793 gamers listening to old school tunes for 5 years!
Sometimes game music is so good that it's worth listening to on its own. Sometimes old game tunes are so memorable that they can get stuck in your head to this very day.
I'll never forget being a kid and discovering it was a horrible night to have a curse. Love or hate the game, that's one of the most rockin' game tunes ever. Also, who could forget the first time they heard Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal in Moonwalker?
/r/retrogamemusic is mostly for retro game compositions, but it also allows some chips tunes too, like this Sega Genesis version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and this pretty cool piano cover of Super Mario 64's snow theme.
- Did you know? With this sub, or with any music subreddit, you can use Reddit Playlister to listen to it as an online radio station?
Now it's time for that part of the feature where we interview the mods. Here I spoke with the subreddit's founder, /u/em22new.
Do you have a favorite system for retro game music?
What do you think of covers/chip tunes?
I really like chip tunes as they've been with me for a long time and I feel familiar with them. I can't really say that I enjoy a lot of covers, I think some of the magic that goes into a tune is the creators choice of instrument or sample. When you start to change those attributes the song becomes something else.
What are your favorite retro game tracks?
Such a difficult question but I'll try. Auf Wiedersehen Monty, Commando and Robocop title music on the C64, Turrican II title music on the Amiga, Duckburg from Quackshot Streets of Rage title on the Megadrive. Agent X and Magicland Dizzy in game Zx Spectrum.
What is your first memory of a video game?
Long time ago, let me see if my brain can remember. Hmmmm. I think it was Percy The Potty Pigeon by Gremlin Graphics on a 48k spectrum. From that moment I was hooked on computers. I think that was around 1984. The first console was an NES a few years later, of course Super Mario Bro.
Do you have any favorite bands/musicians?
Yes, I've been heavily involved in music in the past as it was a career path I chose to take before gating back into computer engineering. I wrote music in the 90s on the Amiga that is floating around on the net, when a new a online module player was released a few weeks ago I'd found someone had uploaded some of my music which was nice. Bands like The Beatles, Queen, Aerosmith, Boston and artists like David Bowie have always been go to music for me. I do have a modern appreciation too, collecting a lot of house music from the 90s, I also love original early "jungle" which would be called drum and bass these days. I have an oldskoolrave subreddit that has been around for some time where we share tracks like that.
How about a question for you, readers; what are your favorite old school game tunes?
