Man leaves sheltered intellectual environment, does actual research, and comes to logical conclusion.

It's sad he ever believed in that garbage to begin with.

“People seem to feel the need to believe in something, and when intellectuals abandon traditional religion, as most have done, they tend to seek substitutes,”

To bad that secularists can't believe in capitalism where work and education provide a good life. And a cultural system that does not believe in imposing it's beliefs on others.

What would he have to say about Scandinavia, I wonder?

I honestly feel the success of an economy is mostly tied to the culture -- are people educated? are they having children out of wedlock? what do they value? etc. You can work whether it's free market capitalist or social democratic, as long as the people have the right values.

Unfortunately that means it will not work in America, since we have so many different cultures that cannot work together.
