there is a sense of safety in Israel and it’s because everybody is heavily armed.
