Be warned, carrot secs have now doxxed me, emailed my work, called me over 10 times and sent multiple texts (to the point I had to turn off my phone). None of that info was available through Reddit, so the extension had to have accessed other parts of my browser. I plan on posting proof tomorrow after I get on a computer and can scrub all the personal info. I never joined a chat, just installed the extension for a day while we thought we were going to use/allow them. I removed the extension and revoked the perms all in about 24 hours.

Kinda odd that I just had to restore my email accounts due to "strange activity" today since I've never had that issue at any point.

This morning I oddly had an email asking me if I was the one reseting my email as well. I had just commented here about this, and literally minutes later got the email. It came so fast from when I commented here, I didn't think he was that fast/desperate.

We would never do that. You entered your email as is into the site. We did nothing of this sort. It is patently false. I have no idea why you continue to slander me—and that's why I emailed you: to find out what I did wrong.

You should sticky this comment. Also dropping this in slack

Agh god, this completely untrue. I simply sent an email to the one he provided. http://i.imgur.com/4tC9ihP.png

Elfa is many things, but a liar isn't one of them.

That is really scary.

I hope lots of people get to read this.

What the fuck!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm just learning about all this now, but holy fuck, fuck everything about this Carrot thing, and fuck everyone who works on it.

[–]MediocreGimpGimp - Blender 4

I'm really sorry, that sucks.

I'd like to reiterate: This is completely false. I contacted on the contact email address he provided: http://i.imgur.com/4tC9ihP.png

I contacted on the contact email address he provided

Where did he provide his email address?

Here is where it happens on iOS (it also happens on Android and web): http://i.imgur.com/qq9pigw.png

  • Why was this made compulsory?

  • Why is there no option for users to change/delete their e-mail?

  • Was this made clear that this e-mail could be used for communication purposes?

Why was this made compulsory?

Email is totally optional. Password is required. Reddit is down half the time so we wanted some way to be independent in the long term.

Why is there no option for users to change/delete their e-mail?

We've actually had 2 users change it by contacting us at hi@carrot.com. It's a fresh feature. We'll probably need to build changing emails next week.

Was this made clear that this e-mail could be used for communication purposes?

Yep, it's in our Terms: "We may communicate with you by push notifications, email or posting notice via the Service. You agree to receive email from us at the email address you provided to us"

In the screen shot you show, this is NOT made clear. Both look compulsory.

OK - this does not inspire confidence though.

You are providing a legal cover. Initially, you did not require a mail. Later, you asked for one. Once you changed - did you inform the users how this would affect them?

It is made clear in the real version. Sorry that's from older design file.

You are....them

This has always been in the Terms from the beginning. We just hadn't built the feature yet. Also, all email addresses are double-opt-in. A user has to click the confirmation email they receive.

Email is totally optional.

Is it clear in the T&C that the email address can be used for researching users?

I don't know if you have a legitimate VC, or just a friend angel-funding you, but they need to be made aware of this breach of trust.

Good! Please make it more clear.

This has always been in the Terms from the beginning. We just hadn't built the feature yet. Also, all email addresses are double-opt-in. A user has to click the confirmation email they receive.

Regardless of the double opt-in, you still have the e-mail address stored. That is the issue - you may or may not use it for communication. In this case, it just happened that you using it for communication was the issue.

If you didn't want him emailing you at work, why did you use your work email address?

The extension is open source on github. Don't throw blame where it might not be.

It went open only after all this stuff came out. It was only after he was asked about this in multiple places that he told us he is all about transparency and trust. This is after removing multiple threads asking about votes and subscriptions. This is after totallynotalt accounts are all of a sudden becoming active and just so super excited to join this brand new chat on a sub they've never been, all swarming within an hour of the post.

I'm laying out what I know and he is showing nothing but craziness and bullshit.

Oh, I visited the subreddit and saw it went OS two days before this post. I don't use Carrot nor have I been following it, but I'm obviously out of the loop so disregard me haha.

Not to mention, open source 'doesn't seem to have a lot of support' in their subreddit from other users that haven't piped up much in the past few months elsewhere either

edit I have documented my experience with these people here

Its devs are anonymous/hidden, I wouldn't go cheering their commitment to OSS just yet.

All of the aliases in their sidebar have like a couple hundred karma each, aside from two with a couple thousand. These aren't redditors, they're well-funded outsiders trying to substitute money for community trust.

WRT the first link: [deleted]; [removed]; [removed]

They're these comments, they mention their funding in there.

They really burned down any chance of a discussion in their sub. Shit wandered. Fucking everywhere

The email we contacted you under was the one you provided.

I overreacted when I saw that elfa was spreading lies about us. We have raised money and people’s financial well being depend on Carrot, so I did what I thought was best and I tried to approach elfa through the email he provided when he registered with Carrot.

Yes, I googled the email when he didn't respond. But nothing about the extension was involved. He was not open to talking to me through reddit, so I thought he might be receptive if I messaged him. In hindsight, I can see why that wasn’t a great idea, but this information was obtained through what he explicitly provided to us. I’m sorry for overreacting - I did what I thought was best to try to resolve the situation since it felt like misinformation was being spread, and I know reddit loves to lynch someone. I’m happy to answer any questions or concerns. We’re just 5 guys trying to build a chat platform for reddit, and I apologize for the mistakes we’ve made in trying to grow it.

EDIT: Elfa, I'm sorry for freaking you out but I wanted to get this resolved as soon as possible.
