Clarkston restaurant Something shuts down after less than a year. (self.glasgow)
Veloglasgow
Just read that the restaurant that opened in Clarkston in a blaze of publicity after the owners "brutally honest" job advert (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/brutally-honest-job-advert-went-5731125) has shut up shop after 9 months.
Reading some reviews it looks like the guys arrogance extended to not taking any feedback from customers at all well...

I'm sure they'll be here any minute saying we're shilling for Taco Mazama.
just fyi - taco mazama are a real shower. A friend of mine worked for them and was docked wages for being late. He was told to either accept this or be sacked.
When a member of staff works there for 23 months they are told to sign to sign a new contract. This is to prevent them from being considered properly employed and allows Taco Mazama to sack them at any time for no reason, including things like 'not weighing out portions properly'. Properly, properly dodgy company.
Yeah, I have some friends who worked there (and know a couple that have been there for years). One's since left due to some of the same shit you've mentioned, but is trying to get all her old coworkers unionised. I hope she succeeds, as a lefty who sadly loves their burritos.

Really wish they would get back to how they were at the start. With Barburrito taking over Pinto it's going to get worse and worse. There is scope for top grade mexican takeaway in the city centre, topolabamba is ok for sitting in and bibis is excellent but for takeway the options are dire.
Bibi's is the shiiiit but yeah it's a bit of the way and usually booked up on weekends so it's not really somewhere you'd drop by casually.

I agree. I would also sell my liver for a pukka Korean restaurant that is willing to sell genuine Korean food, e.g. makchang, ddakbal, normal strength gochujang etc with normal Korean portion sizes. However, the people of Glasgow may not have the balls for the foods I just described, so I'm not sure of the commercial viability.
Well that would be useless because signing a new contract does not negate the rights acquired after 24 months of employment.

Didn't Something shut down a few months ago now? I always really enjoyed the food there and wasn't put off by the guy's attitude. It was usually total spanners he was replying to online. But it would have probably done better in the West End than in Clarkston.
I quite liked the place- the food was excellent, if a bit pricey, but I thought that might be a reflection of both the quality of the ingredients and the fact it was on Clarkston high street where presumably the rent was extortionate and the footfall was poor.

I work in the city centre, and often have lunch out, and your kind of food sounds like exactly the kind of stuff I would like to eat and is mostly lacking around the middle of the town - interesting variety, a tendency towards vegetables without actually being haughtily vegan, complete plates of food that cover all the nutritional groups, so I can eat something more exciting than a Tesco meal deal once or twice a week but isn't just a mass of lard and cheese. It could be great, and it fits a gap in the market.
But I'll advise you one thing - your internet presence is a fucking bombsite. I considered going out of my way to visit Somewhere, but for every bit of information on the internet about your food, there's three of four about your own personal life and issues, your travails with staff, your inability to serve customers at busy times. That does not attract me as a customer.
You really need to separate your personal life from your business, as far as social media is concerned. If/when I'm your customer coming in for lunch, for all you know, I'm also in the middle of a 14-hour day that's going to shite, with all manner of issues on my mind. I don't for a second even want to consider that the place where I might take refuge in the middle of my working day is going to add to that stress. All I want to know is that I'm going to get a plate of good food and a quiet corner to eat it in. I genuinely couldn't give a shit if the person who made it is having a good day or not - obviously I hope they are, but as I don't know them personally or socially, it's just not on my radar. Maybe if I became a regular I might eventually care.
I know you have some connection to Spitfire, and they are a perfect exemplar of the issue - awesome coffee, great food, perfect location, not unreasonably priced, and I would be in there twice a week, but you know what? I haven't been there for months because every time I go in, aside from the chaos and the seemingly inability to cope with more than 3 tables of people, I get the owner's fucking life story and all the problems he's having with keeping it going, and I simply cannot be arsed with that. All I want is a coffee, presented to me by someone who understands that when I ask, "how's it going?", it's not a genuine question. They've scared off half their clientele.
A successful 'mom n pop' business is about projecting the image of a happy family, even if you're completely dysfunctional in reality. Hide that shit from us.
That makes sense. And if you were to come in, that's likely what you'd get. The Internet version of the place and the brick and mortar version are wildly different. That's what FOH are for. To be all smiles and chat while the sweat and heart attacks are happening in the back.
Also, don't judge the place by this post. OP photoshopped together about six bad reviews out of 600 to make me look like a dick. Go to our actual FB/tripadvisor/etc. It's 90% positive and I genuinely like our customers.
Still, I get what you're saying. Stop in when we're open and see for yourself. I'll make sure it's not a shambles when you arrive.

We're reopening in the city centre in about eight weeks. My wife and I got hit with a HUGE building refurbishment fee from the GHA and I had to go do some "real" work for a couple months so we didn't lose our flat. Luckily a ton of people didn't share you guys' sterling opinions of the food, so we were offered a new spot and investment money to open back up somewhere less expensive with better footfall. Like a reward for our hard work. Glad you're sitting here trying to gloat on Reddit about the failure of a Glaswegian mom-and-pop though. That's classy shite.
Now fuck off back to whatever it is you do.

I'm American. We all sound like dickheads as far as I can tell. On top of that I just have a particular hatred of people talking shite on the internet, so I respond accordingly. I worked every single day, 14 hours a day, for nine months, for no money, to make good food and try to build something for my wife's future. This fuckwit didn't like my job advert and is now trying to do a dance in the grave of my business, ONLINE.
Why wouldn't I be a dick about that? Fuck him.

[–]BadykTotal prick 27
You only sound like a dickhead when you're acting like one, nationality has nothing to do with it.
Why wouldn't you be a dick? Because you're trying to run a business? For future potential customers who haven't visited your place(I'm one of them), your online persona is the only experience they have. Taking this thread into account and the bad review responses I don't care how good the food is, I'm not going to spend my hard-earned cash supporting someone acts like a total prick any time someone has something negative to say, justified or not.
I appreciate that you've been working hard and that's admirable but you're hardly the only one. You need to learn to turn negative feedback into a positive outcome. Instead of flying off the handle, why not try and turn the situation around. Invite those customers who leave bad reviews to comeback, resample the food and don't charge them if they still don't like it. Have a reddit 10% off day one time to try and repair the damage you've already done here.
Basically, grow up a bit and chill the fuck out.
If you'd followed them on facebook, you would see that he's actually pretty cool. Basically, when he's not being unduly slagged off, his patter is quite good.

[–]BadykTotal prick 7
I hate to tell you big man but the people on here aren't the wee voices getting the better of you.
I didn't even click the guy's links before responding, but if you go to our Facebook we have 99 reviews. 89 are 5 stars. 4 are 4 stars. 5 are 1 star, and four of those are personal attacks from people with neighbouring businesses. People LOVED our place, and will again. If this thread has turned you off to it, that's shite. But this thread was made with an agenda. The restaurant wasn't.
I responded to hundreds of reviews across multiple platforms. The overwhelming majority of them were nothing but positive. Seeing the six bad ones in a cluster is a bit disingenuous on OP's part, and must have taken him some time in Photoshop. Look for yourself and see how actual people in the real world felt about us.
I mean you'd think after getting pelters for being a cunt to customers and then whining like some babyback bitch you'd maybe get the picture that nobody likes a wanker. Learn to actually take criticism on board like an adult rather than replying to people like a petulant child. Just because you work hard doesn't mean your rolls aren't shite.
Did you actually go to our Facebook, etc or just take OP's cobbled-together post as fact? Look at the reviews from actual people. Cherry picking the six bad reviews out of hundreds doesn't mean shit to me. People really enjoyed our restaurant, and we really enjoyed our regulars. This whole thread is a joke. Someone actually don't time on photoshop trying to make us look bad and you gobbled it up hook line and sinker.
Do you not see the irony in shouting at me? It could be ONE bad review, ever! You were still a cunt to people who had anything bad to say about your resteraunt. Publicly and available for all to see. If you're not smart enough to understand that posting attacks against people who don't agree with you online can negatively impact your business then you should pack it up now.
I'll give you a sample response for reference since I'm feeling generous. 'the breakfast roll as cold and greasy - expensive for what it was, 1 star' 'Hey there disappointed customer, were sorry to see that your sandwich was not up to our usual standards. If you message us directly we'll be happy to sort out a little compensation with you as an apology. We hope to see you back soon so we can show you just how a breakfast roll should be done'
Simple mate, doesn't matter if the customer is talking utter shite, it's how you appear that counts online. So wind your neck in and grow up a bit, stop being such a walloper.
I disagree. That's what many places do, and it's become so expected that they end up emboldening liars and scammers to leave negative reviews just to get free food. If the restaurant has strict food standards and would never serve cold or greasy food, then that person is lying and you can call them out on it. And since I worked every single day we were open, from open to close, I can see and maintain the food standards 100% Anyone IN the restaurant with a complaint is absolutely given all the attention and recompense we can offer. If the food is wrong I will come out of the kitchen myself to apologise and then go fix it. I do not give the same courtesy to keyboard warriors, who smile to the staff's face then go home and talk shit about them. And some of them are just plain liars hired by (or friends with) our competitors. Should I offer them free food for actively lying to hurt us?
You seem to think so, but I don't. After all, what's to stop the OP from going online and saying "the restaurant is shite. bad food. 1 star" on Facebook without ever having eaten there, just because he doesn't like me? Would his review be valid? Should I offer him a free rosti? I get what you're saying about perception but all I care about is what the ACTUAL people through the door think. We had 2700 likes on Facebook. That's not 2700 regulars eating in our restaurant every day though. I don't chase online approval. I try to give everyone through the door the best food for the best value in a place that's nice to eat. If we do that and do it well then we can have terrible reviews every day but the restaurant will still be full of happy people and staff, and we'd be fine.
I do get what you're saying, but we have differing views on the subject.
See instead of explaining why you're right and every single person that criticises you is wrong...have a think about why people say negative things and make changes. It might stop another failure.
I'm not suggesting you actually mean a single word of any shit you feed them. Just take into account that it doesn't matter quite how good your food is if word gets out that you're a wank
