Honest question...why did people care that much? Over on NeoGAF people are mad as hell that there is no female link. I literally never once thought "you know what I wish I could play as a female link".

I think a Zelda game where you actually play as Zelda would be a lot cooler.

The compromise I could see them doing in the future is playing both the Zelda and Link parts. But this whole controversy is a bit ridiculous. I'm a guy, I always loved Tomb Raider, the idea of playing a male Lara Croft would make me livid. It's just not what the game is about, really.

I agree. I don't know why they would want a female Link. Now, if they want to make a game starring Zelda as the main character, fine. Make Link a character to be saved.

Maybe I should start a petition to make Samus a man. ;)

I think it would be cool from the standpoint that it is totally plausible within the Zelda universe. Considering most every Link from a new game is a completely new reincarnation, it would make sense that Link is sometimes reincarnated as a female.

I don't think gender swapping both Ganon and Zelda would be a good move though. I agree on the Zelda main character as well, that could be cool if executed well.

Every reincarnation we have seen keeps the same gender as the original so I'm not sure why the gender would suddenly change. I agree though that playing as Zelda would be cool. Or even perhaps a new character or Impa.

It's been said it passes through genders, hence Zelda is only ever a female in the hylian line.

So No it doesn't make sense in universe.

Where has that been said?

The Hyrule Historia.

The Goddess Hylia calls a descendant of Link one of the knights of hyrule to protect hyrule in times of great need. They would gain his strength and courage and fight to protect the Hyrulian royal family.

Sure it's not said " only guy " however when you look at it from Medieval or Mythological points of view, Knights were guys. A knight in shining armor protecting their princess who've they have sworn to protect.

Sure Link COULD be female, there's no rule saying they can't, but the tradition in Zelda, and even in the bigger mythology it draws from would make it very much so not the norm.

By making the knight a woman you complicate the narrative. You've changed it slightly and it's expected you'll change it more. In the same way if you changed the Frog prince into a Princess you change the narrative of that story, and are then expected to change it further.

Those are my 2 cents on it, and I don't know if I did a good job explaining it. Oh well.

Idk: a well-done female incarnation of Ganon would be pretty damn interesting.

Over on NeoGAF people are mad as hell that there is no female link.

GAF is an SJW hellhole.

I think it would be a good move, but I'm not angry about it or anything. Link has always been a blank slate character. You can change his or his horse's name to "I am a girl" so why not just make it another choice in order for the player to insert him or herself further into the game?

I don't even think I've seen anyone "angry" so much as disappointed. Lots of schadenfreude though. Some people who didn't want that option really didn't want it.

cool word, now if only i could pronounce it

The word is from german and literally translated means "harm pleasure". Basically being happy about something bad happening to someone else. I'm not sure how it's pronounced in english, but in german you pronounce "eu" like "oi". (Also the "a" is pronounced different in german, but I can't think of an english word with that pronunciation).

Don't forget that "Sch" in german is "sh" in english (like in shell or she). So all in all you have sh-ah-den-fr-oi-d-eh!

I saw a lot of comments like "female link would ruin the series forever!", "SJWs are ruining the world!" so yeah, from my perception the anti-female link crowd is a lot more "angry" than the people who think it would be fun/interesting...

Not anymore, probably, because the voice-over clearly says "Link". I wouldn't be against a male/female option or against just having Link be female for one iteration but I do like that they seem to be making him into more of an actual character and less of a player stand-in.

That's true. I suppose getting rid of naming your character is inevitable when and if a game has voice-acting.

It makes me sad there's no naming Link but I vastly prefer this over something like the voice-acting dialogue strategically avoiding saying your name...

I'll add that choosing your gender would preserve some of that player agency and would just require recording separate dialogue for pronouns. But that's neither here nor there.

Is Link even a male name though?

I think it'd work just fine for a female character.

Because they lack any sense of perspective on what deserves being upset about.

Because NeoGAF is an SJW shithole.

Not sure why you're being downvoted...I think they'd be the first to admit they're a haven for SJWs

Then why do they bitch about Link not being female? S/he's clearly a pre-op, pre-hormone-treatment male-to-female transsexual. Duh! Use your imagination, ShitlordGAF!

https://www.reddit.com/r/GirlGamers/comments/4o2s8t/aonuma_explains_why_there_will_not_be_an_option/

They're also mad too it seems.

By the way, has there ever been romance between Zelda and Link? If Link is female...

Other than Skyward Sword, the non-canon Hyrule Warriors, and maybe Spirit Tracks there really isn't much between Zelda and Link. In most games they barely even talk to one another.

In the Oracles, he gets a kiss from Zelda and gets little hearts above his head.

And, though I certainly wouldn't classify it as a romance, there's definitely a strong bond between Link and Tetra in Wind Waker.

I always thought of them as good buddies in WW. Medli seemed like a more plausible love interest in that one, and there's still not much to go on there.

Zelda games just aren't built on a lot of romance, usually.

To be fair, that sub is full of mostly dudes.

Good.

I went into that subreddit a few times, and I swear the people I spoke to on there were like every negative stereotype about female gamers rolled into one.

Make Link and Zelda gay. It's a fantasy world, they can do what they want.

people want a female link because he isnt a character, he is an avatar and it is less immersive to play a male avatar for female players.

If link had personality and emotions like say Mario or Samus, no one would want to change Link.

No, Link is a character. A male character.

XD Not really. I would agree if he had personality and showed emotion but he doesn't.

And thanks to the historia and the connected time line which everyone loves so very much devalues link even further. You don't play as Link, you play as a link. Just another blank slate hero for the player to project themselves onto to go temporarily solve the same problem as the last link and the 1 before that. : )

Eh, he's a character with many different incarnations - although the courage of spirit comes to reside in each Link, each Link is an individual person himself. I'd be open to the spirit of Courage being genderless itself, and the vessel that holds it possibly being either gender in future titles.

Nah, I'm a girl and it's never been less immersive in all the years I've played Zelda (can't say if that's the same for other girls though.) I actually would like it more if there was a game with Zelda as the main character. Instead of making Link female, it would be cool to see Zelda as he hero who has to use wisdom to save Hyrule.

I think it'd cool. I don't think the game is lacking for not having a female alternative, but I'd certainly play the hell out of a female Link if that was an option.

Because why not? Like, I love Zelda, it's probably one of my favorite series, but it's not like 'Link' has a super strong character behind him. Plus considering stuff like WW showing the literal point was 'Link' wasn't one dude but rather the concept of the hero that rises against darkness, why not have one of those be a lady?

I don't think many are that 'mad' about it, more annoyed, especially considering last I checked the reasoning for it has been pretty spotty. Like in that 4 player co-op that wasn't 4 Swords it was 'well you can put on a dress' which makes it like 'so then what's the fuckin harm in making one a lady?' and then in this one it was something about the 'story' requiring it when they made a big point of saying how little backstory there was to start with and all.

It's less 'fuck you Nintendo you suck' and more 'why do game companies CONSTANTLY act like 'maybe one can be a chick' is some kinda crazy request'. It's not just Zelda it's Zelda on top of shit like 'no female Assassins because programming a female model is hard' and all.

You act like a female Link is some obvious thing that Nintendo is actively keeping from you.

Getting annoyed that there isn't a genderbent version of a male character is super weird to me. Why would, or should, you expect that? It's not like Zelda is lacking in cool female characters, and so many games today have female protagonists or offer a choice. So what if the protagonist is a guy? Does it really matter so much?

I don't think I've ever cared what gender a character is in a video game at all, let alone as much as people seem to about Link.

Because why not?

No upper body strength.

Zelda games aren't exactly focused on realistic anatomy. You can lift massive boulders just with magic gloves, I don't think muscle mass is a concern.

So you need to start the game with the Power Glove if you play as female link.

Link IS known for his sick guns

If they did go with the idea, it should be non-canon.

Can you link me the comments? I know Nintendo joked about female link but not really confirmed anything.

I sometimes wonder if they introduced Linkle to see if she was popular enough for her own game title.

Theres been like a dozen Legend of Zeldas, you would think eventually we would have a female Zelda by now. /s
