Don't we all , but you do realize that was a live action trailer

This post was stupid when it was originally made shortly after the live action Halo 5 trailers were released. I think OP back then legitimately thought it was CGI.

The fact that someone reposted this 15 months later is even worse.

The better quote should be "Look at all the mature tones in the story that we didn't get".

Screw Halo 5's story. The advertising built up hype for this great and interesting mystery where Master Chief was doing seriously questionable things for unknown reasons. They even had that whole Hunt the Truth podcast series where the entire world received footage of him shooting up a human-alien embassy.

But in the game he goes somewhere when he's told not to, oh no.

halo 5 was a huge letdown. they just now added casual for fun games like infection and grifball. im scared of what they are going to do with this next game. if the campaign gets worse it wont be fun at all, the story is what drives you to keep playing halo games but 5 just didnt have a decent one. i mean like 3 whole missions are you just talking to people and i was hype for arbiter but he barely does anything. maybe 1 mission and some dialigue. 4s story was okay, everyone wanted to save cortana, but now shes evil? idk what they are doing but i hope it works out.

Cortana being evil is the best part about it. She is trying to Dave herself fr death and she won't let anything stop her from her goal. Now all of the other smart A.I.s are joining her so they can prevent their own deaths.

I'm excited to see what comes next in terms of that piece of the story....though a part of me wish she would have stayed dead after 4. Maybe give chief a new Cortana like she suggested...it would've been cool to see him try to deal with someone who is both a stranger and familiar.

They advertised the game as having so many more missions to make it sound long, but some missions had 30 seconds of player control.

I'm not a fan of Halo 5 but that's untrue. The 15 missions in Halo 5 all had decent lengthy playable sections. The problem wasn't the gameplay, it was the cutscenes and the story.

Missions 8 and 10 (I think) were literally "find Palmer, find Halsey".

Still, 13 missions beats 8 every time.

[–]King_of_the_G1ngers 3ポイント4ポイント  (4子コメント)

Also don't forget about the dumb sea-legs level finales where you're literally just trying to keep your character from tripping and face-planting again. Literally the climax of the game is just pushing your joystick to keep Locke moving forward.

To me, Halo died when Bungie stopped developing the games. The games just don't feel like Halo anymore.

I didn't even realize that this was the case. When did Bungie stop developing Halo? 3?

Reach was their last Halo game.

last halo game i played sold Xbox after that.

Really? Bungie's new baby is destiny and even thought it started rocky it ended up very good.

Yeah it was pretty shit to begin. Apparently it started to get good just as I stopped playing it.

343 really dropped the ball. They turned me into a PC gamer with Halo 4.

What was wrong with halo 4? It was a great game.

Poor art style, poor writing (especially in Spartan ops), reduced custom game features, small or boring forge maps, and at launch the maps were so so. If you played small gametypes, it was almost always that stupid arena map. If it was larger, then it would be that greener map in the canyon. In general, it just didn't feel like the Halo I had come to know and love.

Spartan ops was shit but I found the campaign to be decently written. I see the "it didn't feel like Halo" argument a lot and that's fair enough I suppose, but if it had been just like the Bungie games then people would have complained that it was too much like the old Halo and nothing changed. A little innovation is good in my opinion, otherwise things get stale.

Would they really complain? I wouldn't mind another Bungie Halo instead of the melodramatic, COD-esque game we did get.

Halo 4 : Backtrack to Hide Lack Of Content Wars

I like your argument a lot. I think the new halo is fun but flawed. I like the new mixed in with the old gameplay wise and dont really understand when people say it doesn't feel like halo.

In that same boat man. Built my own rig now I'll never be going back. The let down is real.

Pretty much the only game I played on my Xbox was Halo:CE and Halo 2. I bought the 360 mainly for Halo 3, got ODST and Reach as well.

Halo 4 was kind of a let down. It just didn't feel like a Halo game at all. I mean it was an alright game on its own, but compared to Halo 3 it was pretty average.

The halo 5 war zone was the best thing added to a halo game since halo 3, yes the campaign was a little sloppy, but most people are buying halo games for the multiplayer and then the campaign is secondary, they did a great job with the multiplayer and to complain about the direction of the story when you don't even know where it's heading yet is a little ridiculous.

There are other routes that they could have gone down for story, but 343i are just lazy fucks that copy plots and gameplay troupes.

I could forgive the shitty story and limited matchmaking if they didn't completely fuck up the controls

In a world where it's criminal to put shit on your private server, to be fair he would have been absolutely dishonourably discharged... which should have happened to him on the UNSC Infinity in Halo 4.

[–]I_want_to_eat_it 7ポイント8ポイント  (1子コメント)

He's a spartan, the UNSC practically consider him more military hardware than soldier.

True, but I assume he still has roughly the same rights as a human. He'd have to give up Cortana and the armour though.

[–]Jinno 0

Being the face of humanity's survival in the Covenant war buys you some insubordination privileges.

Not enough to not have your girlfriend not be torn apart by a scrapper apparently.

[–]Jinno 2

If the actual story had been written anywhere near as well as Hunt the Truth, H5 would have been a GOTY contender. Instead it was just a few hours of engaging fun, but with mediocre storytelling.

*Hunt the Truth :)

[–]I_want_to_eat_it 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Fixed, thanks. It was a fun to listen to while gaming. Shame it turned out completely non-cannon, since it was far more interesting and suspenseful than Halo 5 turned out to be.

Did they announce that it's non-canon? I didn't think that this was the case.

It might as well be non-canon because next to nothing that appeared in Hunt The Truth ended up meaning anything in the actual game, even though it was supposed to be a lead up to it.

[–]dragonslayer_perseus 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Do you have a link to this podcast? Sounds pretty cool

Honestly just book the next week off work, stock up on food and Google "Hunt the Truth". You're in for many hours of cool stuff.

Here you go you can either listen to the individual episodes or the super cuts for each season which are a couple hours each.

they were so awesome to listen to as they were coming out, definitely worth checking out.

hunt the truth was still awesome, although we learned what that whole embassy thing really was, and from the beginning of 5 it was probably one of the many missions he did after 4

I think OP back then legitimately thought it was CGI.

I mean it is CGI. I just saw it, easily 90% of the trailer is CGI. Most tv and movies are shot in front of a green screen nowadays

I don't understand how people thought this wasn't live action, not only is it tradition for Halo to do live action trailers but this in particular even has behind the scenes videos of the actors and artists on set.

live action trailers but this in particular even has behind the scenes videos of the actors and artists on set.

Doesn't always mean live-action. ;)

That's really well made! Thought it was simply a tech demo at first but turned out to be 12 minutes worth of golden comedy! Thanks!

I watched it just now for the first time with knowing that it was live action. Honestly I couldve sworn its not live action

I'm glad someone told OP, what an awful choice for the image.

I worked in advertising on many high profile video game commercials. The brief was always very explicit: make a trailer for the game that looks incredible and will trick people into thinking this is the actual product.

Many live action trailers go to great lengths to trick viewers into thinking it's in-game, and it's intentional. Also, Joe Public often doesn't even know what "live action" means.

A cursory glance over the comments for many live action trailers will show you that the trick is working, since there are often many comments about how amazing the "graphics" are.

You mean to tell me that halo 5 wasn't a live action video game?!?! THATS SOME BULLSHIT

I donno man I mean Maria Ozawa

Counter argument to the whole games don't look as good as their E3 reveal Doom 2016

I seem to remember that ID remade the whole rendering engine within the game engine between that and release (maybe earlier?), hence why the game looks so fucking good. Huge kudos to the magicians at ID for pulling that out of the bag.

I believe that was between the Quakecon and E3 reveal.

I'd say the Killzone franchise has been pretty good at delivering what they promise, nobody thought they were gonna be able to get KZ2 to look as good as the E3 trailer on release but it did same as KZ3 from I can remember

Remember how upset people were getting thst DOOM was green. It turned out nicely IMO.

what game? sigh

The New Doom sorry I'll edit my post to prevent further occurrences of this question

Huh So that's the Thing Epic has been working on?

Yup. It's gorgeous. And pretty fun for a MOBA, which I've never been a fan of.

I'll have to give it a look-see

I think it's f2p on Tuesday.

I dont even know if my pc can even run this??

That was alive action trailer.

Didn't the trailers for Team Fortress 2 look exactly how the game looked?

One of the exceptions.

Yes, and this is why stylized graphics will always be better IMO. Sure, uncharted looks good now, but in a few years, it'll be outshined by almost everything because we'll be able to emulate realistic graphics better. Games like TF2, Super Mario Sunshine, and other games of the sort look good to this day, and will look good for another while at least.

Super Mario Sunshine looks amazing in dolphin at high resolutions

question, i tried playing this on dolphin and couldnt figure out a way to get the water gun to work right. i couldnt use it without stopping and aiming. howd you get it to work?

[–]unoriginal_stuff 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

But will the games be actually enjoyable? I can still load back some of the snes games and enjoy it.

But that TF2 project got cancelled, and the Team Fortress 2 as we know it was started. The clip you showed was using the original team fortress game and was modded to be more "realistic" to be along the lines of CS.

I guess Valve realised they needed to take TF2 away from CS, I don't know if CS was their own project then, or just a community mod for HL.

cs was just a mod at that time

Damn I wish I got to play this version of TF2 so much

And Quantum Break (which was console exclusive)

Do people not realize trailers are just ads and every single ad about anything ever trys to make it self seem better than it is.....

nah op probably still thinks lynx/axe will make hot women just instantly fall in love with you straight away and that some cars can turn into robots.

I think the problem is the word "trailer." Trailer should mean actual footage like in movies, otherwise it's a promotional video.

Movies trailers frequently show snippets that didn't make the final cut. It's not exclusive to games.

Which is why i don't watch trailers. I don't like ads.

I'll just wait for some game play video to be released to figure out if I want it. And typically that is done by some random youtube reviewer because the manufacturers rarely release game play video.

Tell me about Uncharted 4.

And Battlefront.

Everyone knows that Stardew Valley has the best graphics!

And a higher metascore!

And just about any game made by Nintendo... Oh wait... nevermind.

Not sure where you are getting this. Pretty sure battlefront didn't receive a downgrade. Still looks just as good as the trailers.

Looks great but still only runs at 30fps.

Wait what? It really doesn't feel like it. I'm playing it right now and it feels smooth as hell, but it does make my PS4 sound like a fucking rocket engine.

The game uses some sort of special motion blur that isn't garbage and it makes the game feel smoother than it actually is

The AA in it is also amazing. In the past 3 Uncharteds the aliasing was super prevalent but U4 looks astounding.

multiplayer is 60 fps

singleplayer is 30

digitalfoundry has some fancy videos on it

it's one of the smoothest 30 fps games on the console (considering the graphics) ever

Yeah, it really impressed me. I'm a PC gamer first and foremost but I bought a PS4 because I'm a huge fan of their exclusives (especially The Last of Us) but I was surprised when I learned that Uncharted wasn't 60 FPS after playing through the first few chapters. One of the best looking games I've ever played, kudos to the devs for squeezing the power they did out of the PS4.

Play a few hours of multiplayer (it runs at 60fps) then jump into single player (30fps). Turn the camera around and you should notice the difference.

When hopping around between games at 60 then jumping onto a game that's 30, it feels to me like the game is stuttering for about 30 minutes until I adjust.

There's nothing wrong with a 30fps game when the frametime is at a rock solid 33ms.

When it goes all over the place but still averages out at 30 that sucks big time.

Sure 60 and even 144 are better, but 30 for Uncharted is perfectly fine, even more so when it's absolutely rock solid.

I genuinely didn't notice until I played the 60fps multiplayerm. ND made a fantastic game!

Destiny is gorgeous and runs at 30fps, one of the smoothest games I've played.

Doom looks better than the E3 footage. Also not locked to 30 fps.

And GTA! Rockstar doesn't mess around!

No different then a Subway commercial. Honestly the difference between the advertised subs and what you actually get should be considered false advertising

This is an interesting overview of the topic: https://youtu.be/xNter0oEYxc

Not sure why this was downvoted

Cause the reality hurts

It's been pretty widely reposted. It makes an okay point (aside from comparing PC to console footage), but nothing all that revelatory.

Treat all promos as a best-case scenario, and if you're not playing it on a high end rig - adjust accordingly.

That dude makes some quality vids :)

I'll be honest, after my xbone purchase I've been completely happy with the graphics. Obviously they're not as good as a gaming pc, but games like Shadow of Mordor and Battlefront still are pretty visually stunning

This was a live action trailer though?

Most if not all trailers for games will not be a true reflection of the in game graphics. Rarely, but sometimes you'll see trailers state that the trailer is gameplay from the actual game. You'll see Battlefield do that often.

"We ran the demo on two 980 TIs, it's totally in-game footage though."

"Yeah sure we pre-rendered the whole thing at miles above the highest graphics possible and pumped it out at 8k resolution but still comon guys this is it"

every ubisoft trailer, and presentation.

What really gets me with Ubisoft is they present a decent amount of fairly polished looking gameplay. I can forgive games when they only give a tiny glimpse of obvious placeholder systems, change is to be very expected. Ubi has a habit of making it look fairly obvious they're at a certain point in development where wholesale downgrades in gfx and the world are completely unacceptable.

This is inspired by that video about ubisofts downgrade in graphics. Should check that out if interested.

Dark Souls 2... Never forget.

I forgot - What happened with Dark Souls 2?

They had a lot of lighting elements which were a core dynamic of the game. They were removed before release, presumably because ps3/360 couldn't handle them.

Stop buying this shit when they do this.

I'm still salty that none of the Halo 2 gameplay reveal trailer made it into the actual game.

The way I feel about game trailers is: LOOK AT ALL THE GRAPHICS THAT WE COULD HAVE IF CONSOLES WERE NOT HOLDING US BACK!

TIL OP doesnt know what Live Action means

CG trailers are about as useful as the buzzwords under their description.

Show me the game in action please.

PLease you can't even trust the gameplays anymore. look at the famous ubisoft video showing the downgrades.

8 years ago called

Wans't that a live action trailer?

Just like fast food commercials. It still tastes fine, but looks like it was made in 2005.

Did anyone else think Deus Ex HR in game looked better than the first trailer for it?

This is meta as fuck

If you don't want shitty, downgraded graphics, don't buy a console. I own a ps4, and use it as much as my PC, but when I want quality graphics/performance, I buy a game on PC

People are using this post to shit-talk consoles, but Nintendo and Naughty Dog, probably the two biggest names in console exclusivity, don't do this.
It's largely the four horsemen of the multiplatform apocalypse that do: EA, Ubi, Activision, Square-Enix.
So does Bethesda, King of You-Should-Really-Play-That-On-PC. Making fun of their open world engine is old hat by this point, but their advertisements for Skyrim had this, too.

EA definitely does not do this. Especially with games running Frostbite.

Graphics. The only measurement of a great game

False advertising. the one that should matter.

To be fair, most of the videos showing better graphics are revealed far in advance of the game's release. Games look great at E3 then two years later we get to see how the game really looks.

The first video is to show the artistic vision, if you buy into that you are a sucker. Most games now have a long run up, with plenty of media copies as well as betas to show how the final product will look. Far from false advertising.

"These graphics created on a console, in the game engine!" high end computer literally setting on a PS4 in the devs office, running a newer version of the engine

Witcher III was so guilty of this, pre footage was so good it made me perk up and pay attention to the series, thought about getting into it until it was released with mediocre (by comparison) graphics.

Except for anything made by naughty dog.

What about nintendo?

This trailer is awesome but was very misleading in regards to Halo 5's campaign. 343 FIX STORY FOR HALO 6 PLZ.

Just watch gameplay trailers. End of story.

At some point I started to judge games based on their trailers. If I don't see gameplay I likely won't enjoy the game very much.

Game trailers don't even show gameplay anymore, so what difference does it make?

Doom definitely delivered.

I was more bothered about the plot that completely missed the launch.

I mean... they are essentially as bad as movie trailers

People dont seem torealize that there is ahuge runtime difference between cinematics and actual player controlled graphics such as characters, gunfire, spells etc... cinematics dont have to be dynamic and are in general much less complex because everything is predetermined to one course of action where as the actual game is filled to the brim with variables and conditions so the graphics have to be brought down for the game to run with a smooth fps, or in some cases, so the game can even run at all. Especially with the restrictive hardware and software in current consoles

I think, look at these graphics, that's so not going to run on my pc

[–]Yo_Is_This_Real_Life 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Especially any cinematics by Blur Studios.

Dark Souls 2 :'(

I remember back when almost every game debuted with a pre-rendered/non-gameplay trailer. That was also before nearly every game with a large level size wasn't slammed with a mini-scandal over how the graphics were so much better in the trailers that only loaded a small chunk of the level. Gameplay trailers are something of an implicit promise to the consumer, and demanding people make promises before they're ready is a really bad idea.

"But it was made in the same engine bro!"

-my friend on the new Battlefield.

Every Diablo game ever made...ever warrant game ever made most games ever made its a giant pain

Why would you feel like that? Example?

World of Warcraft's trailers are especially egregious. Actually, most of Blizzards are after their heyday of Diablo 2, Starcraft 1, Warcraft.

Regarding the actual picture "look at all these false advertisements about the plot"

The shameful bit is that companies know the capabilities of consoles the moment they start developing for them. It's a little more forgivable when we're talking about PCs because they're trying to hit a moving target with the constant evolution of PCs.

I think this applies less to console trailers, more specifically to Ubisoft trailers.

However the screenshot was live action so not the best example in the world, however I do see that's where the joke was coming from too.

Right? It should be like, a law to at least have a certain percentage of ACTUAL gameplay footage in a commercial. Oh well, that's what Youtube is for.

Here's a neat trick to figure out the trailer footage:

  • watch the trailer closely
  • first, focus on the gameplay
  • disregard the graphics completely on the first watch
  • afterwards don't watch the trailer again because the graphics shouldn't have been that important to you in the first place

Also: if you wait for a game to be released you can watch actual ingame footage.

Funny that you posted this today, last night I watched a video comparing Ubisofts pre-release trailers and game footage to the footage of the final product. Its really amazing how different the game is by the time it comes out.

Link for the interested. https://youtu.be/xNter0oEYxc

Sometimes I just want to watch the movie version of it and then realise there is no movie

Battlefield 1942 all the way to battlefield 1. Most if not all have been full game play trailers. I've always loved that about their games.

The Forza franchise uses the game engine to produce all of their commercial/trailer footage.

What do you know about caravans?

I thought you meant a trailer full of consoles that you could rent for a week or something. With 4k displays or some shit.
Cause that would be awesome.

At least they're not like the second Twilight Princess trailer, where the whole game wasn't in the game. :(

Except for the witcher... theirs ended up better.
