Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has told the German club he wants to leave – and Manchester United is his preferred destination.
United are keen on the 27-year-old Armenian, who shares an agent with another United target, Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Arsenal have also expressed interest in Mkhitaryan, who cost Borussia £23.6m when they signed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.
However, the player would prefer Old Trafford and the chance to link up with Jose Mourinho.
Borussia officials have been told Mkhitaryan has no intention of renewing his contract, which still has 12 months to run.
However, after already losing Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich for £30m and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang attracting interest from across Europe, it is not certain whether Dortmund, who provide Mourinho’s first opposition as United boss when they meet in a pre-season match in Shanghai on 22 July, will sell Mkhitaryan or make him see out the end of his contract.
