It's a real shame you played Fallout 4 first. It's certainly the smoothest and most stable of the games, but don't let that hold you back from the wonders of New Vegas. It's still a great game and you can really get absorbed into it.

It is in no way a shame...

It might make it harder for him to get into NV, just because he's been spoiled by FO4.

I bought Oblivion after playing Skyrim for a few hundred hours. I launched the game, played 15 minutes, thought it was the worst thing ever, and didn't touch it again for 6 months.

Then one day I launched it again and was completely absorbed. It's one of my favorite games now. OP might have a similar experience having played FO4 first.

It is in every way a shame. I also have a friend who's only played FO4 and he thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread totally unaware of the wonders of NV and getting fisted by a Protectron prostitute.

I've got 1000 hours on New Vegas and bought it first on launch date in 2010. It was my favorite game for 5 years.

Now I think Fallout 4 is my favorite game and I really don't want to play New Vegas again.

It's not a shame, it's an opinion.

But I'm ready for /r/Fallout to shame me for not blindly accepting the last game as the best. Gee I wonder if people will criticize Fallout 5 like this, like they did to New Vegas when it came out.

I think we're missing the point. The old games, clunky as they are, are decidedly less accessible than FO4. They're mechanically and certainly graphically inferior, so if you're accustomed to the relatively smooth performance and gunplay of FO4, it can feel like a step back that's tough to grapple with for many.

On the other hand, New Vegas is the deepest game in the series, with easily the best writing and role playing elements. FO4 hardly feels like a "role playing game" at all by comparison. Back when we all first played them, it was easier to overlook the "clunk" because there was nothing else quite like the games out there, but for your average gamer today, certainly anyone who's a bit more casual, I could see it being difficult to go back to FO3/NV after playing FO4.

Playing on PC with some decent mods would definitely help though.

Edit: I should add to address your latter point - the backlash against FO4 here is all to do with the dumbing down (some might say omission) of real role playing. If FO5 continues in that direction, minimizing RP elements in favor of accessibility, sure, you can bank on people being similarly disappointed.

"On the other hand, New Vegas is the deepest game in the series, with easily the best writing and role playing elements." Fallout 2 would like a word with you.

Yeah I don't know... They may actually be neck in neck in some places. Fo2 is my second favorite, with FNV being the first, since it managed to balance the silly and funny shit that was way over the top in Fo2, with the seriousness with the Fallout universe that I could actually take... Seriously.

OWB was on Fo2 territory the entire time in terms of tone though, but it's still probably my one of my favorite DLCs, with Dead Money (probably one of the most serious parts of Fallout) is also a big favorite of mine. Like, these two DLCs have wildly different tones, yet are still in the same universe. FNV was amazingly diverse in that regard, and O guess one could argue that it is deeper than Fo2 as a result.

[–]velmarg 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'd actually be inclined to think New Vegas beats even FO2 in that regard, but to each his or her own.

I disagree on Fallout 2. Imo, New Vegas hit the definitive balance of everything a Fallout game should be. Fallout 2 was too wacky for me.

My experience exactly. It's ridiculous that people hold NV up as some godlike creation because it has SOME features that are better than F4, while being fucking BLIND to the features F4 has which are superior to NV. The NV circlejerk is just moronoic and at this point is tarnishing my memory of NV not enhancing it.

F4 has a LOT of improvements, some questionable changes, a few inferior aspects. And they're still adding more and more to it. It's not even a question which I'd prefer to be playing today.

Gee I wonder if people will criticize Fallout 5 like this, like they did to New Vegas when it came out.

Yup! I remember when F3 came out and the F2 diehards ranted about how moronic anyone was who thought it was a good game. That it was total shit, an FPS, vats is just an afterthought rather than the core of the game etc... Some time passed, NV threw a little more polish on it, and now it's the second coming. F4 will definitely become the gold standard, even around here, because it IS fantastic. I mean, look at what you just replied too, someone who's upset that a person new to the franchise thinks F4 is the best. Get ready for that to become the majority around here boys, those kids are gonna be all up in your lawn.

Without going into too deep of an argument, I want to say that I enjoyed NV more than F4 and still believe NV to be a superior RPG. Fallout 4 and NV aren't comparable in my opinion, and I truly think both games are striving to be different things. Much of my dislike for F4 is due to the story just coming off as poorly written and the obvious parallels to F3. There are so many quests that are just carbon copies of the same quests we did in F3. I mean for christs sake, when Ingram opened the door to reveal the Brotherhoods new super advanced weapon I was super excited...followed by immediate dissapointment. Oh. Liberty Prime. Again. Hey look a new DLC! Oh...The Mechanist....again. Now I will say that, they tackled alot of stuff in a new manner and it wasnt all that bad. I guess I was just disappointed because I wanted something new, and instead I got the improved old.

Both games are good, NV is getting more defense because F4 feels a bit too much like F3.5. But I dont really think thats fair. A game as big as Fallout is gunna be ripped apart and dissected to pieces with every little detail being examined. People have been slow to embrace some of the new features. I've been rambling and typed too much now to just delete my comment but all I'm trying to say is that the games are going for different things. F4 is not as much of an RPG as NV is and people that wanted an RPG are disappointed. Once time passes it will just be accepted that the games were/are different and both good in their own respects.

I've even had people on this sub call me a liar for saying that people said the same shit about New Vegas on launch. I remember it pretty well...considering I was one of the fanboys defending it constantly.

It seriously isn't the game they're making it out to be. You got given 4 skill checks in dialogue that all ended up at the same response anyway. The map is empty, and the game has 8 random events in total. Completely predictable and no challenge at all if you've played it through at least once.

Silly /r/Fallout, criticising a game for scrapping the main element that made the series good. HOW DARE THEY HAVE AN OPINION!

Silly /r/Fallout. Downvoting someone for not riding the New Vegas bandwagon. HOW DARE I HAVE AN OPINION!

So, enjoying a Fallout game and possibly wanting more Fallout because of that game is bad?

[–]NOBLExGAMERNCR Ranger 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

It's a shame that one's first experience with Fallout is the game that's the least Fallout-y.

[–]DGT-exeMY army, bitch. -3ポイント-2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Oh brother. We've got another one, boys.

[–]Jonex_Welcome Home 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's fairly obvious that Gamebryo is inferior to the Creation engine. That's why I say it's a shame. Just compare the shooting in New Vegas to the shooting in Fallout 4 and you'll easily see the vast gap.

Obviously this isn't the case for everyone. I'm just saying most people would find it difficult to adjust to New Vegas if they've already experienced a game that plays better.

I want to add it is a bit of a shame but not for the Circlejerky reason but something like Chowder says as the reason ot is a shame. As time progresses accessability changes. Although other media can suffer this, an example being a book where culture and the words used become archaic to a modern reader, a films graphics can become dated, etc I would argue that video games can be in particular challenging to go backwards to play older games.

Graphics, mechanics, the type of game (isometric/cavalier oblique vs First Person) all have changed and evolved. I love 1, 2, NV, 4, and i like 3 and think Tactics is fun. If i had to pick a favorite it would be 2. I feel it did a lot of things better than 1, 3, NV, and 4. I also think it did a lot worse on some things.

The biggest catch is accessability. The older the game, the more challenging it is to get back into. Playing NV again with no mods after playing 4 would be painful in a variety of ways. The graphics downgrade, the lack of sprinting, the lack of quick loot, going from a competent fps to a rpg where the shooting was.... strange to sat the least. I think that each of the Fallout games does some things better than the rest but from a pure ease of play modern games are generally more accessable/easy to play. For many it can make going back a difficult thing which is a shame because not being able to go back means missing out on some great games.

Does that make any sense?
