Sure is

50% chance kid taking bus after his graduation.

100% sure. Tassel is on the left side.

Who ever knows what side it should be on before getting to graduation?

I just graduated on Sunday and they told us I don't know how many times to put it on the right side until we actually got our diplomas.

EDIT: Phone is dumb

So you're going to have it on the right side for three months, eh?

Yup pretty much. Going to have to pay a lot more to switch it the next time.

[–]finally_a_normal_guy 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

I just graduated in Sunday

Dropout here. I'm pretty sure you mean "on Saturday", right?

[–]An_Awesome_Name [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

No, it was on Sunday afternoon. I did that from my phone, so I'm going to go ahead and blame autocorrect/me typing it too quickly to actually care.

I graduated Tuesday and I had no damn clue. When they told us to turn it to the left side, mine was already there lol

Bumpy ride? The bus could have flipped that tassel.

Eh, they don't really flip that easily.

Am a tassel, can confirm - I may flop but I don't flip very easily at all.

It's not really crazy. I graduated last night and half the people in my school took buses/subways.

Gotta get there somehow

Good job man.

It's really interesting to observe cultural differences between the States and most European countries. Here public transport does not have the negative connotation it has there, so at worst I'd probably wonder if he's running late.

I didn't immediately think negative connotation about the bus as much as I thought "oh wow his family must not have been present to see him graduate"

Eh you have to get there pretty early as a student, maybe his parents are coming from work.

Or he's in his way home after hanging it with friends after the graduation party.

Grads generally show up earlier than everybody else. When I graduated, I had to be at the arena a good hour or two before it was scheduled to start.

Also, noone wears such clothing to a graduation here (I guess it's highschool graduation). Men come in suits, women in dresses and that's it.

Those are sailor hats

Yes, made of välfärd and svintuffa älgar!!!

I think I saw those at Ikea.

Do it yourself hats!

Only requires one tool.

(I swear to god if I setup another joke and the other guy gets the gold...)

I'm not feeling particularly witty but I'll take a gold.

Enjoy the gold!

I feel really bad for the guy who set up the joke, but at the same time I wish I was there to steal his gold too.

Kyuuga waka teki wo kurau!

I was going to remark on how silly they look, but it's not like these hats are any less silly.

I was pretty sad when I never received my student cap from U of Helsinki. Guess you have to actually attend graduation...

Eh.... you don't get it from university, you get it when you become eligible to study in a university (after your matriculation exam in gymnasium). Engineering/tech students in Aalto get a special cap, but it's more of a special case.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_cap

Do they get upgraded as you go? I thought you got like a tassel for doing your masters degree, and then upgraded to a top hat when you complete a PhD

Tassel? The badge in front of the cap? By default the cap has the university of helsinki badge, but you can change it to your respective university's own badge if you want to. I'm not aware of changing it to some special master's degree badge, but I'm not a master yet :P

And yea, you can buy the PhD top hat if you want to when you finish your doctoral degree.

Yeah, that's the special case hat I mentioned. It's for engineering/tech students and they get it when they start in the school, not after graduation.

http://www.ttyy.fi/en/teekkari-culture/teekkari-cap

Does the hat come with three cute blond girls in matching hats? Or are those separate?

Depends on your grade lol

They just do everything better. Damn them.

Same in Finland - outside of that you just wear something "nice" - typically suits for boys and dresses for girls.

we did (ghent, belgium)

Nope you're too late, someone already spoke for all of Europe. You wore, or will wear, a suit or dress.

Don't you guys get a sword too?

lol no. We did get a piece of paper though.

Women do wear dresses and men wear dress shirt without the jacket in North America. It's just that they wear this gown over it.

That's usually what's under the gown.

Even that is getting over board - I just turned up in my school uniform.

This is highly sensationalized.

Public transit in the states varies highly by location, but I would argue there isn't a strong negative connotation where the transit is good, like New York and DC. I took a bus to my college graduation... And I went to a pretty good school.

Exactly. And other places, where public transportation is terrible, (for any number of reasons) the negative connotation is earned, because people really do only use it because they have absolutely no other choice.

Depends on the city, really.

Yeah, true. From what I gather it's ok to take the subway in NY but do it in LA and you're a pleb. Right?

Hell if I know. I'm from north houston so I think everyone's a piece of a shit.

I am from Dallas and I agree, people from Houston are shit.

As someone from Houston,

Subway in LA? That's where you buy over priced sandwiches and cardboard pizzas right?

No, that's Penn Station.

Mainly because public transport sucks in most places.

How come? At some time cities in the USA had proper trams (electric streetcars).

Then General Motors swooped in and said: "remove those rails, with our superior gasoline powered buses we can reach every place in the city"

Cities complied, and the moment the tracks disappeared, the bus schedules were minimized. The investment in (new) tracks was to much.

But luckily good guy GM had a solution: "Everyone buy our superior gasoline powered cars, they will bring you everywhere!"

Detroit happened, and public transport became an absolute system for poor people that couldn't buy a car.

wiki: The streetcar conspiracy

Docu about this shit

I don't know enough to say you're wrong, but being from Chicago, public transportation is really efficient and not second rate. Professionals use the trains and buses. My sister is a lawyer and takes the bus because it's the most convenient. They're also all electric trains and have always been from my understanding. Chicago may be an exception though, we got to rebuild after the Chicago Fire torched almost the entire city to ashes.

Not even every city with a population the size of Chicago has good public transportation. Texas cities are a great example, they have huge populations, but they also are spread over a lot of land area. So most people drive, therefore public transportation is bad (most of the taxpayers drive cars, so why spend money on buses/trains).

I would say NYC and Chicago should have the best public transportation, since they have much higher population densities than the rest of the biggest cities in the US.

I've lived in the South most my life, but have traveled to NYC and Chicago several times (and used public trans). It's much different.

New York, Chicago and other major cities have public transportation because of how dense the city is and the demand is high for it. Cities like Waco, Texas, Ocala, Florida, and Colorado Springs, Colorado have little to no public transport making getting a car a necessity.

That's what I think a lot of people are forgetting. Where I live in the US, there is no bus that would have taken me to school/graduation. It doesn't exist. I could have walked I suppose, but according to Google maps, it would be a 4.5 hour walk. While possible, most people would probably have skipped graduation.

It's not so much public transportation it's the bus. Generally speaking they are fucking terrible. It takes forever to get anywhere on one and they're generally run down, smell like bum piss, and have drug addicts on them. Trains are generally pretty good though.

Well honestly its not just negative its that outside a few major cities that are compact the public transport sucks big time LA being one of the worst in my opinion if it was better i would use it fuck it sucks wasting hours of your day in traffic with millions of others

The reason being is that the majority of cities in the US have shitty public transportation so you don't use it unless you absolutely need to. It's not negative it's just widely known as a major inconvenience rather than a convenience like it's known in Europe.

It probably has something to do with European public transit not being totally shit everywhere all the time. I'm not American, but i can tell you that no matter how bad your public transit is, ours here is probably worse.

I found it weird that he seems to be riding the bus by himself to the graduation ceremony...

Public transport is definitely seen as second rate in my west-european country.

Here public transport does not have the negative connotation it has there

Are you saying public transport has a negative connotation in Europe? Because it sure doesn't in the US.

In America, one of the reasons that public transportation has a negative connotation is because it's fucking terrible. I doubt that if metroes and buses were remotely reliable or convenient, that there would be that much of a stigma around them.

In large cities public transportation is normal. Here in Chicago TONS of people take the bus or train everywhere, its more practical and can be faster.

So?

this is /r/pics. I ask myself that same question a lot here

If it invokes a strong, emotionally response, it belongs on /r/pics.

invokes a strong, emotionally response

That's giving this shitpost way too much credit.

The only emotion I feel is anger that people think a black guy riding a bus is noteworthy.

It's kind of sad that his family isn't taking him

I graduated from high school, from college, and from grad school. My parent's never took me to graduation, but at least one parent was always there... Usually, the grads had to meet up somewhere in one building, and all the observers had to go somewhere else and stand in line just to get a seat, so it just made sense for us to go separately since we would end up having to be in two completely different places.

At my college they rent out the Meadowlands stadium every year and all the students have to find their own way there. So it's a bunch of college students in gowns on the train going from school to the stadium

Shoot up to Boston around graduation time, every form of public transportation is packed with kids on their way to the ceremony. I avoid Boston like the plague around May.

Maybe they're at work and meeting him there? I don't see why this is sad.

I thought the same thing. This kid has a lot of determination.

His dad's still out getting cigarettes

I got news for you...

he's got 99 problems but a bus ain't one

hovah!

Definitely new york. Those mta buses all have that look going.

How do you know they aren't on the bus with him?

I don't get this at all why is that sad. I took the bus to my college graduation and meet my parents there at the ceremony. Who's to say his parents aren't meeting him there.

My parents never had a vehicle, nor driver's licences.

My school(s) were close so I always walked. Had it not been, I'd taken the bus. No biggie.

Like really, what was OP hoping to accomplish by this post? Karma?

What's wrong with taking a bus?

Is he supposed to drive up in a limo or something...?

Normally graduations are celebrated with family. He's alone so you could make the assumption that his family isn't going. You could also make the assumption that he's meeting his family there. So I guess it depends on your perspective. Seems like most people in this thread are just focusing on "wow people think taking public transit is bad?".

He's alone so you could make the assumption that his family isn't going. You could also make the assumption that he's meeting his family there. So I guess it depends on your perspective.

Every graduation I've been in, I've had to arrive at least 2 hours prior to the event. The fact that people might not want to sit in the heat for 2 extra hours of nothing isn't that surprising. In fact, I got myself to all three of those graduations, but had a dozen or so family in attendance.

Seems like most people in this thread are just focusing on "wow people think taking public transit is bad?".

Well the title is "kid taking the bus" not "kid going alone to graduation".

If this were "white kid in car going to graduation", I don't think we'd be having this conversation.

[–]PM_ME_VUDU_CODES 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

That's a lot of assumptions we need to find this kid and set the record straight

Hell yeah we do. That way people can stop bitching haha!

Or maybe his family doesn't have a car? Maybe his family is sitting in other seats on the bus.

Yep exactly.

I had family give me a ride to my graduation, even though I took the bus to school and work every single day.

I can't imagine having to take the bus alone to my graduation unless my family or anyone special to me wasn't going.

I did this. I lived about a mile from campus and hopped on the bus because I didn't want to walk in the heat to meet my family. The only thing you can definitively tell from this photo is that someone wanted cheap karma by taking a picture of a stranger.

[–]Can_I_have_some_more 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Make up your mind. Is it a Bus or a Train.

I took the bus to my graduation. But I changed into my gown once I was there

I really hope at least one person went to see them walk. :(

Me too:/ everyone keeps saying "so what if he took the bus?" Taking the bus to graduation is not the point. Going to graduation alone is no fun:( hope he has some friends he's meeting up with.

Good for him, he is better than OP.

Congratulations to him

So what?

Are you saying that in US he'd be perceived as poor and under-privilaged? Are we supposed to pitty him, because he doesn't have his own pickup or something?

States sure are a fucked-up place.

Graduation (high school or college) tend to be pretty big events for a nuclear family. The fact that this kid is riding a bus probably means his family is not attending. He'll be in a gigantic crowd of crying mothers and ecstatic grads taking family photos. Kids will get on stage and all of their friends will cheer for them.

Being alone at graduation sucks.

Or maybe the graduation ceremony starts at 12:00, but graduating students are required to be there at 11:30 due to some preparations and his family arrives later?

In my case I had to be at the church graduation was taking place at at 3 hours beforehand, because there were traffic concerns as well as preparations.

That is making a TON of assumptions. A lot of high schools have the grads come in earlier than the families and friends. Almost everyone I know took the bus to their graduation too, they still had plenty of people to greet and congratulate them when they walked.

[–]Ontain 1

depends on the school. in mine the kids were expected to come much earlier and also stay a bit after as well. most didn't go home with their parents.

I'm sure he had at least some friends to cheer him up there.

[–]Argintip [

My family has made a big deal out of all ten of our graduations and every single time the graduate went to the event by themselves.

Are you saying that in US he'd be perceived as poor and under-privilaged?

Yes, because he can't afford a personal automobile or to hire a taxi. That is reasonable depending on your definition of poor.

Are we supposed to pitty him, because he doesn't have his own pickup or something?

*pity

Also, why does he need a pickup?

The reason why anyone would pity him is because his family isn't taking him.

States sure are a fucked-up place.

Nope. You're pretty fucking stupid though, so there's that...

No its sad that he's alone. States are the greatest damn place in the world.

Fuck this post.

I went alone to my graduation. Only because we had to be there a bit early to get prepared. When it came time to walk, there was my family.

Single pictures don't show the whole story. I love seeing pictures like this where the subject chimes in with the full story, making everyone's assumptions false. Hopefully, this kid does the same. Maybe his parents were behind him, maybe they were on their way, maybe he didn't have family, maybe they had to work to support his college goals... For me, the picture shows his dedication to school and he should be proud. Taking the bus, alone, to his graduation. Awesome.

Clearly this kid is showing determination to reap the rewards of his efforts even if he has to go it alone. He is gonna go places ...

i dont get it ?

sounds like the most mundane thing ever... someone riding a bus...

This was in San Antonio. I think several students had taken the bus since they had to be there really early before the ceremony and were met with family after graduation.

The pretentiousness of this post is astounding.

Paging Dr. Rorschach.

It's an entirely mundane picture of a black guy in a graduation cap and gown, riding a bus. That is all the context we have.

If you look at the picture and see an inner-city kid, from a low-income family who has to take the bus to graduation because the people in his life who should be sharing the occasion with him are too negligent/disintetested/busy to go, then you're actually looking at a picture of yourself.

Having the capacity for sympathy is a wonderful gift, but when we make up sad stories about a stranger based on inscrutable evidence, then it's just called being condescending.

I'm unaffected by this. No one showed up to mine, but I didn't mind. Lived with my grandparents and they were just too old and couldn't make it. Besides, high school graduation should be a standard, not an achievement.

Well, not everyone is you. Graduating highschool for someone else might be an accomplishment. For me, it wasn't a big deal but I can see why it is for other people who struggle in school.

Does he not realize that he can put the gown and cap on once he gets there?

Let the kid be proud of his accomplishments!

Why exactly is this shit worthy of an /r/pics submission?

I was thinking the same. He's going to his graduation and taking the bus. Both things are as normal as they get.

I took the bus to my Junior HS graduation. My mom and aunt came with me. It was a happy day. I'm sure the kid is fine. Wonder if he had to sing at his graduation like we did?

Maybe he is in DC where it's crowded enough that everyone takes the bus?

USF? Possibly Tampa campus?

You see this on the NYC subway all the time.

[–]Blu- 0

So? I took the bus to all my graduations.

The thing that stands out to me is that he wore it outside the school. We changed in school right before and right afterwords since they are cumbersome.

Does the school have a rule against not putting them on when you get there?

Half my class took the bus/connecting train to my graduation. (Sweden). Hell, one even took a boat! Public transport is sweet, gets you where you're going!

This is UNT and they had shuttle rides to campus for parking.
