This will take a bit of explaining, so bare with me.
I currently lease two apartments in WV. Apt A's lease ends July 31st, and Apt B's started on May 15th. I wasn't originally going to move into Apt B until August, but I signed a lease when the then tenant moved out early. I've got the next two months of Apt A's rent paid with my deposit, so I was very happy to lock up my next apartment so soon.
Now, since the tenant moved out so suddenly (and he lived there for a constant 3 years), there are some repairs and cleaning that needs to be done. Also, the keys were in rough shape, so the landlord told me that she would get new ones for me, and that my apartment should be done this week. I walked in and saw my apartment about 5 days ago, and I noticed that there was a bit of repair that needed to be done, but I was confident that they'd be hard at work on it over the weekend.
Today, I decided to stop by my apartment to check on the progress. The landlord is gone for the holiday weekend, but I figured that the maintenance crew might be there. So, I went upstairs and knocked on my door. There was no response, but I could hear the faint sound of a television. I found it strange, and tried the knob. I found it unlocked, and I went inside. In my living room, I found my bed (from a studio apartment elsewhere in the building that the tenant did not want, so the landlord gave to me) on the floor, covered with a blanket and two pillows. There was a tv and DVD player set up, as well as a couple chairs next to the bed.
One of the ladies (lets call her Rose) comes out of my bedroom, and is immediately apologetic. Rose tells me that the landlord said it would be okay if her and HER BOYFRIEND stay in my apartment over the weekend because "he can't stay in her room upstairs." Needless to say, I was very upset and confused. I've never experienced something like this before.
I will hopefully meet with the landlord to discuss this tomorrow. There is not a single number I can call to reach her now besides her work phone. If she does properly explain herself tomorrow, then I believe I'll try everything in my power to get my money back and get out of this lease. I could use help with this situation
tl;dr: I found two squatters in my apartment in which is still under repair, and I do not yet have keys for, and they said that the landlord allowed them to stay there.
