You could ask them to explain why they think that I suppose, but you'd just get more fumfering. It's not particular to these guys, a lot of people seem resolutely against being convinced of anything contrary to their current opinion. I think it's probably an issue of not wanting to 'lose' or look weak because it's embarrassing.

Ever talked with a religious person and told them that you don't think that their god is real because there is no scientific evidence to support a god?

Same thing.

Edit: Ah. The old reddit hypocrisy. Tell an anti-vaxxer that his believes are full of shit because there isn't any scientific evidence to back them up and you get thousands of upvotes and multiple gold. But tell a religious person that his believes might be false because there isn't any scientific evidence to back them up and you get downvoted.

You do know not all religious people are like that, right?

[–]bob_in_the_west -11ポイント-10ポイント  (10子コメント)

What exactly are you saying?

That there are religious people who don't believe that their god is real essentially making all their believes irrelevant?

[–]Yamilord 12ポイント13ポイント  (9子コメント)

No? But the way you worded it makes it seem like all religious people will be overly defensive over their believes.

I'm not sure what you define as "religious people".

I was born as a catholic. But that doesn't make me religious in this day and age. It's a mere label.

If you are religious then you do believe in your Religion actually being real. And if someone comes along and tells you otherwise then you either stick with being religious and argue as such or stop being religious.

Or just not argue. I mean lots of people have different opinions, some more defensive than others. Not everyone has to have their beliefs verified by someone who believes differently. I have to imagine that some religious people don't believe in everything that's fed to them but believe in the message, or the community.

So what you're saying is that you shouldn't argue with anti-vaxxers because lots of people have different opinions, some more defensive than others?

Yes, I agree. It's pointless.

[–]Spliif 5ポイント6ポイント  (5子コメント)

No I was just saying not all religious people will argue with you, or stop believing what they believe. You're right though, arguing with most anti vaxxers is like screaming at a wall, not unlike arguing science with a religious person. My point is (for whatever that's worth) there's a third category that won't be phased, or argue about either.

And not all anti-vaxxers will argue with you, or stop believing what they believe.

That's my whole point.

There is no difference in talking with an anti-vaxxer about vaccines or talking with a religious person about religion.
