Apocalypse wasn't an interesting villain. I'm not the biggest fan of superhero films, but their strength lives or dies in their ability to make a convincing/intriguing villain.

Everyone always boasts about Spiderman 2 being a great film. It actually isn't. The wit and the structure aren't particularly good. The SFX are OK, but where it succeeds is with Alfred Molina - his performance is great and his villain quite convincing.

Molina's performance is fine, but he is not the 'reason' that movie is so good. Spiderman 2 perfectly mixes action, comedy and drama. It's so well paced, has some great stuff with the whole 'choice' aspect for peter's identity.

Apocalypse sucked. Forgetable

You'd think, but Marvel's made a bunch of successful movies lately with lackluster villains.

Marvel is about Heros.

DC is about Villains. Or at least it was under Nolan.

That's an over simplification that doesn't hold up at all. That only really applies to Dark Knight and even then Bruce still got a lot of focus and character work.

Yeah the Marvel movies are definitely way more focused on the heroes, but they did give us Loki.

Winter Soilder is also a great arch. Not necessarily a true villain but still.

I meant critically.

Even still, Ant-Man got good critical reception and they probably had the blandest comic book villain to date.

Get out of here.

That belongs to Malekith the Accursed from Thor: The Dark World.

He's so bland, you probably forgot he even existed.

Ant-Man was likeable though and the overall premise and visuals of shrinking is kinda cool and worked well. The battle between Ant Man and Yellowjacket is actually one of my favorites.

Eh, the reviews for it were pretty lacklustre. E.g. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jul/19/ant-man-review-mark-kermode

RT score is quite high, though, so I guess you have a point. I think Marvel's success is not in making good films, but in not making bad ones, if that makes sense. They hit a spot between being bland and bold, as the kermode review points out.

True. Sometimes they make good movies with the last two Captain America ones, but I think a lot of the response to Ant-Man has to do with the fact that expectations for it were so low people felt it was way better than it was when it exceeded those expectations.
