Fall back? There is no falling back. You're in trenches and this gas is heavier than air. You fuck up a gas attack and end up gassing yourselves, you should die if you don't get a gas mask on in time.

Trenches are dug into the ground. If you can't get back via the utility trenches, which couldn't possibly accommodate all the troops in the first trench and would also be filling with gas, you'd have to go over the top, which makes you extremely vulnerable to enemy machine gun fire.
