A guy stole 500 dollars worth of medical cannabis from my house. In a rush to leave, he left his phone and is now threatening me and my friends. (WA) (self.legaladvice)

So this happened at 2am last night after a buddy brought his friends over to hang out. I first noticed the cannabis in my room was missing this morning and that is when i found his phone. The guy who stole my cannabis messaged me that morning demanding that i meet him somewhere else other then my house to give him his phone back and i told him that i will give his phone back as long as he gave my cannabis back too. He said no and that leaves me where i am now.

I filed a police report but that is where things get tricky. I live in a fraternity house and do not want the name of my fraternity to get tarnished. But the dude is threatening me and my friends now and i dont feel safe meeting with him at all so im wondering what would be the best legal way to get my cannabis back since i really do need it for my pain along with getting the guy who stole my cannabis back his phone.

If you filed a police report already, then turn the phone in to them.

You can wait for them to complete their investigation, and see what that produces, or you can sue the suspect in small claims court.

You can't hold his property over an allegation or you will get in perhaps even more trouble. He has it in writing that you have his property and will not return it until he returns what you allege he stole from you. That's pretty damning.

I should have added that but I told him that we would give his phone back if he came and picked it up. He said no to that I do not have the means of transportation to give it back to him at his place.

Give the police the phone and also consult a lawyer in your area.

Also be a good idea to back up any logs of any threats he's made against you or your friends, they'll be useful if/when this goes to court.

Couple ounces could easily be $500. It's not exactly a small amount, but it's certainly not an amount to be black/grey market dealing in a place where you can literally go to a store.
