Welcome to Mondays on the Mulsanne! This is the /r/WEC "no stupid questions"/town hall-type post, and we ask that any questions you have about the series, races, formats, classes, streaming, etc of the WEC be posted here!

If there's anything about the WEC that you're unsure about or you want more information on, here is the place to ask!

A few things from us;

  • The Nurburgring 24 had just finished on sunday, and wow, what a cracker of a race! Massive thanks to /u/kriswascher97 for helping put it all together, and everyone who came along in the IRC. If you didn't catch this race, I definitely suggest at least finding highlights somewhere, and the last 15 minutes to watch.
  • The WEChat podcast is now on it's new hosting site! You can also find it on iTunes or via RSS
  • FOR THOSE ASKING ABOUT STREAMING of the Spa 6hr! A full race replay can be found on the official app, which is broken into hour segments. You will have access to the race for 3 weeks for free if you had bought the app access. Otherwise, the replays can be bought for < 3 Euro.
  • LE MANS HYPE. This weekend is the Official Test for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There will be no streaming of the event, however Radio Le Mans will be providing audio coverage, and there will be live timing via the official FIAWEC page. Look for the official discussion posts over the weekend.
  • In addition to this, we've got some big events planned for the sub, including an upcoming AMA with Toyota LMP1 driver Anthony Davison. The mods have a few more surprises planned, so keep your eyes on the sub in the coming days...
  • Le Mans is just around the corner! Every week, we will have a new banner and footer image, reflecting a decade of Le Mans history. This week, it's the 1980's and 90's; the era of Group C. The banner for this week was made by /u/PJTierney2003, using his amazing Mazda 787b artwork. Other important Group C cars include the Silk Cut Jaguar XJR9-LM, and the Rothmans Porsche 956/962c

Episode 3, the one after Bathurst 12hrs. I would say I had a favourite bit but it was all great! I really liked your account of going to Bathurst, but I also learned a load more about all the different teams entering the WEC this year. I'm going to listen to a few more today, for sure!

I watched N24 and noticed that there are, at least, two cars which driven by the same set of drivers.

Is it common in endurance races? Is it allowed in WEC?

The N24 is a bit of a special case in which drivers can be shared between two cars. Some other series do this as well (Creventic 24hr series and on occasion USCR) but they have to nominate which car they can earn points in before the race.

This practice is NOT allowed in the WEC. Each driver is committed to a single car throughout the race.

Since Mazda is the first and only (so far) Japanese marque that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, many videos were spawned around appreciating the rotary prototype. This year marks the 787b's 25th anniversary of Mazda's victory of Le Mans as well as the last year of the 2616 cc 4-rotor naturally aspirated wankel engine was fielded before it's complete ban (well...forced out). This NHK documentary details the history of Mazda and it's experience in Le Mans. The movie is part two of a two parter history of the rotary engine called "47 rotary engineers". Since it's has a whiff of Japanese patriotism, it peddles the rotary engine as if it was a miraculous, futuristic technology (in reality it's rather inefficient), draws lines to traditional Japanese legends (47 engineers -> 47 Ronin) and somewhat omits non-Japanese key personnels that contributed to the win (Nigel Stroud designed it, Johnny Herbert being one of the drivers in the 55 car).

Regardless, it's somewhat of an interesting take on the Mazda's racing history.

This is a dramatisation of the 1991 Le Mans race. I have no comment if it's good or not mostly because majority of the movie is in Japanese with some bits in English via the pit crew. It doesn't help that there's no subtitles around but eh. I've found this while I was trekking around YouTube.

There won't be video streaming through the app. Some teams may have streaming available however. Radio Le Mans will be live at the track though

What happened the #1 car? When i fell asleep it was fairly high up the order, but when i woke up it had fallen waaay behind.

The 1 was involved in an accident heading through Pflanzgarten which tore the left side off the car and left it sitting to the right side of the track. The damage was too severe to repair

Free as long as you pay? :D

The 3 weeks seems to be also very artificial restriction. Silverstone files are still available on the Akamai servers.

The pictures are all courtesy of /u/lada_safety_car. He knows where to look and what to do with them

As far as the flairs go; When we added manufacturer flairs, we had to remove some flairs to make room for the new ones. Once the spotters guide is released, we'll re-update everything with every Le Mans livery
