Did you ever get a total count on how many of his ribs you broke?

[–]bastardblaster 24ポイント25ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've had CPR performed on me before, and it's not like when I've had broken ribs; they don't break in the middle of the bone. Basically all of my ribs detached from my sternum, of which there isn't much left. Now if I cough or gag, they make a grinding sound.

I didn't! Based on the number of snaps I felt during, maybe 5? It's such a gross feeling, I cringe every time. I can't imagine how bad it must hurt for them.

Well atleast when it happens they are unconcious.

Not dead. Death is legally, and medically, distinct from cardiac arrest. Death is the irreversible cessation of all bodily functions; whereas we can and do reversibly stop the heart (eg during cardiac surgery) or resuscitate stopped hearts (as in this case).

When got first aid training, they told us that if didn't break ribs, we didn't do it hard enough. Logic?

A chest full of broken ribs is better than dead. It takes a lot of force to get that pressure on the heart.

[–]Curri 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Not exactly true. They're just telling you that so you don't subconsciously become afraid of injuring them. Also, people tend to not apply enough force for whatever reasons.

Exactly what I learned as well, and what my nurse GF says.

This is the question we need an answer for, OP.

So given nothing was mentioned about him threatening you with a lawsuit, did you speak with him, maybe get some gratitude for saving his life?

[–]cprthrowaway123[S] 20ポイント21ポイント  (1子コメント)

I didn't. I feel like enough time has passed, it would be weird to walk up to him and say "hey, remember that time you died?" If he approached me, I'd love to chat with him, but considering the gym manager told his family he did everything, it would be weird to bring it up first, and I don't know if he even knows anyone else was involved. I just know what I know because the girl at the front desk told me. I'm an icu nurse, most of the patients I code are already in such bad shape, their prognosis just goes from bad to worse. So seeing someone I actively had a hand in saving doing so well is all I need.

Hmm. You could casually say something like, "i was here that day. It's really great to see you're doing well and back to being active." And leave it at that. He may like that there are people who notice his recovery.

I found a very informative article about good Samaritan laws and medical professionals. It cleared it all up for me. I wasn't sure either and I am about to finish med school! It's a common misconception that you will get sued because you volunteer care in an emergency with the result of a poor outcome.

If any damage isn't excessive and you did nearly the v right method, you're fine.

Like you didn't use your foot to do compressions, you didn't cause excessive damage that is deemed unnecessary, just things like that. Good Samaritan laws are designed to protect you just for trying if anything happens.
