1stly, we call it land out here. 2ndly, I guess they really only started teaching environmental science in high school a few decades ago. I can't really blame you for not knowing that no mow zones are "best management practices" for the floodplain.

Thanks for the advice. The lawn is the drainage mitigation plan. The goal is that, when a 100year flood does happen, soil will accumulate upon my land rather than flow downriver, eventually to the gulf.

The other goal is to soak up water whenever it rains so that communities downriver receive less water. I did the math and one deluge event (10") can drop 130,000 gallons of water on my property. 80% of that would simply run off of a lawn, while with my polyculture systems in place, theoretically 80% of that water could be soaked in like a sponge.

I really do have 80 saplings growing in my front yard. I think only the lilac bushes, the tamarack, and the willow are inedible, but they're all useful.

My pawpaws are leafing out and I'm giddy with excitement. I had thought a late frost had injured them grievously.

It's hay field. Like, hay. Specifically a mix of Bermudagrass and Oat. I seeded it 7 years ago. It gets lime and fertilizer once a year. What millions of gallons of soil and water am I adding to anything? Hell, if anything, drainage from by hay field goes into one of my ponds, so it'll settle out there.

I have less than no desire to raise cattle beyond the 3 that I raise for myself, but even if I did, the fact remains that they have to eat something in the winter.
