Patch 1.20 - Changelog

With Patch 1.20 we introduce a number of improvements to the base game and Hearts of Stone, including a major HUD overhaul and additional menu options. We've also implemented a number of fixes like the missing interaction from chests in quest titled ‘Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear’ and more! You'll find the full list of changes below:

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Adds book titled 'A Miraculous Guide to Gwent' which displays number of gwent cards missing from player's base-game collection and information on where to find them, thus facilitating completion of achievement titled Collect 'Em All. Tome in question can be obtained either from gwent playing scholar in Prologue or from merchant near St. Gregory's Bridge in Gildorf district of Novigrad.
  • Adds option to display herb names above available interactions.
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to enable enemy level upscaling. If foes are too easy to defeat due to level difference, upscaling will render them a challenge. Change will not affect experience point gain, loot, or quest rewards. Option can be enabled or disabled at any time, even during combat (however, Vitality/Essence of foes is then fully restored).
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to disable automatic drawing and sheathing of sword.
  • Increases incidence of, and thus chances of finding, several monster-based ingredients required for crafting high level alchemy formulae.
  • Improves Player Statistics panel, adding maneuverable Geralt model. Improves visuals in panel for better readability.
  • Adds new functionality to books and scrolls. When first collected, they can be read immediately using single button without need of navigating to Inventory panel. All found but not yet read books and scrolls are stored in Quest Items and Other categories. Once read, books and scrolls can be sold as their content is saved in Books section of Glossary.
  • Improves overall visuals in Character Development panel.
  • Improves Inventory whereby items are divided into additional subcategories within their grids: weapons and armor; oils, potions and bombs; quest items and others; food and equestrian gear; crafting and alchemy. Additionally, introduces redesign of tooltips enabling their resizing with single button. Also, item comparison is easier than ever given addition of summary of changes in stats.
  • Improves Inventory navigation when using gamepad. Slots are divided into sections and right stick can be used to jump between them.
  • Improves Crafting panel in merchant shops. Adds option to purchase missing diagram components directly from Crafting panel when talking to merchant, as well as clearer descriptions and option to resize item descriptions.
  • Introduces redesign of Repair panel in merchant shops. Adds single button enabling players to repair all equipped items.
  • Improves Remove Upgrade panel in merchant shops.
  • Improves Quick Access Menu whereby it can be accessed in one of two modes, with action either paused or slowed depending on button used.
  • Adds functionality whereby crossbow bolts can be switched via Quick Access Menu rather than being equipped from Inventory.
  • Adds counter for bombs and crossbow bolts to Quick Access Menu.
  • Improves region maps by adding pin filtering, more intuitive quest tracking, and a region overview for faster navigation.
  • Adds three new custom pins allowing players to mark areas for future reference.
  • Improves Adrenaline Bar which better displays number of stored Adrenaline Points and their status.
  • Improves display and behavior of Buffs, displayed in more intuitive manner showing time left, strength percentage, stacks, charges, or permanence where applicable. Buff icons now blink for approx. 10 seconds before expiration. For improved visibility, names and exact expiration times for all effects are only visible when Quick Access menu is active.
  • Changes icons for decoctions, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for oils, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes gwent card icons in shops, rendering factions recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for mutagens.
  • Adds feature whereby equipment exceeding player character level can be previewed on character.
  • Improves sorting in Journal whereby active quest tab is always open and tracked quest is at top of quest list.
  • Improves quest item visuals so that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine quest items are now tagged with blue and red exclamation points, respectively.

GWENT
  • Quest titled Collect 'Em All is now marked as failed if player does not succeed in collecting Milva, Vampire Bruxa and Dandelion gwent cards during gwent tournament in quest titled A Matter of Life and Death.

VISUAL
  • Fixes PC-specific issue whereby there was no change in appearance between Nvidia Hairworks 3-day beard (stage 2) and full beard (stage 4).
  • Fixes issue whereby Geralt's clothing was not properly restored after sex scenes.
  • Fixes visual issue whereby guards holding torches would have inverse kinematics when animated.
  • Fixes PS4-specific visual issue whereby texture of water puddles would not fade properly.

GAMEPLAY
  • Updates description of Superior Blizzard potion. Potion now slows time for a short period whenever an enemy is slain. Additionally, during this period actions do not deplete Stamina if 3 Adrenaline Points are available.
  • Fixes issue whereby indicator for Oil charges would appear incorrectly in New Game Plus mode.
  • Fixes issue whereby Flood of Anger skill could endlessly increase Sign intensity.
  • Fixes issue whereby Ciri could be missing her scabbard in certain situations.
  • Fixes issues whereby damage from Northern Wind bombs could be calculated incorrectly.

I feel no need to say anymore than this.

The Witcher 3 is a well crafted game with an excellent story filled with interesting characters that takes place in an expansive world filled with many beautiful places to visit and all manner of vicious monsters and villains to take on with an arsenal of weapons and skills that let you craft the perfect combat style to suit you. It really is in my opinion a game that you should not miss out on.

This game....where do i start? "Sigh" Ok This game has from what iv seen. Goten way to much ♥♥♥♥en prase form people.
Im not unreasionable so i gave it a shot. figured hey might actualy be good. Well thankfully i was rong on the amount adult content i thaught would be in it as that ♥♥♥♥ is distracting as ♥♥♥♥ing hell. However The gameplay style is way to narrowminded. sure sure the witchers suposed to be a good guy. Yeah so what so is the dragonborn And all the other heros in TES. yet they give us optional gameplay. we can kill some anoying pesent if we want. Dose this afect the over all lore? no not realy. So the witcher is how do i say it...To stricked with what u can and cant do for a gameplay it has. it gives u wide open planes all sorts of missions and monsters.. but as far actualy optional gamplay. No. U cant kill some anoying basterd oh ur a good guy u cant kill pesents but u can kill guards? wtf and its story. it maybee good but the way it forces u down a narrow path its infuryateing for somone like me. so no i dont recomend it. and for the love of god it dosent disver that much freeking prase. U want a game that dose this gameplay right? Go buy The Elderscrolls games. if u dident already this isent even a shadow of what they are. Ultimately i have to agree with my girlfriend on saying this. U guys (by u guys i meen u fans) are everthing wrong with wticher. giveing it way more prase than it diserves. Over all gameplay is got vary few ♥♥♥♥ing options u cant even go find and explore buildings or tombs. like in TES.

(u can give me all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t u guys who love this game want i stand by my words).

This game is a love letter by CD Projekt RED to their fans. From the free dlc to their amazing expansions, everything about the Witcher 3 shows care and a level of quality that is rarely seen from a triple A developer. It's a must have for any fan of fantasy and RPGS.

TL;DR

Absolutely fantasticly good looking open world game with loads of story and great combat! Can't recommend it enough!

Get pulled right in

For somebody who normally hasn't been into any of the fantasy RPGs like Skyrim, Dragonage or Neverwinter Nights or the sorts, the first thing that draws you in immediately is the enormous amount of voice acted and animated scenes that are in this game. Something that has been developed over the years by CD Project Red has been turned into a near perfection. Mouth animations are made so that they sync with whatever language is spoken. Meaning that if you play the game with Polish voices, the lips sync with the words just as well, as it were in English or French. The conversarions that are held with any character, whether it's just a peasant of a small side quest, a merchant, or one of the major characters that Geralt meets, they are all fully voiced and animated.

This and the greatly optimised graphical engine the game is built in will have a great positive effect on the immersion into the game and your overall experience. Watching someone play, and mainly following the conversations and choises you as a player get to make here and there, made me want to get this game and play it for myself. And not only that, but even also made me want to get the previous two titles and play those first before even starting on this one!

The name is Geralt. Geralt of Rivia.

The game will make a player totally new to the universe of The Witcher feel right at home from the start. You will begin your adventure with (skippable) tutorials that will explain all the basics of combat in the game that you need to know and you will ease into the story right from the start. By playing the game and reading anything you pick up, you might get a good feeling of the setting and history of Geralt and the world he is moving in. However having played the previous two games first, it has helped me a great deal recognising characters and understanding the backstory of it all. Apart from the fact that certain choises that are made in the first game can be carried over the the second, and the same goes for the second into the third by importing a savegame.

If you're someone who just wants action and find the cut scenes fun, but don't want to read an aweful lot, you can perfectly fine play the game without reading much of it all, but you will lose on some of the context within the world though.

How about a few rounds of cards?

Just like in Witcher 1 and 2, this game also has a minigame that you can play against various characters you meet. Unlike the dice poker in the first two installments, that plays a bit like Yahtzee, The Witcher 3 has a whole different game: a collectible card game! This game alone can devour a lot of your playing hours alone! By winning from various characters in the game, and in the shops of various merchants, you will collect cards to build your 4 faction decks (5 with the Blood & Wine expansion). And it's amazingly good fun!

The game is easy and simple enough to learn quickly and engaging enough to keep playing! Each faction of the main game plays slightly differently by a unique few perks and an emphasis on certain abilities on the cards. The fith deck that comes with Blood & Wine expansion adds a couple very unique cards and abilities.

Butcher of Blaviken

Combat in The Witcher 3 feels very good. It has been built further on the mechanics from The Witcher 2 and makes you really feel in control of your combat. You dodge attacks by a sidestep or dodge-roll. You can simply block attacks or if you time it right, block at the right moment when the opponent attacks to make Geralt not only block the attack but also give a quick counter-attack that staggers the oponent for 2 seconds. This gives you the opportunity to dash some out yourself. Combat can be further 'specialised' or built upon by spending ability points that you earn by levelling up. Like being able to block arrows and bolts with your sword and even direct them back at the attacker.

Together with the Witcher Signs, a sort of light magic, combat in The Witcher 3 is both challenging (depending on your difficulty settings) and greatly satisfying to do.

Open world

Much more so than the previous two games, The Witcher 3 is quite large world filled to the brim with activities to do, from horse races and treasure hunts to picking up contracts from notice board and ridding the world of monster nests. Once you get past the initial area you can be potentially overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff to do within the game, when you start opening the map and glance over all the (undiscovered) locations. So much to see, so much to do!

DLC

Next to a bunch of extra free content (skins, some gear and quests) there are two expansions to this game: Hearts of Stone (HoS), and Blood & Wine (B&W). HoS adds a new story and quest line, some new weapon upgrades (enchantments) and adds new things to do in the north-east corner of the Novigrad map. B&W adds a completely new region with TONS of new stuff. Both worth the purchase!

There have been very few (single player) games for me that have had such an impact and so much entertainment value!

Easily one of the best RPGs ever made.

Geralt of Rivia's journey has been one with many great adventures - the civil war of the Scoia'tael against the Order of the flaming Rose, the impending threat of the Wild Hunt, the hunt for the Kingslayer - and it's now coming to a closure, as the Wild Hunt returns, seeking out the child from an old elven prophecy.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues the story of the previous parts, so my recommendation would be, to not play it without any knowledge about them.

Looking back to the first part of the Witcher, a lot has changed since then, most prominently of course, the graphics and now with part 3 a huge open world to explore by foot or on the back of your horse "Roach".
The combat system also got a slight upgrade compared to the second part and plays out smoother and more direct in my opinion.
They've swapped the mini-game from part 2 with a card game called "Gwent". If you get the hang out of it and like card games, this one can be pretty addictive. I loved it :)

Now, why do i think it's one of the best RPGs out there? Well, i guess it's the sum of everything.
The soundtrack is beautiful and underlines the atmosphere perfectly.
Graphical wise it's a blast and more than once i just stopped and admired the view.
The story itself is captivating, with a lot of interesting sidequests as well.
It has lots of interesting and lovable characters and i experienced the whole range of emotions throughout the game, from shock and sadness to bursting out in laughter.

I had the feeling that all the love, passion and commitment really showed and was transferred into the game and onto the screen.
I know, this is not the most objective thing to say, but that's how it felt :)

Anyway, i think the game and also CD Projekt RED deserves the praise, as they created a great series, with an awesome third installment.
The 2 big Add-Ons (i won't call them DLC, that would be a disgrace) are great as well and especially Blood & Wine is one of the best ones i played, adding another huge area, even more great characters, housing, a new Gwent faction and hours over hours of gameplay value.

Of course, a game of such proportions is never without issues and bugs, but fortunately, i never experienced anything major.
Sure, i had also some glitches and bugs or was stuck on a corner, not able to get onto Roach etc. but none of them couldn't be dealt with by saving and loading or restarting the game, so they were little annoyances and compared to the hours i've spent with the game, nothing of importance.

I also liked how CDPR made fun of the Roach-Bugs :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoL1NRh8JOI

So, if you like third-person Fantasy RPGs this should be a no-brainer for you ;)
I would recommend to also play the previous two games, even if the first one might be a little dated. In my opinion they are still more than worth it.

The Witcher 3は一つの完成系に到達していると断言できる。これほど密度の高いオープンワールドゲームを私は他に知らない。ゲームが、映画が好きだという方に是非プレイして頂きたい作品である。

There are on occasion certain convergences and synergies that give rise to human creations destined to transcend and expand the role and scope of art and storytelling. That's when these creations border on myth. What distinguishes them is that they are not exclusively the work of a single mastermind; instead they become collaborations that span across years, decades, and encompass the minds of several artists, writers, visionaries. Such is the Nietzschean mythology of DC/Marvel superheroes; such is the Darwinist mythology of Planet of the Apes; and such is the Slavic-Tolkienian saga of The Witcher.

My personal maxim when it comes to games is: Gameplay is king; Story is queen. I have little to no interest in games with no story or even lore; and also no interest in games with only story (I'd rather read a book in that case). The seamless combination of both is what interests me the most, and very few games achieve this blend as Wild Hunt has achieved. This game is the embodiment of the perfect balance between gameplay and story.

CDPR, the developer, has achieved the highest effect a game can have on its players: making them wish that it never ends. For the last five months I have delayed and put off the ending as long as I possibly could, wishing that this game could last forever; that I could play it for the rest of my life, always finding new side quests, new contracts, new treasure hunts. But alas, all great things must end; it's what makes them great. And in this case, The Witcher series ended on an incredibly high note. The fact that the developer has decided to conclude the story of Geralt with this game, instead of finding a way to milk the franchise also speaks volumes of their integrity as artists.

This is a game that is exuberantly alive: it bustles and teems with life. Walking through the woods, walking through a city, into a cave... you feel life around you, especially if you play with a good headset. The feeling of riding across the lands as the sun sets is something I'll never forget. I'd never played a game that felt so alive, so rich, so handcrafted in its minutest details. Some games came close, but probably due to limitations of technology and development cycle, they didn't achieve this level of liveliness and exuberance.

I usually don't like cutscenes in most games, to be very honest, but in this game I couldn't get enough of it. The voice acting, the character animation, especially facial animation, is beyond anything we've come to expect from games in terms of quality, and most games now pale in comparison, seeming lifeless and dull. No wonder some critics said that it "defines next-gen": this game is technically and artistically unparalleled, and it should set a gold standard to be aspired to by all AAA devs in the coming years. Not that most of them will ever achieve something this great, but they should at least aspire to greatness.

It has moments where its writing is at its best the fewer words are used: Geralt and Ciri trashing a certain place was particularly brilliant. But the writing here is among the best a game has ever seen. From my own personal preference, only the writing in Fallout: New Vegas could equal the writing in Wild Hunt. The variety of soundbites in cities and villages, the different personalities ascribed to vendors (a blacksmith mourning his son, an armourer who is not what he seems, a grumpy merchant, etc etc etc)... From the very first quests, the inner life shown by these characters is simply staggering: a lone hunter in the woods, a very minor character, who considers himself a freak, has more inner life than most protagonists in most games out there.

This brings us to the question of empathy. Here we feel such empathy for these characters, even as we know that they are nothing but a complex arrangement of ones and zeroes (technically speaking) and we feel for even the most despicable among them, such as the Bloody Baron. Only in TV series such as The Sopranos and Breaking Bad have I felt such empathy for men whom I would personally loathe if I ever came across them. This is top-notch writing in action. We care for the characters in such a way that it’s hard to hold back the tears at certain points in the story. The only complaint I have, as some others have as well, is that the main villains are not as developed as they could be: Imlerith and Eredin in particular could have been much more interesting, as even minor characters came out more interesting than them. Especially compared to Letho, the villain in Assassins of Kings, the villains here are very flat. It is a minor complaint, though, in the grand scheme of the game.

On to the gameplay. The investigation component, though not exactly innovative, is employed so deftly that it makes for one of the most satisfying elements in the game: finding clues and picking up scents is just fun and it makes you feel like a supernatural detective. I know some players had objections to the combat, but I have no complaints whatsoever. Especially on higher difficulties, it is clever, tactical, challenging and just plain fun. You don't have to mash your buttons or click your mouse to death here, instead you have to pace yourself, prepare for each fight, try to get the right oils and signs and bombs ready. It can be awkward sometimes, but that's a matter of skill. The better you become at combat, the more surgical and graceful you can become, which makes it extremely fun and satisfying.

As an RPG, well, purists may argue that The Witcher series in general is not a true RPG because you will always be Geralt of Rivia: you will always be bound and limited by his personality, skills and fighting style. Yes, true enough. But within these bounds there is a freedom to build a character that is unique, not only in the dialogue choices that ultimately impact the story, but in the way you approach the world and what you do with it.

In terms of mechanics, I have had no problems whatsoever. Not a single crash, only some very minor and mildly amusing glitches. As I said before, this game is technically unparalleled. CDPR's engine is the perfect expression of Clarke's third law: advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Apart from some shoddy textures here and there, the game is truly magical in its beauty and scope. It is an open world without invisible walls, where the sky and the oceans are the limits.

The soundtrack is a work of art in itself. For the past two months I've started reading the books while listening to the soundtrack, and it makes for a very satisfying combination. It fills you with longing and transports you to the world of the Witcher while your body sits there in the bus, going to work or wherever. It is that good, seriously.

Flawed as only the greatest masterpieces can be, Wild Hunt is a tour de force to be reckoned with. It is a world built by some of the most creative and innovative minds in the games industry; it is a game carved and handcrafted as a labour of love with only the varnish of commercial value. Wild Hunt redeems the videogame medium; it elevates art and storytelling to a whole new level that we can only hope will come to be imitated, however imperfectly.

The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt

What is that for a game !?! The best RPG game ?!? With a great and long story ?!? An exciting and sad story ?!?

YES , IT IS

This game is just so awesome . Incredible story , great graphics , great atmosphere , great DLC , long playtime !
I bought the game at first on GOG and played it there 100% ,but then I wanted it on steam and bought it there and play it again ,because the story was and is so awesome . Can't wait for the last DLC (Blood and Wine) this month .

Story
ONE WORD ! AWESOME ! The main thing in the story is to find "Ciri". So the story of The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt goes into your own hearth in some scenes . You have to choose one thing in a certain time and when you choose the bad thing sometimes then you have a bad end in the main story . One scene was really sad ,but I won't spoiler it . You will see.
Long story , great story 1000/10 points !

Graphics
You will see it ... Wait a second ..... There is it.....

This game is simply the best game ever made in the history of video gaming industry. It takes around 50-80 hours just to complete the main questline, the side quests with epic lore and much more made the game even better. Then the DLC blew me away even more with mysterious ending. I can 't wait for Blood and Wine because i know that CDPR will do a great job. Game that could be compared with Witcher 3 doesen 't exist. Overall 10/10, worth every cent!

Simply one of the best RPGs ever made.

Pros:
  • Gorgeous graphics engines, with an extremely tweakable graphics settings menu. Breathtaking landscapes, excellently modeled characters and monsters. This game looks fantastic, especially if you have a powerful rig.
  • Great combat system, deep customization and a plethora of unique consumable items lets you tailor your abilities and actions to your playstyle.
  • Controls are precise and responsive.
  • Wonderful, immersive storyline. Even some side quests felt like their own adventures.
  • Characters are intelligently written, and brilliantly voice acted.
  • Massive world.
  • Multiple endings, new game+, engaging difficulty modes creates high replayability.
  • Unafriad to tackle difficult themes, presenting you with choices and consequences that are complex and difficult. Instead of the usual: "Are you a good guy, or bad guy?"
  • Expansion Packs:
    • Hearts of Stone: Amazing. Absolutely pick this up. I might actually like this story better than the main campain. It's close. Well worth the money.
    • Blood and Wine: At the time of writing this, blood and wine is not currently out. I will update my review once I beat it.

Neutral:
  • Lots of repeated side content: Monster lairs, bandit camps, hidden treasure, smuggler's caches.

Cons:
  • Can be a bit fetch quest heavy at times.
  • Occassional bugs can disrupt your experience. Though it seems most of them have been ironed out over the last couple patches.

This final installment in the witcher series is not only rich in adult fantasy but brimming to the edge with wonderfully fleshed out characters, stories, and adventures. Even the most out of the way side quest is like finding a diamond. I've never had so much fun exploring and oh there is so much to explore in this open world.

The combat takes a bit of getting used to but once you've learned the mechanics its fun to fight and try out different attack strategies depending on your current adversary.

Finally, I hope you have a decent videocard because thisgame is beautiful and would be a shame to experience in anything below high settings.

This is a must own. 10/10.

With the main story line taking around 55 hours to complete (without ANY side story) this game takes my breath away as a modern marvel of gaming history. To spare the extended review i would usually give, to get to the point, this game shows imaculent optimization, beautiful story, and extremely deep characters that you end up almost crying over. Ill admit, this game took me a few hours to get in to, as in the beginnning i felt like i was running all over the place, however, despite that, I became attached to Geralt and Ciri.

Visually the game is stunning, the animations, the character models, they all look so amazing. Along with the beautiful models, the voice acting... the voice acting! it is so good, at times i laughed so hard, and at other times i felt the need to cry. Johnny for example, a little godling you find in novigrad; you first talk to him to find ciri, and he tells you how he took a huge dump right as the sun was rising. Diverse is the word i would say to describe the characters in Witcher 3.

The game has a lot of content NOT for children and i would advise ONLY 17+ TO PLAY. There are countless sex scenes and intense profanity that may not be suitable for all ages. Although the profanity seems almost more immersive, as it gives characters their personality at times, there are even times when you would meet a 10 year old and they would be talking about how they saw a woman with huge tata's (they dont neccesarily say it that way). If you are a parent of a child who loves story and adventure, this game is TONS of excitment, however, as a parent, you might want to play over the game yourself to see the content that you would allow your child to see.

The RPG elements are found greatly in that there is crafting, alchemy, fist fights with random npc's, contant quests (side story as well as main story), hunting contracts, and more. In many games, i find myself skipping all the dialogue and backround, but in Witcher 3, as i collected diarys, informationaly books, and logs, i found myself often reading them to get more immersed into the world of Witcher 3.

As a final note, i would recommend this game to anyone over 17 or 18 because of the mature elements involved *some are skippable, like dialogue, but if you reach a sex scene, it is a bit harder* but i recommend it as one of the best story-rich RPG's out there. As a PC player, i rarely find myself spending more than 25 dollars on a game, but this game is 100% worth the price. The story is amazing, the characters are so richly invested in, and the overall experience is mesmerizing. Everyone needs to try this beautiful game, and i hope you take my review with a grain of salt because after all, my taste is different than other people in the community. Have a great day, and HAVE FUN!

A masterwork of video game storytelling, great world design, fun combat, and it's just overall incredibly memorable and it very literally NEVER ENDS... even when you beat the main story, you will no doubt still have so much left to do including the expansions.

For some it very likely won't click due to the various systems in place: character progression and the loot.
Honestly, if you go into this with the mindset that it bombards you with skills and phat loot every half hour then you're going to be incredibly disappointed because those might the game's weakest points.

The loot system is a joke and total after thought, clearly added to appease people that love rummaging through every container and chest they see but without realizing that those people need good items every so often and especially for chests that are usually at the end of quest chains. But, I can't even add this as a negative because I stopped caring about loot once I got really into the crafting system as that's where your best items are! So, really, dispel with the notion of this being a loot-a-thon almost immediately or else you're only going to disappoint yourself.

Character progression is a mixed bag for me, I don't pay too much attention to it as the skills are all pretty much fine out of the gate and they'll get buffed from items and runes anyways. The most you want to do is invest in the alchemy tree, really and pop a few points into your preferred signs.

Otherwise, again, dispel any notions you have about levelling up quickly and getting SICK SKILLS every 20 minutes. You get the brunt of your XP from doing quests and contracts, usually helps if said quests or contracts are a level higher than you or the same level as you because otherwise you get jack for XP, especially if it's for doing things that are under your level. The highest amount of XP I think I've ever gotten for killing a random beastie in the wild was about 33 or so, so yeah... don't waste your time killing monsters without a contract that's your level or better.

Those aren't exactly negatives on my end, I'm just laying them out there as a warning to people thinking of getting into the game with the wrong idea about its systems.

Anyways, just about every quest and contract has an interesting little story to tell so absolutely do them eventually when you've stopped caring about just doing them for money or XP. This is the rare completely handcrafted RPG with no randomly generated quests, so you know every one you take will give you a little adventure!

Combat is visceral and satisfying, possibly gets a bit simplistic after a certain period of getting acclimated with it but that never bothered me because, again, it's just so FUN and SATISFYING... especially when you cleave a beastie in half!

The world design is phenomenal with so much detail and love put into every nook and cranny, exploration is greatly rewarded...(just not with very good loot usually[there is the very rare exception however that you might find diagrams you need], to hammer that point home), you get rewarded with well written lore and absolutely beautiful sights.
I love the creature design as well, these are beasts that are animated so well that I'd half expect to see the developers mo-capping actual monsters in any making ofs.

This is easily the best video game I have ever played and will likely KEEP playing for the forseeable future, it's just so easy to get lost in its world and fall in love with its characters. This game made me a fan of the franchise and developer for life.

Highly HIGHLY recommend it, especially for fans of story telling.

Welp, onto the expansions. See you in another 100 hours probably.

I am quite sure that this is the best game I played in recent two years. It should be the best RPG and I strengthened my faith when double DLCs issued. I\'ve spend lots of time in it, really enjoyable and funny.
Thank you, Geralt of Rivia; Thanks, CD Project Red.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues the novel-to-video-game adaptation of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher Saga. This latest entry in the series concludes the tale of witcher Geralt of Rivia by following his quest to track down his adopted daughter Ciri. She is being chased by the mysterious and evil "Wild Hunt". While previous Witcher games featured a more linear level structure, The Witcher 3 is the first to introduce a completely open world that is described by the developers as 20 percent larger than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Geralt is a Witcher, a spellsword trained and mutated from childhood to become a near-superhuman monster slayer. The game’s prologue finds him in search of the two most important people in his life: his lover, Yennefer, and his adopted daughter, Ciri. For different reasons, both are being pursued by a terrifying supernatural force known as the Wild Hunt. Like a lot of things in life, this game is much more about the journey than the destination. Geralt’s journey sees him make his way through three huge, distinct, and open areas of the Northern Kingdoms and their surrounds. Roman Empire analogue Nilfgaard is on the brink of completing a crushing invasion of them, but begins the game in a temporary stalemate against the last two of these kingdoms, united under the banner of the stern king Radovid V.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expects and rewards preparation above all else. Anybody who plays it like an Assassin’s Creed title or other action game will find themselves reloading frequently — I should know, because that’s how I initially approached it. Mashing attack might kill a few stray dogs, but that’s about it, as I found out. Side quests are all but mandatory, as enemies do not scale to the player’s level. It’s one among many ways that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt makes you feel like one man in a very large world. That’s one of the things I really appreciated about the game. The tutorial, if enabled, will nudge you once or twice, but afterwards will leave you with plenty of rope with which you are free to hang yourself with. Multiple save files are a must for this reason.

The game’s soundtrack was generally fairly restrained, but battle seemed to bring out the silly side of it. Each time the chorus of wailing warrior women got started, I felt like Geralt and I had stepped into an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. In a way, that’s an apt comparison. As Geralt slashes, pirouettes and leaps through skirmishes, I can’t help but think of Xena, beloved in part for its occasionally slapstick choreography.

Combat is both challenging and rewarding. Experimentation is again, encouraged: I found that one of Geralt’s signs, minor spells that Witchers cast, was able to knock men from horses. From there, Geralt was able to execute the grounded fighters without a struggle. I realised that a similar technique could be applied to flying enemies, and cursed myself for having not thought of it earlier. It wasn’t too long ago that I had been fighting a griffin, after all.

Signs, swordplay, bombs, potions and oils are Geralt’s main tools in combat, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s crafting ensures that you’ll be making the majority of them yourselves. Weapons and armor both degrade over time, and require repair in order to function properly. For a small fee, craftsmen can also take materials provided and upgrade Geralt’s current gear or craft entirely new items for him. You’ll find yourself spending a lot of time in the company of blacksmiths, so why not challenge a few to some cards?

That’s where Gwent, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s amazing minigame, comes in. Gwent has its roots in games like Goofspiel, being a simple game to learn but a complex one to master. Supposedly an analogue for how a battle unfolds, Gwent sees players placing numbered cards across three different zones. The first player to have the highest numbers on their side of the board for two rounds wins. It’s not as crucial a part of the game as Triple Triad was for Final Fantasy VIII, but it was compelling enough that I had to force myself away from it, lest this turn into Gwent: A Review.

Load times are disguised by short recaps of relevant main quests, matched to panning images like the one above. Unless you’re re-loading a save or just opening the game, you won’t actually see them often at all. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt really is an open world. Gone are the days of plotting where to base your Skyrim life to minimize loading transitions: if you see something in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you can usually walk up to or inside of it.

On the presentation and visual side, The Witcher 3 delivers one of the more engrossing and atmospheric game worlds seen in awhile. From trees waving in the wind to waist-deep swamps, everything about the game's visuals create a world that effortlessly combines real-world beauty with fantasy and medieval themes. The game world is presented in such a way that each territory, and the people that reside in its cities, are unique in their views on the current war, not to mention differences in their clothing and armor. Larger cities feature shady characters walking about streets and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s on corners promoting brothels, while a smaller, more controlled city only contains nobles and streets that are well maintained. While there is a fast travel system, it's far more enjoyable and atmospheric to use Geralt's horse Roach, or to sail across rivers and oceans in a boat.

There’s a whole bunch of blacksmithing and alchemy plans to uncover and put to use as well. The world is chockful of components, particularly on the alchemy side, where the general wilderness seems to hold plants to collect every few 10 yards or so. It can get a bit overwhelming early on, but you’ll quickly learn that it’s not necessary to use or craft every potion or oil in the game, as you slowly mold your alchemy use to something that benefits your particularly playstyle. Crafting armor and weapons is fairly easy to do, but I found plans and competent crafters were a bit hard to come by.

The side contracts are where the game really shines. Where other open world fantasy games would treat bulletin board quests as a chance to make players gather ten bear butts through text only prompts, these can be just as nuanced as the main story chapters, with interesting twists on straightforward setups forcing the player to make the call as to who the real monster is. Even incidental missions and collectables filling up the map, while appearing too much like Ubisoft at first blush, manage to have something of a narrative seed embedded within. Treasure hunts often have examples of environmental storytelling and letters, and roadside encounters can lead to more complicated missions later on.

Story-wise, The Witcher 3 does an admirable job of giving new players enough information for them to understand the world in which they live, while also providing plenty of bonuses for long-time fans of the series. While some elements of the narrative are left vague for quite a while - what's the deal with the Wild Hunt, exactly? - you'll usually be too busy dealing with the dark, gritty, interesting world around you to worry about the bigger questions.

It’s hard to not spend all day singing The Witcher 3’s praises, but it really is a special kind of game. One that reminds you of how games can be engrossing experiences, ones you want to share with your friends, filled with moments that make you laugh, cry and sing along to a sweet ballad about the white wolf and the sorceress.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ends Geralt’s tale in spectacular fashion, finding ways to fill a giant world with thrilling combat, beautiful sights, and a bevy of compelling content. A strong conclusion to The Witcher trilogy, and a masterpiece that will keep you enthralled for weeks and months to come.
