Sounds like somebody needs...an audio medic.

Ironically, spamming "That's how you get tinnitus!" could possibly lead to tinnitus.

This may be the best Archer episode that doesn't involve breast cancer.

Hyperbole be damned, I think those couple breast cancer episodes are the best back-to-back episodes in any show, ever.

Absolutely my favorite multi episode series in any show. I cry laughing every time watching the interrogation scene with the Irish guys.

The Zeppelin's used in world war 1 did not use helium. Helium was only just discovered around that time and the US had a monopoly on it and was pumping it from Texas. Most airships as they were called used hydrogen. It had 10% more lifting power than helium and was cheap to get. The downside of this was it was flammable whereas helium is inert. The Germans didn't have trouble with them getting shot down early in the war because they could fly higher than planes at the time. Later though advances in airplane technology made them easy to shoot down also a bunch were lost over London

Thanks for the info! Don't know if you didn't get it, but the person you're replying to is referring to a quote from Archer.

/r/ShowerThoughts: Using my headphones makes tinnitus go away, but it also makes it worse.

On a serious note, is head phones recommended if you have tinnitus? I've been avoiding it since I noticed mine last year

With absolutely no scientific evidence behind my statement, I believe as long as the volume level is low you're fine. I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn: Express last night.

Do those make the night go by quicker?

It really depends of the Holiday inn location.

[–]______DEADPOOL______ 7ポイント8ポイント  (2子コメント)

Holiday Inn: Express last night.

Ha! Luxury. In my days we only had a motel 6.

You will notice it more with headphones, but that's because it mutes the rest of the sound in the room so you are listening out for sound. Tinnitus generally doesn't stop, you just ignore it. Kind of like breathing. You are always doing it, just not paying attention.
Having said that, tinnitus can always get worse. The likely hood of damage is a mixture of how loud it is vs time exposure to said sound. Handy visual here

Tinnitus isn't actually damage to the eardrum. It's actually caused in the brain. I myself have it due to being young and dumb listening to loud music coming from my headphones, concerts, loud machinery/cars/bikes, etc. My father also has it due to not wearing hearing protection while working construction for 13 years but his is worse and affects both ears. He always cracks a joke about it saying "hire the hearing impaired, they're fun to yell at."

Give me a bit to locate the source about tinnitus not affecting the eardrum.

edit for source: https://www.ata.org/news/news/two-types-tinnitus-brain

Edit 2: not trying to spread misleading information. Was giving my understanding of it as it was explained by a close friend who studied it while in college.

Please don't spread such misleading information... Tinnitus can be caused by plenty of reasons and the main causes are permanent damage to the nerves in the cochlea or the cranial nerve. Inflicted by sound or disease or whatever it is in a specific case. Too many variables and too hard to study since it involves the brain producing phantom sounds. No clue, no cure, no prospects. Live with it, they say.

Have had tinnitus to some extent for 20 years. My headphones prob make it worse but they're the only thing that keeps me moderately sane and drowns out the ringing. Catch 22 :/

Just use it on a low volume and for a limited time.

The best thing is still speakers, so try to use your headphones at least as possible.

IIRC, headphone usage can lead to earwax build, and enough earwax can result in tinnitus.

The following is my understanding of it, but bear in mind it's been a while since I researched it so things might've changed. Also I'm not an expert, so take my words with a grain of salt:

Over-the-ear headphones are perfectly safe because it provides an air cushion between your ear and the source of the sound. As long as you don't have the volume on ear-blasting levels, you should be a-okay.

On-the-ear headphones are less safe, but are still mostly okay, especially if they are used sparingly, say, while listening to music at the gym.

Earbuds/in-ear speakers are pretty much the worst for your ears. They can be okay as long as you're listening at low volume for short periods of time, but they have the highest chance of causing you ear trouble later, because there is literally no real air space between the speaker and your ear. Think of it like putting your ear flush against a speaker, blaring music, and expecting to be fine. It's just not gonna happen long-term.

Barrel of salt; brought. Have to say, that sounds pretty pseudo-science-like.

Yeah when it's silent on headphones holy shit it's bad

Everyone has it actually, it is just a bit different from tinnitus caused by ear damage. When it gets quiet enough you'll hear a ringing from the sound of blood rushing through the ear.

I have no tinnitus from damage, but hear this in an extremely quiet environment. If I focus on it, it gets loud enough to be deafening.

True complete silence is a total lie.

Have you heard about the room that's so quiet, it can cause hallucinations? Apparently you can hear your heartbeat in there.

I have. It sounds interesting. Hearing the sound of your own heartbeat would probably help drown out any ringing from blood rushing in your ears.

For anyone with tinnitus, I don't know if you've seen this possible cure with 29 gildings yet but you should definitely check it out.

It's not a cure, just relief. Can be helpful though.

With repetition, it can eventually decrease your tinnitus dramatically.

I've tried this and unfortunately did not experience any change. Not sure if I was not doing it effectively or if I am just experiencing a lower-level of tinnitus but for me, at least, no improvement.

The amount of popularity that comment got baffled me. I remember seeing it as a response and trying it out, didn't work for me but I thought it was a good tip anyways. Next day I looked at it, had over a dozen golds. Crazy! I think its one of the most popular comment threads I've seen on Reddit.

[–]Quof 10

It didn't work for you, but it worked for a lot of people, and those are the people who upvoted and gilded it. Nothing baffling, really.

I'm not upset about it, it baffled me because I've never seen a comment get that much attention before, even other comments that are linked to bestof don't get that much.

I think its baffling in a cool way and I'm glad it helped so many people.

For me this method works but only for about 30 minutes.

It's the trailer for season 5 iirc, that's why you don't remember seeing it in the show.

Only the sweet release of death and stop it now. But hey, I've had it so long I only notice it when it gets worse or I'm reminded... about.... fuck.

Two years ago I started getting it so bad that I needed Xanax to get me off from thinking about it, I felt like I was literally going insane. Since I've surrounded myself with white noise, I can pretty much ignore it even when I don't have white noise.

It's weird though, the more you think about it the louder and louder it gets. I can't imagine what total silence is like, must be nice. Hope there's a cure some day.

What do you mean by surrounding yourself with white noise? Would you recommend it?

I once enquired of my ENT about these white noise devices I otherwise know nothing about, he dismissively answered that "only old people wear them" and that it would amount to nothing more than listening to music on my MP3 player before going to sleep anyway.

And that was it. But since it seems to have brought you some relief, I have to ask now.

When I sleep or I'm just hanging out in my house in general, I almost always have a fan going at medium to high speed. It almost completely takes my mind off the ringing and instead shifts the constant sound I hear to the fan which isn't nearly as annoying to me, actually its quite soothing. It's also trained my brain to tune the ringing out in situations where I don't have the white noise (though it took a year or two) and I can sleep in silence if I have to.

Might not work for everyone, but it brought me a lot of relief and before I started using the fan I genuinely thought I'd never be the same. I'd absolutely try it out.

White noise is basically background noise.

For example the sound of rain, forest sounds or a fan being on in the background, or yeah music.

Most of those things help

Check a couple different videos out on YouTube, just search rain sounds or forest sounds etc until you find one that helps you out

You know those old TVs that had the glass screen and that high pitch whistle? That's basically what it sounds like. It's like someone is following you around with a TV from the 90's. You can tune it out but if you think about it you can hear it.

Same. It's horrible. I think it I am cursed with it because I had a lot of ear infections as a small child, and when I first got an iPod i listened to music at ~50-60% volume with earbuds. Also it became much worse when I got my wisdom teeth removed got and braces.

Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus. Dr. Jan Strydom, of A2Z of Health, Beauty and Fintess.org.

This always works for me.

Trust me on this. Works for varying amounts of time depending on the person, but knowing what silence is again for even seconds at a time feels like pure bliss.

I don't know if you're trolling me or not to get me to thump my own head, but I tried it, didn't work :/

Having a gun fired close to your ear damages it, giving you eventual tinnitus, which is a constant ringing sound. Flexing your jaw and making a 'mawp' sound gives relief, and it's a recurring joke in Archer.

There's a TV show called Archer. It's on Netflix. Highly recommend watching it.
