Everyone seems so keen on Zlatan joining, I assume this will be down voted to hell, but I wanted to share some considerations we should have about signing Zlatan
It's very possible that playing on Ligue 1 with a squad superior to the rest of their competitors has masked a gradual overall decline in Zlatan's abilities, what happens if he gets here and doesn't merit a place? Obviously he loves everything to revolve around him, he admits he's not sharing what club he's joining because he enjoys reading the stories and loves all the attention he's getting, not to mention exploiting that by shamelessly using the speculation to flog his clothing line, baiting everyone with a mysterious announcement and then declining to answer (clever advertising, yes, but that's beside the point). The point is, if his performances don't merit a starting place, will his ego cause a reaction that leads to a toxic dressing room that kills performances on the pitch a la Chelsea? I love Mourinho, but his last two stints have been plagued with dressing room difficulties, and even if he didn't cause them, he couldn't remedy them.
We're hearing from Dominus Marzio about Aubameyang joining City, and seeing as he of all people hasn't mentioned us being involved, combined with the fact that it would be extremely out of character for the club to not pursue a player like him (look at how hard we tried for Müller last year, Auba looks far more likely to leave in comparison), it's more than likely that our pursuit of Zlatan means we're losing the chance to sign Auba, which is insane beyond comprehension, as he is THE exact type of player that we need in attack, a 26 year old established forward entering what is generally the best part of an attacker's career who has shown his skill both in the centre and on the right wing; Zlatan is 35 in October, at the very end of his top level career, if not already past it.
On the topic of age, the fact Zlatan wanted assurances from Mourinho he would be first choice means, if Zlatan gets his way, Rashford spends at least a significant amount of time on the bench, stalling his development and his meteoric rise; yes, some will argue that Rashford is young and that he needs to be gradually introduced, but Rooney started playing consistently at the top level when he was 16, younger than Rashford, and made 33 appearances for Everton in that season, less than Rashford has for us.
Even if Rashford would need to be rested, Martial would be able to take centre forward (with presumably Auba playing right wing, if we switched our pursuit I feel he is very attainable) so Memphis could get another shot in the first team; considering how deadly he looked linking up with Shaw at the start of last season, Shaw's return could very likely spark a renaissance in form by allowing Memphis's constant cutting inside to be mitigated by the threat of Shaw's incisive runs and overlaps, adding that dynamism to our left wing and giving us a reason to keep him from leaving and fulfilling his obvious potential at another club like Pogba.
If Martial is forced to stay at left wing by Zlatan/Rashford then that also means Young is totally forced out of contention as he'll have both Martial and Memphis in front of him, and his performances before his injury certainly warranted a place in the team, even as a rotation option. If he leaves for more minutes and we get no replacement we lose what has become a great jack-of-all-trades player that can play LW, LB, RW, RB positions, as well as fill in decently in other positions, a good utility player like John O'Shea.
Anyway, just wanted to share, hopefully I can get some thoughts from other people.
