Follow the Freedom Trail.

We did! The North Church was a cool stop...but not quite the same as the game.

I used to work in the building next to Old South Meetinghouse, there was a wild turkey (the annoyingly dangerous kind, not the dumb fat kind) that liked its roof and it's an endangered animal so animal control could do nothing. We used to watch it leap from the roof into a group of tourists and attack.

Urban turkeys are notorious in Boston. Nasty fuckers, they attack for fun

Lived north of Boston, had a turkey just waltz into my house and chase my cat once.

On a side note, now I wish they'd added rad turkeys. What a wasted opportunity Bethesda.

Wait....that's a real thing?

Most of it is. I took a trip to Boston last summer (coincidentally, but it fueled the hype to insane levels). We walked the freedom trail, and seeing it in the game was so rad.

Edit: Thanks to all the people answering other's questions, I was only in Boston for 2 days and know very little about it.

I'm on the other side of the world (Australia) with no chance to see it.
What's missing? Just a couple of stops?
Obviously there isn't going to be a pile of rubble with some feral dogs. Right?

It's literally a 2.5 mile long path (red line on the sidewalk) through downtown Boston that passes 16 locations significant to United States history. It starts in Boston Common and ends at the Bunker Hill Monument.

Of course not. It's Boston, not Baltimore... sheesh. /s

I think you meant Detroit, not Baltimore.

Well being from Maryland, Baltimore is our slightly less tragic version of Detroit. So I prefer that as my example.

Baltimore got the better tv show. Omar is the shit.

The Freedom Trail IRL actually continues past Old North Church across the Charles to the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill. Some of the Boston stops aren't marked in-game, I think, though the only ones it actually skips outright is Paul Revere's House and Copp's Hill Burying Ground (which is the stop right after Old North Church). Copp's Hill Burying Ground actually is in the game, though.

Paul Revere's house is in the game and is part of the Freedom Trail. I've been there and can confirm. Just google "Fallout 4 Paul Revere house" for proof.

Oh, whoops. I guess I just forgot about it, since I didn't stop there for long.

You can walk it electronically, I think. It shows you the street views and the buildings and you can visit each place.

Old North Church is fucking amazing, they totally didn't highlight the outside at all, which is creepy as Southern Gothic.

[–]NightmarePulseBrotherhood Outcast 3

I like just out of Boston and I went to school in Boston up until about a year ago. I like to think I am playing Fallout 4 24/7.

Oddly, Quincy in the game is more civilized than real-life.

And my wife, who uses VANS, is getting very tired of my "TAKE THE GREEN LINE" joke.

[–]NightmarePulseBrotherhood Outcast 0

Yeah, there are some odd differences in the game. Haha. I can understand the impulse to use it, though. =P

I did the same thing with Fallout 3. Went to DC on a trip with friends and ended up being the tour guide. They asked me how many times I've made the walk around the monuments and stuff... "In real life or in Fallout 3? Because this is my first time in real life...."

[–]NightmarePulseBrotherhood Outcast 6

Indeed it is, I like walking on the red line and then running into people because I'm a dunce. I used to work in the state house, but I was disappointed to see its ruined interior. I wanted nostalgia and what I got was mirelurks.

"Helloooooo I'm the Nostalgia Mirelurk, I murder it so you don't have to!"

FWIW The Old North Church had some pretty big importance during the Revolutionary War. That's where the whole "one if by land, two if by sea" thing started. I'm pretty sure that's not actually how it went down and it's a little romanticized, but definitely a big deal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_North_Church?oldformat=true

Funny trivia: Preston references that if you bring him there. Just happened to do that today.

What do you mean?

Where do you think they hung the lanterns to tell the lobsterbacks were coming up to take our guns?

Yep. My wife and I are basically doing a FO4 walking tour

If you're still there, Mt. Auburn is a mindblowingly beautiful and peaceful place. Definitely worth the visit.

Also, the Sam Adams brewery in Jamaica Plains is bad freaking ass.

Aside from that, I loved going to the Long Pier as well as visiting the college campuses. Harvard and MIT are just down the river from each other, and both are fascinating to visit.

Any recommendations for a huge, awesome burger for dinner tonight ?

The Haven in Jamaica Plain (not plains) or J.M Curley's in downtown.

Coincidently when fallout 4 came out I wanted to see some landmarks I saw on my trip to Boston. This lead me to find Old North Church, forcing the puzzle in the basement and stumbling upon the Railroad by complete accident. It was quite a surprise to me.

I read that in Grognak's voice.

I read it in William Shatner's voice.

I read that in a George Clooney voice, more commonly known as Paladin Danse.

That wasn't George Clooney. I thought the same thing at first, but it's a guy named Peter Jessop. He could make a living doing Clooney impressions, though.

My husband looks like Grognak, but back when he had long black hair. Blonde one in F4 is not as menacing. More like the homoerotic He-Man from the 80s. Not sexy, disturbing actually.

I remember about 4-5 hours into the game on my first load I walked past the park and Dogmeat got in the water a took a swim. So I decided to jump in behind my companion... To my surprise, I got F U C K E D U P.

To this day I haven't gotten anywhere near that place.

Did you not read all the signs? I mean, someone went way out of their way to warn you about the swan. I typically do still go through the common, the edges are safe enough if Swan is underwater. Only once have I seen him not under the water when I came by...

If you have a melee character, or fuck tons of ammo, he's stupidly easy to kill.

If you just get inside the shipping container on the outskirts of the pond and he can't hit you, but you can hack away at him little by little. It isn't the most glorifying way to win, but it's nice to have the power fists early on in the game.

Also, Swann's backstory is really cool.

I am not in it for the glory. Definitely remembering this one, thanks.

I just hid in Park Street Station.

There's a truck on the corner nearby that you can hide in as well. He'll walk away every time, and you just hop out and pick at him till he comes back, then hide again and repeat.

Put down like 5 or 6 bottlecap mines before he spawns. Walk behind them. He will walk into them and die. Fight over.

I "glitch" killed him, kind of on accident. I was walking through and saw him, then started running around frantically looking for a place to go. There is a small wall about 3 feet tall, and I did the classic "run around the table so you'll never catch me" bit while unloading into his face. I've never actually seen him go in the water.

[–]e1337ninjaI have a glitchy pip-boy

A jet and a Fatman make quick work of him even if you're low level. I also found a spot where you can snipe him from the fallen sky bridge or whatever is called if you have a sniper and no Fatman.

Overseers guardian works well too. Just pop a psycho jet and one or 2 clips and he's done

Reba II + Silencer + upgrades, rifle/sandman perk = most things going down in 1-shot with headshot.

Problem is, I rarely get the chance to 1-shot things.

you can just hide in the shipping container thats right there where you find him and hack away at him til he dies.

Welcome to our crumbling city! If you have the time, please actually visit some of the fo4 areas like college square (Harvard Square, and the nearby squares like Central for that matter), the back bay areas like Boylston and Newbury Street, the North End (I don't think this is specifically included but you really can't afford to miss the food there), Bunker Hill etc. Boston is a great city, I hope you enjoy it here! Don't go in the Charles River.

Hey, the Charles isn't that bad these days. You can swim it and you probably won't even die.

[–]Lurdia 3

You let me know how that goes my dude, I'll be way the fuck over here in Reading with my OWN toxic water source, tyvm.

[–]NightmarePulseBrotherhood Outcast 1

Hey, its not crumbling. Well... its sort of is, but its beautiful. I wish the Christian Science stuff was in the game, that reflecting pool is beautiful. They did include the crazy cult in the theatre, so its kind of the same.

[–]Lurdia 1

Oh I forgot about the reflecting pool!! Went there once on late night college shenanigans with my best friend, it was so beautiful even at night.

eta: also, don't get me wrong, I love our crumbling gray-ass city lol

[–]NightmarePulseBrotherhood Outcast 1

Been in those situations XD. I love it too.

We are actually staying in North End, on Cooper St. We swung by Harvard today, walked around Cambridge, and we are right now in a pub by Chinatown.

[–]Lurdia 0

Oh fantastic! The North End is one of my fave neighborhoods (shameless Italian here). If you haven't ventured into Chinatown yet, please do. The touristy gift shops and tea houses are great. And if you go back towards Cambridge at any point, there's this restaurant called Annie Chung's in Central Square that I really recommend. :)

To be fair, we are used to a Boston ruined by a nuclear attack, so it's bound to be in better shape than that.... right?

[–]Lurdia 1

You would think.

No but real talk Boston has some gorgeous places in it, both old and new. But it's one of the oldest major cities in America so a LOT of it is also really busted lmao. Especially the T.

Lynn looks pretty much the same as in-game though.

I took Swan down without a lot of difficulty on an earlier playthrough. Tried it again on Survival a few nights ago and did not have a good time. He crushed my head with a rock like it was a ripe melon.

There's so many indestructible barriers to hide behind. I cheesed him using some trees instead of the bus or container.

I was never underleveled since I made the mistake of thinking Preston's quests were actually leading somewhere. I was level 38 by the time I got to Diamond city.

[–]ChairmaamMeowOutstanding!

First time i went there, a Raider aggroed Swan somehow and the attack happened before I even knew what was going on... Next time I visited the area Swan scared the hell out of me because I didn't know he spawned there. :(

Man, you're just lucky the actual swans aren't nesting right now. DCR puts up fences every year when they show up. The fences aren't to protect the swans, they're to protect people.

[–]Rogue_freemanCrazy Crazy Commonwealth 1

Honestly I didn't realize this was in FO4 subreddit when I clicked and I had this eerie feeling looking at the photo like I'd be here before but couldn't place it, then I looked at the swan... and I thought "Wow this looks a lot like that place where.... oh I'm an idiot".

RIP OP. YSK If you stand far enough away he can't hurt you!

I was so disappointed playing survival when encountering Swan. He died so quickly against my 44.

Really? I've avoided the fight because I figured it would take hours to bring him down.... I have a spray and pray... that should help, right?

Not sure. I wen't with pistols and associated perks. I imagine it should be fine. It really was disappointingly quick. Watch out for Jamaica Plain and other ghoul places. Those suckers come fast and hit hard. Hubris comics was tense.

Swan was easy. There is a bus blocking the road on one side of the pond. Just kite him around that bus. He can't touch you.

Ditto. Overseer's Guardian and a few sniper shots took him out by the time he was done roaring in my direction.

Awesome. There's a chance I might get to visit Boston this summer. I can't wait to walk the freedom trail!!!

As someone who lives in Boston my class took a field trip down the freedom trail about 3 days before fallout 4s release (I'm 15) and everyone was getting so hyped.

I lived in Cambridge and in Somerville a long time (the town of Somerville, not the settlement, is next to Cambridge and not marked separately on the in-game map). Be sure to hit up Central, Union, Inman Squares. And Harvard Square tip: good bookstores, don't go into the tourist shops. The Harvard Bookstore, not the Coop; [Schoenhof's Foreign Books](www.schoenhofs.com/) (largest language-learning and non-English bookseller in the US); Grolier's Poetry (tiny and amazing); The Raven (used books, super amazing). Don't buy books at the Coop.

If you really want Harvard nostalgia, get something with the tiniest "H" or "Harvard" on it from the Coop (yes, the place where you don't buy books); if you wear a giant red H t-shirt you're gonna look like a rube and if you shop elsewhere it'll be shoddy rip-off.

Hey me too! Sitting at the airport now. Walking around town was eerie.

Isn't it weird to get a sense of déjà vu from a place you've never been before.

I went to Boston for PAX East, and as is my want, wandered around the city before and after the event to soak in the moment of visiting the US. There were so many moments, where I just suddenly stopped and looked around, taking in the scene of a place I know pretty well whilst never having been there before. Whilst a lot of the game is "smaller" than real life, it's still there in the architecture and specific buildings.

You see that tree on the far side of the pond? About 6 years ago, I was the creep always hanging out there writing in my notebook.

Went to Boston in March for the first time and the first thing I saw from the plane was Fort Independence and I was totally dumbfounded. Felt totally surreal.

Did a duck boat tour and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I at least somewhat knew my way around merely from playing the game.
