It's arguably not on the same leves as Nazi imagery because they have a larger place in popular culture, and the design does look cool, but it is very jarring to use the flag of an army famous for it's brutality and war crimes.

That's because it's not the same thing. The current flag of Japan is very similar to the Rising Sun flag (Red dot on a white background) and an even more similar flag is still in use today by the Japanese Navy.

What you see here is the result of kids who learned about Imperial Japan in 10th grade World History thinking they know it all and getting offended for the people they think would be offended by this.

You might run into some people who would disapprove of it, but that might just mean they're uneducated or itching to stir something up. This flag is objectively no more offensive than wearing the flag of the Soviet Union.

I always see that on this sub, yet in my entire life I've never ever seen anyone offended or call out that it's an offensive symbol. I've seen it loads in the UK. I can see why it would be elsewhere, but here it's never been a problem. It's pretty much a meme on this sub to post how offensive it is when it comes up.

Hell, there are even a lineage of squadrons that utilise it on their jets.

The Union Jack isn't completely synonymous with those things, though. The USA has done a lot of bad stuff, but most people don't associate the American flag with all that stuff as there's 300 years of other less atrocious history behind it. However, when people think of the Nazi Flag or the Rising Sun, it is so closely intertwined with the horrible acts of those regimes.

I don't think anybody denies the fact that Japan did shitty things in war but no country is exempt from this . Throughout history countries have done awful things under religion, a flag, etc but that doesn't define the religion, flag, county, etc... America killed over 220k innocent people with the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yeah I understand a lot of people argue it was necessary to end the war but killing upwards of 200 thousand innocent people is definetly a horrible act and it was done under the American flag. Bottom line people do shitty things in times of war. The Japanese imperial flag existed for centuries and does not hold the same weight as the nazi flag which was drawn up specifically for the Nazi regime.

A Korean here, can testify that the patch is as offensive as sporting a Nazi symbol proudly. Honestly, WWII era Japan did some dickish stuff to our country - comfort women, forcing Korean men to go be bullet fodders in front of Japanese troops... etc etc. It's also true that Westerners don't really seem to get it but yeah, the "rising sun" symbol's kinda rubbing it in our faces, ya know? Just because it looks "cool" and "this subreddit is full of Westerners anyway so it won't matter" doesn't mean it's not offensive. It doesn't work that way brah.

It's subjective from where you live, really. I can understand if you're from one of the countries or areas that finds it offensive, but this person clearly isn't (can't imagine a lot of Americans/British would find it offensive and call you out) and it shouldn't be as big a problem as people say on here. So many people are almost having a go at this guy just for it.

I think the swastika is slightly more recognizable... Then again I live in an area with nigh on zero or less than 1% ethnic Chinese, Korean, or Japanese and a smattering of second and higher generation German immigrants. So who knows, but you could definitely pull it off in KC or anywhere on the east coast but the west coast I imagine would be pretty receptive in a bad way to that.
