I found oil 15 feet under my land.. what should I do? (self.legaladvice)

I was trying to dig out this ugly metal pole out of my yard, and realized it went really, really deep after not too long. My curiosity got the best of me and over the course of several years, with the help of a pick axe and a shovel, I dug a slant and I managed to get to the bottom of the pole so I could pull it out. Then I discovered porous rock, i've dug a little to the side and there is still some there.

My question is now, what do I do? Is it worth anything? Do I even own land this deep?

Edit: definitely a septic tank.

      Honostly if you would only have to dig 15 feet to hit oil in a place then it is highly unlikely that it is a real oil well, if it would be then the oil companies would have found it by now.

      In 1946 the average depth of digging before hitting oil was 3.635 feet. By 2008 it was 5.964 feet.

      So how likely would it be that you really hit a new oil well (I would say unlikely)

      The available information was in feet, but since I'm from mainland Europe I'm used to write numbers down in another way. For me to grasp how deep something is I also convert it to meters because I'm used to the more scientific metric system.

      I think k the point was that you used a decimal, not a comma to demark the numbers. 3.635 feet and 5.964 feet isn't very deep. 3,635 and 5,964 is quite deep.

      Let me use dollars for this example (it is less confusing that way).

      A pack of chewing gum would cost for example 1,49

      A car would cost for example 1.499,-

      So the comma will come before a partial and a dot will come before the next three figures in a sequence (an expensive house could cost something like 10.000.000,- which is 10 million).

      Since I'm currently reading a lot of text from the US and Europe I have to deal with both ways and mostly work based on context.

      I've seen oil at less than 4' deep, in Kentucky.

      Worked as an environmental contractor, a company called us that was horizontally boring a water line underneath an interstate. They dug a pit for their boring machine to be able to drill level under the highway. After a night of heavy rain they came down to find that there pit was full of water, nbd, but had a heavy sheen of oil on top.

      The EPA thought it was a spill from somewhere else, but turns out it was naturally occurring crude oil seeping out from the rocks and soil about 4' down. This is definitely not the norm, but it is not unheard of.

      First thing: check the contract from when you purchased the home. My quick look at Kentucky law (I am not licensed in KY) indicates that a home can be sold without the oil and mineral rights (381.430), so there is no easy answer for whether or not you own anything beneath the surface.

      ? Do you have mineral rights to your land. Large portions west of the Mississippi River the mineral rights are separated from real estate.

      You might want to check at the Registry of Deeds in your county to see if anyone has reserved or sold mineral rights to the property. There are some parts of the country where one seldom sees this but I suspect it may be more common down by you.

      Do you know anything about the pole? It would be cool if you found out that it was left from a turn-of-the-century (1900ish) exploration.

      You could look into your town or area's Historical Society to see if there is information about prior test drilling.
