What do the mods think of a weekly badcharts thread? Or general low hanging fruit thread? The pro of this is cutting down on some of the chart spam (I'm referring to that authoritarian <-> libertarian, left <-> right graph). On the other hand, this sub is already fairly low on users so it might just further restrict content.

Anyone else having more and more trouble discussing politics in everyday life?

I feel that the polarization of the current campaign in the US has had some significant effects on individual discourse, if you'll excuse that fantastic understatement.

A few things:

  1. Adamant supporters of a given candidate are polarizing to the point that real discussion is becoming difficult. I don't mean this in a Horseshit Theory way, I mean to say that people are becoming extremely defensive because of everything surrounding the race.

  2. The vitriol pushes the normally apathetic/not too invested even further away from any sort of discourse. These people now want nothing to do with anything involving politics.

  3. Anyone that is outside of the normal Box-O-Debate nonetheless gets automatically assigned a label from the box. Meaning that I (as a socialist) have to constantly add so many asterisks to everything I say that there's no real chance of me getting my actual point across. Plus, it means that whenever we (though, this also applies to centrists and moderates) point out something wrong with one of the candidates or any one of the myriad of policies they propose, it means we're automatically attacking them. So then we find ourselves back at step one.

I guess that I just don't remember '08 and '12 being this damaging to individual discourse. Yeah, the major news networks were always shit, but I remember being able to actually have a conversation. That doesn't much seem to happen any more.
