It does solve one of the issues people had with the case, that Gamaliel gets to keep his admin bit. This retirement, means that he has as a fact, resigned under a cloud per the policy and thus, MUST go through an RfA to get it back. An RfA that isn't very likely to pass.

That being said. The remedy about Gamaliel is not really what concerns me about this case, but the reasoning that the arbs are applying which for most arbs that has voted, are riddled with fallacies.

Someone is naive. Arbcom will just say it's not a cloud and let him keep them. He'll be one of those editors who paste the retired tag up for years and use that whenever he's called out again.

No but if he's retired, he has to lose it. You're not allowed to keep the admin bit if you are retired. Also outside of ArbCom jurisdiction. Policy on that though would require him to be inactive for a a bit more though before he would policywise be considered to have gone inactive and thus, no longer eligible to keep the admin bit.

While Wikipedia has issues, that is a bit far. Especially given that many admins have issues with Gamaliel.

Arbcom may cover their own, but theya re a small 'elite' group. The Admin community is much less small, and much more prone to taking out vendettas on other Admins when they can.

Can someone clarify if he actually loses his administrator powers automatically when he 'retires' or do they just expire over a set period?

There's not really any protocol for retiring. If you are inactive for a too long however, you lose your admin bit, which you can then request back at a later time without a RfA unless you lost it "under a cloud". Him going inactive like this is pretty clearly under a cloud, but it's likely going to be argued that he's not losing admin under a cloud because that will be some time from now and thus be "completely unrelated to this case". That's why at least I, feel it's NOT moot as some of Gamaliel's friends claim, if he will be desysoped from the case or not.

he doesn't lose them and if perchance he is inactive long enough to lose the tools (he'll log in for the minimum so moot) and wants them back, he'll argue that arbcom chose not to take them so it's not a cloud. same is true for Cu/OS - the lack of arbcom action means they can be restored. he's not resigning/retiring to make it easy for arbcom, he's doing it to make it easier for himself later.
