I would actually vastly prefer a game starring Zelda as a main character than one female Link -- if only because it feels more natural to me for the series.

Zelda rescuing Link and reuniting the trifoce pieces would actually be kind of an awesome departure from the norm.

I think we can all agree that she deserves better than fucking Wand of Gamelon.

Best part of that entire awful series:

"I'M DYING YOU KILLED MEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

"Good!"

Ocarina, Wind Waker, and Spirit Tracks all had her take a more active role in the action - and I honestly feel they're some of, if not the, best incarnations of her in the series. I really do think based off them that Nintendo could do a great LoZ game with her as the lead, with Link taking up a heavy secondary support role like she normally does.

It's a shame Aonuma and co. apparently feel it'd not fit the series that literally is named after her to have Zelda take the leading role for once :/

I think part of the problem is that Zelda, as the princess, has a sort of intrinsic place in the world of the narrative. She's the political and spiritual leader of Hyrule, the descendant of the warrior goddess Hylia.

But Link's only function is as a tool, a sort of... agent of the gods to show up when things get bad and fix them. So I can sort of see why you could argue Link would have nothing to do if Zelda were the player character: Link's narrative function is literally 'Hero'. If the character whose sole function is 'Hero' isn't actually the hero of the narrative, then he's superfluous.

I just don't think it matters as much as Aonuma seems to think it does.

I always thought they should do one where you play both at once. I played the Prince of Persia where you played the dude and the lady at the same time. Where she was magic and could help you double jump and saved the hero dude if you jumped him into a pit like an idiot. That game was cool. Make that game.

Ok, secretly I just like it when heroes fight back to back. Link/Zelda fighting hordes of monsters back to back speaks to me. I’m a simple creature.

"We thought about it," said Aonuma, "and decided that if we're going to have a female protagonist it's simpler to have Princess Zelda as the main character."

This idea was ultimately rejected, because according to Aonuma "...if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup."

So if Zelda--this Zelda--needs rescuing, that's a great story. If Link needs rescuing, that's just impossible. Because Link has a part of the triforce. And Zelda I guess doesn't.

Triforce of Wisdom just means you get a pain in your wisdom tooth when evil's nearby.

It's really cool when the tooth glows blue, though.

Man, I'd love a stealth zelda game where you play as shiek. Even as just a shorter budget title.

[–]koronicusSocial Justice Platypus 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

If a Zelda-based Dynasty Warriors knockoff is possible, I don't see why this should be so difficult to imagine.

[–]GreyWardenThorgaSocialJusticeZordon 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

If Nintendo released something like New Super Luigi or Captain Toad that was a Shiek stealth game, I'd have to shut them up and make them take my money. And I don't even particularly like stealth games.

The frustrating part of that answer is the skeleton of the plot is stupid simple.

Ganon attacks the game's n00b village first. Plot excuse reason Link is taken captive defending his home (either Ganon just captures a chunk of the village or he realizes Link has the Triforce of Courage or something).

Princess Zelda is a princess who actually does stuff, and goes to investigate news of the attack (or disaster if they don't know it is specifically an attack). While there you find the first dungeon, the Great Deku Tree, or whatever.

If they don't want Link to seem too weak, the half-way mark of the game could be Zelda rescuing the captives to find Link had already escaped with some of them, and essentially becomes a Sheik like character without the whole disguise thing.

if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?

Link could do LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE IN THE STORY. Mentoring, mini-games, exposition, be the McGuffin, need rescuing, be the transportation, raise chickens, run a shop, be a sidekick, sleep the whole game, tag team with Zelda, be comic relief, hell maybe he could get possessed or brainwashed and be the villain.

This whole "but what would we do with Link?" Is lazy and just an excuse to not have a female hero.

  1. Why not have a female Link?
  2. Instead of making Link female, why not make Zelda the hero?
  3. Zelda can't be the hero because Link has to be the hero
  4. See question 1

This is like the most Nintendo explanation in a long history of Nintendo explanations that Nintendo has given for this kind of stuff.

At the very least with people being vocal about it we may have a middle ground in a Zelda game eventually where both characters work together. Even Mario has done this with Peach being a playable character. Or Nintendo might put its head in the dirt and not listen to fans like usual, but at the moment I think it would be best to only be hopeful for a co-op with Zelda.

Given what we've seen of Breath of the Wild, I'm guessing the reason that there's no option to play as girl Link is that it would significantly increase the work load on a game that's launching across two platforms and has already been delayed by over two years for that reason.

I'm disappointed but not really surprised. Nintendo seemed completely caught off guard by the demand for a lady-led Zelda title two years ago, and this game was already well into development by then.

Honestly as much as this game is doing changing the formula, the disappointment is pretty minor. It looks incredible and we've only seen a fraction of it so far. Plus now that Nintendo has figured out this whole 'DLC' thing, I wouldn't be too surprised to see a Zelda-led second quest as DLC.

[–]AerokiiSocial Justice Paladin 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I am so very excited for the game, but holy shit is that awful reasoning. It's like Triforce Heroes all over again.

[–]pyromancer93 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Man Nintendo, why you gotta goof like this?

Swear to god, it's like they have to counterbalance everything good for me (New Zelda! Looks great! Incorporating mechanics I love!) with something bad (Link dude because reasons).

It's just disappointing to see them get tied up in something so...easy to correct.

[–]amekir 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Nintendo, once again, demonstrating that they are conservative as fuck.

[–]KeepingMostly2Myself 1ポイント2ポイント  (5子コメント)

How do you feel about Aonuma's reasoning?

I think he's being a jackass.

Are you disappointed that you won't be able to play as a female hero in Breath of the Wild?

Yes and no. I stopped feeling comfortable with Nintendo after that time they sided with literal Nazis, but I've been thinking I could come back to their work if they stepped up in other ways. Instead, they've continued their long tradition of making dumbass excuses.

"Can we be black in Omega Ruby, too?"

No, because, uh, it's not Kalos. Kalos was themed around fashion. You know, blazers, scarves, being black. You understand.

"Can we be Zelda?"

No, because C O G N I T I V E D I A R R H E A

Is this about Alison Rapp's firing or was there also a more direct incident that somehow escaped me?

It is. See my reply to the other person who asked.

What? Care to elaborate?

[–]KeepingMostly2Myself 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

The Rapp smear campaign. One of the people most involved in it was Andrew Aurenheimer, an infamous Nazi with a swastika tattooed on his chest (an article with a photo of it is one of the very first search results for his name or aliases). He's the one who spread around contact details for Nintendo corporate.

I seriously doubt the company was unaware. There's no way they wouldn't have checked into it, and the timing of their responses suggests that they knew damn well what they were doing and wanted it buried.

Whether or not you fault them for siding with Nazis, they certainly knew they were siding with abusers. I'm just done making excuses for their bad behavior, in the way that fans do. They make enough of those themselves.

What could Link do?

And before anyone asks, yes, I am intentionally drawing attention to myself. Gotta make sure everything's together what with OCD and all, so might as well link to the post directly instead of just an image.
