Your #2 is an extremely good suggestion. Look, admins are human too, and the more you lay things out for us - the good, the bad, and the ugly - the easier it is for us. Now, my team isn't afraid of hard work (they wouldn't be working here if they were), but a little bit of help goes a long way in making things better for everyone.

I think these are some decent guidelines to live by:

1) As short as is reasonably possible. We love you all, but I don't care about the weather where your Great Auntie lives. Tell us what we need to know, but don't assume great familiarity with the topic. Even if it's the #1 Most Important Dramah you've seen in some time...

2) If you must send us a novel, I'm a huge fan of the tl;dr, and of reasonable sections with headers. I've got a lot going on around me, and it's hard to find the time to read whole paragraphs. I'll do it - but if you stick some guideposts in there for me, it makes things easier.

3) Link, link, link. I believe you, and I know that YOU would never lie to me.... but I gotta see some verification, please. Even if the post has disappeared, I can probably find it. Permalinks are your friend.

4) Ask. I'm almost always checking in on reddit - several times a day - and if you're not sure if it's okay to bump us, just ask me. I'll let you know roughly how far back we are.

5) Remember that weekends are short staff - things go back to usual on Mondays and we bang through the weekend tickets fast, but if your sub isn't on fire, we may not respond to it on Saturday or Sunday. We'll get to you, I promise. We prioritize things that are time sensitive on weekends.

6) Good subject lines help. If you put "r/MySub is burning down", we're more likely to grab it if we see it come in and things are busy. (With that said, don't think we don't know who over-escalates. Don't make that a pattern either. Be honest with us. Take this guy here, for instance. He over-escalates. Don't be like him.)

That's about right. At this point, depending on the day, they're between 21 and 27 days behind on that queue. It's not a priority workstream for us - right now, our focus is still on crushing our backlog of modmail and incoming support mail - but it's one that we try to keep from spiraling out of control. Once we get through this backlog crunch, I'm going to be looking at restructuring some workstreams, and hopefully we'll be able to increase the support given to this set of issues as well, but for now, with limited staff availability, it's my feeling that responding to modmail and support (as well as account takeovers) is our priority.

I'd be open to discussing ideas for ways that we could improve this, once we're through the crunch, if you've got them.

Hi there, /u/PrettyIceCube. thanks for the pointer. I've asked someone from my team to take a look at that discussion. Given that it's currently 10PM on a Friday night, and that I try very hard not to abuse my staff any more than is necessary (don't get me wrong, I take them RIGHT UP TO the limit, but try not to cross into the red zone...), it may be Monday before someone responds. I'm sure you can understand the delay. :)

As you may know, I was an employee at the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia's parent company, for several years. I'm still an administrator and checkuser on Wikipedia. My vantage point there, as both a community leader and a staff member, is a very particular one.

I think that Wikipedia's heart is in the right place with COI restrictions, but the devil is in the details, and those are still very much an open question that is being sorted over there. So I hesitate to wholesale endorse "similar policies to Wikipedia", because I'm not sure exactly what those are yet. :-)

I'm not sure how far behind that one is; it's certainly a lower priority than backlog. I'll look into it, but a week doesn't seem too extreme there.

When I was at Wikimedia, one of the things some of their communities did, which I rather liked, was they referred to them as "indefinite" bans. That is, they could be permanent, or you could successfully petition to have them converted at some future point. But it took away that permanence that you mention.

I am certainly open to such a policy discussion; I can't speak for the rest of the team and to be honest, I'm so new that I don't know what would be involved in such a policy amendment. I'd have to do some internal investigation to see if I can even think about that; I suspect legal would be involved, because that's typically just good policy.

With that said, what you've suggested seems (at least on surface) to be reasonable. Of course, as such, I am duty bound to write and amend it until it's no longer reasonable.... :P (joking, simmer, people, simmer!)

I'll dig around and see what I can find out.

They are definitely being processed, but we usually aren't responding individually to them. They're not being ignored.
