African footballers at United (self.reddevils)

With the Bailly deal looking like it might be going through in the coming weeks, a friend of mine and I got to talking about African footballers who've succeeded in the Premier League (Drogba, Okocha, Kanu, Essien, the Toures, and now Mahrez) and whether Bailly has a chance to hopefully match them. Realized then that there really haven't been any such examples at United. Can only remember 2 players from Africa in the first team since I started following United, and one of them is Djemba Djemba.

Why do people think this is? Is it just a coincidence or down to other factors?

It's a common opinion that SAF wasn't a fan of African players due to the African Cup of Nations (ACON). The ACON is usually held in January-February which means that you would lose your player for almost a month in a very important phase of the season.

Coincidence. It's not as if we haven't bought African players. It just hasn't worked out until now.

We've also signed Quinton Fortune, Mame Biram Diouf and Manucho. I think it's a coincidence. We also technically signed Mikel and we've been interested in players like Mahmadou Diarra and Essien

Quinton Fortune and Manucho, there's two more. Pretty sure Ferguson was on record as saying he didn't generally buy African players because you lose them every two years during the African Cup of Nations.

Work permits are another reason; We tried to sign Essien as a kid but we'd have had to loan him out to Royal Antwerp (for 3 years I think) until he got a Belgian passport, which he understandably wasn't keen on.

Evra, Diouf, and Nani were born in Senegal (Cape Verde for Nani). Zaha was born in Ivory Coast. Quinton Fortune is South African.
