Do you think Memphis can play RW? (self.reddevils)

I've seen alot of talk about the need for us to sign a right winger. Ronaldo as I remember in his peak Manchester United career played predominantly on the RW because of Giggs and Nani on the left side. He still managed to work it well and got plenty of assists over goals.

Memphis as we know has got great skill, pace and physicalness and could provide a job on the right, especially due to his great ability to whip the ball in with accuracy and pace. Also with him being a young play can adapt and mould his style of play to suit the teams need.

Thoughts?

I think he has the skills to, just a question as to whether he adapts mentally. I actually didn't think Martial looked that bad on the right, though he was pretty dominant on the left. Either way, if Zlatan joins, he would have to to get on the field.

I get downvoted to hell every time I say that Martial played pretty well when put on the right. Although I obviously prefer him on the left. If he has to play on the right he can do it, and do it well.

It's basically when at this point for Zlatan. He wants to continue at a high level, and we are basically the next big club he can go to, with the added factor of Mourinho.

Not really, it doesn't suit his playstyle, he's all about crossing from deep and taking lots of shots

Why does that stop him doing it from the right? It allows him to cross even deeper and can still take shots, but not cutting inside.

His specialty is in inswinging crosses and he can't cut in and shoot with his right which is a large part of his game too.

It's not impossible for him to play there but he'd have to play a different game

At PSV he played on either side on a target man. Most often from the left, but was still effective on the right. Little dinks and give-n-goes were very common (even into preseason his connection with Rooney on the American tour was so hope-filled); and at the end of the day Memphis is a confidence player who lost some of that. Be that through the staff or his performances I don't know, but it most definitely can be turned around.

Slow build up play and the predictability of Memphis coming back inside is part of what hindered his game this past season. That's on both the player and the tactics. Playing the ball in behind or up to Zlatan and letting the wide men break will be a breathe of fresh air and, IMO, unleash Memphis.

Martial deserves a run at CF, too. So there will be times when Memphis can come back on the right. But I firmly believe if anyone can turn Memphis' sophomore season with us, it's the man-management of Jose.

Definitely, Mourinho would find the way to fit Memphis in the squad, either right side, or left because Martial needs some rest or using both of them together switching sides during the game. Mourinho needs fast creative wingers, right now we have Martial,Memphis,Lingard I reckon Jose gonna sell Mata and Young and replace them with a more experienced and talented player,hopefully Griezmann. We also have Januzaj and Pereira but they are not ready yet for the first team.

With Zlatan we have height in the box with the added touch of class, something we've lacked in recent years (Fellaini did a job, but there's a supreme difference in he and Zlatan's ability on scoring from crosses). Memphis, despite the criticisms, has a great right foot on him, and played with a very similar styled target man at PSV in de Jong. I think It would be a good option most definitely.

You know a player is poor when you start asking can he play other positions. "Can Memphis play ST?" "Can Memphis play CAM?"

Just face the facts, he hasn't been good enough the last year and he either pulls his finger out and starts performing on the left or he will be shipped off.

TBH I don't see a future for him but I hope I'm wrong.

That's hugely negative. Most of the best players in the world have changed posititons in their career.

Messi started out as a right winger and then moved to striker and then back to right wing, to compliment his team.

Ronaldo has played on the left, middle and right, to compliment his abilities.

Bale has played LEFT BACK, left wing and now right wing at madrid, to compliment his abilities and his team.

Muller played right winger, striker, CF and center midfield, to compliment his team.

Everyone on here has such a boner for Memphis. He's produced nothing and has a shit attitude. Outside of a tinpot league in Holland what has he done? Certainly doesn't look international standard.

Yeah exactly. He's not got the mentality to play for Utd.

I'm not sure what he's done to have everyone fawning over him. And none of this "what's wrong with supporting our players". Adnan has been shat on by most people despite the fact he's produced more in his PL career than Memphis.

Playing him at RW would waste his best attribute (though he hasn't been able to show it a lot this season) him cutting in and shooting from range. I think we need a left-footer for the RW.

It depends, if Zlatan is a target in the middle, getting decent service from the wing might be just as important as cutting in and shooting.

The problem I have with having a left footer on the right aswell as having a right footer on the left is that we won't have much wide play. It will be mostly cutting inside and providing help for the striker. Next season we all think it is going to be Ibrahimovic up top and yes, all strikers need support but Martial cutting inside to help Ibrahimovic would be plenty, we need a proper winger who can whip in a ball with pace and accuracy. That is why I think Memphis can do a job there.

He can't even do much in his best position, I have little hope of him performing out of position. There is no point shoehorning in a player who can't perform.

Nah he will turn into a world class player during pre season just watch. Apparently Ronaldo was bad during his first season so that means memphis will turn into a world class player soon or something like that.
