To me, this points out what is already going to be done in the media in terms of the differences between these 2 men. Jared was a middle aged man who wasn't deemed attractive so it was easy to hate him for being gross. With Salling, you know this is going to be made into some sort of sob story, maybe even an ET segment of what happened in his life that turned him to this. I think Darienne's joke is reminding us that they're both on the same level.

But I'm also a Darienne stan so maybe I'm grasping at straws. The offseason is getting to me.

God damn it people use your brains. Ask yourself who is the butt o this joke? Answer-Darienne. The joke is essentially that she's a horrible person. Or a commentary on how look obsessed our culture is. In no way can it be construed as the victims are the intended target.

Seriously, I laughed. This is a solid joke. Even if it wasn't funny to me, I'm sick of all the scrutiny social media has over every single dark joke. I'm a survivor of abuse. I won't pretend to speak for every survivor out there, as each experience is different. But this particular one chuckled when reading what Darienne wrote. It was a joke. I didn't feel offended. Humor actually got me through some very dark times, and I'd hate to see her be lambasted over this. What I went through was horrible and I survived THAT. I can survive a Facebook joke (that really wasn't that offensive and I doubt she was condoning pedophilia). Again, I'm not trying to speak for every survivor out there, just my two cents.

I dislike these new "mainstream" fans. They don't understand that drag is satire. If I were a Queen, I would not be apologetic about what I say or do. If it offends you, that's your problem. Understand that there is no malice behind what the Queens say or do. They're there to lift our spirits up through dancing, lip-syncing, comedy, and other amazing talents these people do. In the words of Sharon Needles as Joan Rivers, "It's comedy!" It's just for fun.

It's hard to look at him and not think he's attractive (unless he's just not your type whatsoever), and I think that's why it's funny outside of her clever phrasing.

Why do we assume pedophiles {edit: always look like} disgusting creeps? It's a visibility problem that can actually further these types of crimes, not to mention negatively influence the lives of totally innocent people who just happen to be creepy looking.

Making a joke starts that conversation in a way that really gets people riled up, and makes people feel better about the fact that they might have a shallow attraction to a monster.

Good one, Darienne.

[–]WetCupcakesYou are a whore 9

Well, pedophiles ARE disgusting creeps.

Just because you find one/them attractive, that doesn't change the fact that they're disgusting creeps. Their physical appearance has nothing to do with them being seen as such. It's their actions.

I meant that people assume they just look like disgusting creeps, and that that appearance can be deceiving -- a concept commonly used in comedy.

I feel like that's pretty abundantly clear from the rest of what I wrote, but I apologize if that was misconstrued.

no, you were totally clear. people always assume pedophiles (and sex offenders in general) are these fat white guys with thick mustaches and wire-rimmed glasses who drive white vans and live with their mothers. that's not so.

[–]SalchichaIndia Ferrah 26

What an ignorant statement coming from an LGBT sub. Most pedophiles are not child molesters or monsters. They know their feelings are wrong but they can't help it, and the majority of them don't act on it. No pedophile WANTS to be attracted to children. We never hear about non-predator pedophiles because "coming out" would literally ruin their lives.

I'm not saying being a pedophile is just like being homosexual, but they are similar in the way that the person is attracted to something that is considered wrong, and they can do nothing to change it. I know this opinion is controversial, but I feel sympathetic towards the otherwise normal people who carry that burden and would never abuse a child.

And before anyone asks, I am predominately attracted to older men in their 30's and over. And I am not saying we should be ok with pedophiles. It's just something to think about.

Incredible. People compare gay people to pedophiles to condemn gay people... and now gay people are comparing themselves to pedophiles to defend pedophiles. Gurl, it's more fitting to compare pedophiles to psychopaths who struggle with the impulse to commit assault and violence... Yes, it sucks that they're the way they are, but they're nothing like us, i.e. people who are attracted to people who are capable of consenting to sex

[–]mothahasarrivedI'm Shannel and I wear costumes

I know right, last time I got fucked in the ass I didn't have to go through a lifetime of therapy to deal with the psychological damage that was forced upon me in the situation because I was a consenting adult.

Gay people having sex is a lot different to pedophiles forcing sex. Only one of those actions leads to long lasting trauma.

That kind of not all pedophiles rhetoric will ultimately lead to more pedophiles normalising their urges imo. Being a pedophile is in a whole different ballpark to being gay.

yeah, this, thank you. I'm not sure when exactly we became a sub that defends pedophiles, but it's gross

And using the "oh but people think gays are weird, so we should understand" argument to do it.

I've seen that used to defend a lot of things on this sub, but paedophilia really takes the cake.

[–]LuckyWriterMichelle Visage 2

Yeah definitely.

I honestly put it in the same category as people who are into rape fantasies. Rape is disgusting and wrong - but it's not wrong for two people in love to act it out - and I'd rather someone who gets off on that to just fantasize about it rather than go out and actually do it.

As long as you're not hurting anyone, I say judge not lest you be judged.

Edit: and this isn't to say I'm in agreement with the thing just playing devil's advocate because there are PLENTY of people who think gay people are disgusting/wrong/immoral and there's no absolute agreed upon right/wrong in this world.

There are plenty of people who think gay people are disgusting but I would not want comparisons to form with being gay and pedophilia since one involves being attracted to the same sex and the other involves being attracted to people who can't consent/no voice/more vulnerable.

[–]LuckyWriterMichelle Visage -2

I know - but it's the closest possible comparison. Many people think gay is disgusting and put it on the same level in their minds anyway. Are they correct? I don't believe so, but there are so very few things in this world that are absolute. So for the point of the argument...it fits.

People who are against gay people usually make those comparisons and I don't think they are similar enough for a comparison. Being attracted to animals is also viewed as wrong but I would not compare it to gay people. Just because people view it wrong does not make them more similar.

As someone who was abused I didn't find this funny. I'm not going to tell her she can't make jokes about it, because that's not my place, but I think it's important to remember that behind every rape or pedophilia joke there is a victim who has to hear it.

[–]milkcaramelBob the Drag Queen

[–]youashadyapemy nerves are rattled, my spirit is shaken, my soul is confused

As someone who was also abused, I laughed and genuinely thought it was clever. What is difficult for one person to hear isn't difficult for another. We're all on a journey of healing, every one of us, and we don't all deal with it the same way or on the same timeline.

I'm now at a point in my life where I no longer "carry" those memories and I hope that one day you can say the same. I remember them because the healing made me strong, but they don't weight me down. Because even if someone jokes that it's your fault, or makes light of it, there will come a day...or at least I hope it does for you...that you are so fully aware that the burden belongs to someone else and not you that you can laugh and enjoy being free of that weight. All that to say, I appreciate you recognizing and verbalizing that it is not anyone's place to tell her she can't make those jokes.

This concludes the serious portion of my day. Be well!

[–]milkcaramelBob the Drag Queen

Thank you, I too hope there comes a time where those memories do not hold as much weight over me as they do now. I really do. But at the same time I have to say, there will never come a time where I laugh at someone telling me it was my fault, even if they do so lightheartedly. Whether I know for a fact that it wasn't my fault or not, that is just never an acceptable thing to say to a sexual abuse survivor as far as I am concerned.

So while yes, I can appreciate that not everyone's humor is my humor and other survivors are definitely allowed to find Darienne's joke funny even if I don't, I draw the line at telling someone it was their fault.

This is the camp I'm in. If you don't think it's funny, don't laugh, unfollow, whatever. Trying to police other people's humor has got to fucking stop, though. How you react to the joke has zero to do with the person making it. If you think it was insensitive and it made you feel shitty to hear it, that's legitimate, but that means you decide to no longer listen to or appreciate that person and move the fuck on.

as someone who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this disappointed me. I'm not going to rain on anyone's parade and be like, "THIS ISN'T FUNNY!!!" whatever, you can think it's funny, I don't care. it just depresses me

i'll say this, i've lost a couple people to suicide, and when people make suicide jokes, as hard as i try, i can't really find them funny. they just depress/upset me because it's a hard topic for me. but i let them do it. like you said i'm not willing to rain on anyone's parade because i feel like just about anything is grounds for jokes at least sometimes. we all have our things that we aren't able to laugh at because they touch us too deeply. but i wouldn't pull the offensive card on anyone making suicide jokes either.

You obviously have a right to feel the way you do, but I've had several friends lost to suicide and I'll still laugh at a joke about it (if it's funny, of course). I'm also a survivor of abuse (not sexual, though) and actually seek out comedy about the topic and make my own because that's how I deal with it. That's how lots of people deal with it. Heck, maybe Darrienne is a sexual abuse survivor, but I don't think she needs to be in order to make a joke about it.

I just think people have to realize that the point to comedy is usually to deal with tough issues we don't know how to deal with otherwise. Comedians have been using jokes for years to confront injustice and tragedy, that's the whole point. If you research the cognitive processing of comedy you'll find that laughter is basically the mind's reaction to incongruent concepts being shoved together. It's a natural reaction. The comic's job is to point out these incongruities to the audience, and the best ones have done it to confront racism, sexism, homophobia, terrorism, etc., etc. because those things don't make sense, and neither does sexual abuse. People say these things aren't funny, but the fact that they are so outside the norm, so incongruent with how things should be logically, makes them inherently funny. The mind literally can't make sense of it. Some people respond by shutting it out completely, and thus never talking about it, and some people choose to confront it with humor.

I'm not going after you or anyone else, as you said you don't tell people what to do. I'm just trying to show that just because you lived through a trauma doesn't mean you, or anyone else, can't find humor in it. You say you've experienced suicide in your life and thus avoid the topic. Well, if you're going to do that then you're going to end up shutting out a lot of things in your life. For example, war is terrible, people die and are maimed, but Jon Stewart made a whole career out of basically mocking it. I don't know if you laughed at his comedy, but the point is every topic is tough for someone out there. We can't start shutting it all out. But if you don't feel comfortable or if the joke isn't funny to you, that's fine of course. I just mean don't think these topics can't be funny. Everything is funny. I cried for a whole week after Newtown (I'm a teacher) and then started dealing with it by joking about guns and America.

Anyway, I've rambled. I hope you get my point and that I'm not challenging you.

Hey, I totally agree with you that humor can be a great way to get over horrible things in life. In my opinion this is why we invented comedy in the first place, and satire.

I don't like suicide jokes because it's still something I'm reeling from and I'm not really ready to laugh at it yet. I don't know if I ever will because it was something that really fucked up a lot of things in my life, not just me losing someone. It's something I'm still processing and trying to deal with. I'm also not trying to hide from it or run from it. I specifically make a point of not running out of the room when someone talks about suicide. I just don't like it.

No worries, you have every right to feel any way you do about anything. And obviously you're mature enough to know you can't force those feelings on anyone else. I was just presenting another side of it. Some people use humor to deal with things, some don't and neither has a right to tell the other which is 'correct'. We all grieve in different ways. I appreciate you sharing your experiences.

For sure man. I honestly do hope I can laugh at it someday. I think it would help a lot :) All I know is things get better slowly with time.

yeah...even if I told (or just politely asked) people not to make jokes like this, it's not like that's going to stop them from making them. I just kind of have to remove myself from the situation because I know I have no dog in the fight

Yeah that's true too. I guess my opinion on it is more strong than yours because I also think they have a right to make jokes on those topics. (Within reason--at a nightclub is fine to me, but you would never make a joke like that at a survivor's support group, etc.)

I usually just change the subject. I think most (decent) people pick up on the fact that (insert topic) bothers you for whatever reason so they usually don't bring it up again, but they don't feel like too much of a dick either.

I'm just tired of this reflexive outrage at any queen who makes a joke that pushes boundaries. Just because they push boundaries doesn't make it good (e.g. Sharon Needles' lazy black-face for the sake of sensationalism and being "edgy" or Trixie's thin Anne Frank), but I actually think Darienne's joke isn't bad. Moreover, the target is clearly both herself, in a self-deprecating way, and disparities in how the media handles cases of sexual misconduct in relation to different celebrities.

Breaking news, a top artist from an intentionally tacky, offensive, no-boundaries art form makes an offensive joke.

God people need to get a grip. (I'll let Alyssa finish the quote for me)

It's a gross, silly joke. Bianca has said much worse. Kinda silly to see this sudden jump on Darienne.

I enjoy a good joke, especially tasteless ones.

They just have to be funny. This was not.

Now Im honestly clueless as to most of the situation besides the initial headline. Did he like mistakenly get a snapchat of someone he thought was barely legal but wasn't or are we talking like even younger and even more disturbing here.

The article says something like thousands of images of "significantly younger than 15 or 16" on his computer. So not like the "oh whatever" kind of pedophilia, but like the "oh that's actually kinda fucked up" kind.

[–]lifewickedfastBob the Drag Queen

Oh. Yeah. Thats the latter. Uhm.

[–]TheOneDocaka Helela. Oh please don't you know who I think I am? 0

I'm pretty sure Lady Bunny made exactly the same joke about Gary Glitter...

As in usual Darienne fashion, in bad taste.

I wonder if this will become another 100 plus comment thread where users use anything said by a queen to have an very off topic and very tumblr discussion.

why are any and all discussions concerning social issues dubbed "tumblr" jw

Because "is pedophilia bad??" isn't really a conversation that needs to be had, especially not on some random fucking subreddit. But people have no friends and lots of shit to say, myself included

      [–]BrokeWhoreganI'm serving #TheBestICanDoRightNowInThisSituation 8

Because that is the online community that has amassed a reputation for taking social issues to their most severe (and often unreasonable) depths... whenever I come across a person that wants to make a non-issue into an issue (or make a legitimate issue into A SCREAMING BONFIRE OF DRAMATICS), they are usually spending a lot of time on tumblr getting these ideas that they can be policing and alienating to everyone they talk to.

It's kind of a shame, because so many of these issues are genuine problems that we need to be talking about, often and openly... but like pretty much all social movements a few radicalists have to drive it into the ground and turn it into a joke for most rational people.

"Making fun of the perpetrators is fine. I did not make fun of a victim." YAS DARIENNE. Thats exactly what she did but yet bitches want to then say that she was "diminishing the crime" UGH. I swear, people just WANT something to be outraged about nowadays. So annoying.

I laughed. I think part of the joke is about what free passes attractive white male criminals get in the public consciousness. People can be offended but they need to remember....it doesn't automatically make them right.
