Lemme do a quick summary:

why this post doesn't need spoiler tag

  • I know about it already
  • people I talk to know about it already
  • it's been 20 years
  • it's been beaten to death
  • lots of people outside this subreddit knows
  • here are some movie spoilers "everyone" has watched

why this post needs a spoiler tag

  • not everyone has had the opportunity of having access to English or Japanese gaming culture
  • not everyone was gaming 20 years ago, up to now
  • from those people exploring English and Japanese gaming, FF is obviously one of the milestones they would be interested in.
  • and of course, /r/FinalFantasy would be one of the places they would go to decide which one to play first

It would be no different than going into your local grade 5 classroom right now and telling them what happens in the last Harry Potter movie. The book came out almost 10 years ago and is well known even outside of children's literature.

Think about it. There are people who are clueless about world war 2.

Yeah, and the fact that FF7 is getting a remake soon makes the spoiler tag even more necessary, since loads of people will hop on the game for the 1st time.

At this point though, hasn't "Aeris dies" entered internet pop culture about as much as "Luke, I am your father"?

I recently watched a video where this dad and his son are watching The Empire Strikes Back and the son freaks out at that scene.

So, these plot twists can still affect someone!

I didn't even think about that. Good point!

[–]Schwahn [

So, this says "Issue #2"

Where is "Issue #1"?

Needs spoiler tag

/s

Seriously?

But anyways, this is pretty funny.

My thoughts exactly. It's been almost 20 years, I think you can skip the spoiler tag.

Except when a remake is coming out and people are gonna play it for their first time...

How does that change the fact that this joke has been beaten to death for 20 years?

Nobody is going to jump off a bridge because of this. They won't even get it if they haven't played the game.

[–]Daneyn [

... If you have't played 7 since it came out... I don't think it needs a spoiler. if you read ANYTHING on FF series, Aeris's death is well known and beat into the ground one way or another.

beat into the ground one way or another

So what you're saying is, other people spoiled it already so why can't I?

Lol, it's meant to say that everyone knows, and there is a ton of fan fiction and fan art about it and so many people have been cutting onions over it, that it's not a spoiler anymore.

Fan fiction and fan art are only read and viewed by well, fans. How about people who haven't? Not just the people living under a rock, but kids who have only played candy crush, or people whose first language isn't English or Japanese? There are still many people outside of gaming culture who are not included in your "everyone".

Aerith's**

Or, if you going to insist on spelling her name wrong as the original programmers did, Aeris'*

When a name ends in S the apostrophe doesn't require another S afterwards to be possessive.

This should really have a spoiler tag.

Edit: Coming to this thread 6 hours later, I'm shocked that some of our community is mad about the fact that the thread now has a spoiler tag. Even if you don't think it needs one, what harm does the spoiler tag do to you? When I first commented, I was only looking out for the series new comers that have yet to experience this scene. There are people that have not played FFVII, and there are people that do not know about this death. Even if you, your friends, your family and your neighbors know about this... Why the hell would you be up in arms about the spoiler tag being added? So disappointing...

The game is almost 20 years old, and her death is well known. Also, Darth Vader is Luke's father.

"Please tag major spoilers, remember that there may be people reading that are new to the franchise!"

It's the first rule that shows up on the sidebar. There's no point in going out of our way to avoid that rule and rob people of the most impactful scene in the game. It doesn't matter if the spoiler is well known or not.

Man this is one the most well-known deaths in gaming history and it talked about elsewhere casually with no issue. There ARE major events that would need a spoiler tag in other games - and even some from this particular game! - but this would be like going to a Star Wars sub and throwing a fit that they didn't put a spoiler on the fact that Darth Vader is Luke's father, or going to a classic films sub and complaining that they casually mention that Rosebud is the name of a sled. This is NOT a major spoiler.

[–]ELI5_MODS_SUCK_ASS [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I disagree. I mean sure, the ratio of people who know to those who don't are probably 5000 to 1. But shit, woulden't it be nice if that one guy could experience the series "Fresh" like we would want to?

I was literally unable to see Star Wars the Force Awakens for the entire theatrical run of it. I was pissed, I was sad. I'm a huge Star Wars fan. But the community literally worked so hard and were so diligent to keep spoilers from leaking out or being hinted at that I was able to enjoy the movie as it was supposed to be enjoyed, going in completely blind. And it was awesome. And I saw people bitch and moan about it, "The movie has been out for two months now if you haven't seen it you aren't actually a fan" or "Lets be honest it's not like people don't know by now". And it was just lame to hear that, because I can't express how much it meant to me that the entirety of the movie was preserved for me so I could enjoy the occasion in my life.

So yunno, just do it. Because you never know.

It doesn't matter how well known it is. It's the first rule in the sub. Some people won't know at all, especially people new to Final Fantasy as a whole. It's the same wth Vader. Not everyone knows and there are some people who would prefer to find out on their own. It's not a lot to ask to have a little respect and to take the 2 seconds to put in a spoiler tag.

It doesn't matter how well known it is.

Well the rule says "Please tag major spoilers," and something being well-known even outside of the Final Fantasy fanbase would make it not a major spoiler so yes, that does matter. I'm baffled as to how this even a discussion?

[–]Thonet [

I'm pretty sure major doesnt refer to how well known it is, but rather to what impact it has on someones experience in the game. Therefor it IS a major spoiler and could potentionally ruin it for someone.

This is a major spoiler.

Do you have anything to back this up other than repeating that you believe that this is a major spoiler?

What the fuck? It's the most memorable scene in the whole game. How is it NOT a major spoiler?

It was also literally on the back of the box in Europe.

Because apparently since it's 20 years old everyone has to have played it.

What a moron lol.

Don't bother arguing with that guy. If he doesn't think something like this is a major spoiler, then he's probably not thinking at all.

You gotta be kidding. My own little brother hates RPGs, has never played a single Final Fantasy in his life and even he knows Aeris gets shishkebabbed. It's as shocking a revelation as finding out Star Trek is set in space.

We should tag all pictures of any characters then. Since you only start with cloud and barret, seeing a picture of tifa or aeris spoils that they are in the game.

Go ahead and march into your local kindergarten class and enlighten them with the truth about the Santa Claus conspiracy. It's more than 150 years old and rather well known.

"Her death is well known" means nothing to my 13 year old niece when I'm handing to her what's considered one of the best narratives of the previous gaming generation. "Darth Vader is Luke's father" means nothing to my immigrant friend who grew up without access to Western cinema.

There are people from many walks of life waiting to experience this for the first time, and not all of them should find out this way.

[–]ELI5_MODS_SUCK_ASS [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Appericiate you saying this. I posted this elsewhere in the thread, but I want to add it here as well.

So it means a lot. Even if the ratio of people who know to those who don't is 5000 to 1 it's worth it. It's such a neat thing when it works out and people are able to experience these things as they were meant to be seen.

Can confirm. I didn't play Final Fantasy VII until I was in high school, which was around 2010. Seeing as how some people i knew did spoil it for me, well, it sort of took away from the impact of the scene.

Snape kills Dumbledore, Bruce Willis was already dead the whole time, Soylent Green is people, Ripley survives, the SEALs get Bin Laden, E.T. goes home, Kyle Reese is John Connor's father, and it was Earth all along.

This sub is embarrassing. Are people forgetting the fact that VII is getting remade? Which means NEW people will be playing it? I'm sorry you got downvoted.

protip: using a second account to sock puppet for support is generally frowned upon in most communities

I don't even know who that is, but I'm not using my main account because it'll just get bombarded like him.

20 years ago it was a well known spoiler and you didn't see people bitching about it then. We have a culture full of people who love to whine about spoilers anymore. It's getting worse, too.

This is ridiculous, then everything should have a spoiler tag. Fuck this post.

What competition?

[–]Sea-Salt [

Aeris wanted to boink Cloud because he reminded her of Zack; it was pretty obvious the attraction was there.

What she wants don't put her in the running.

[–]Realik [

Sepiroth did not kill her thought,... Also cloud loves Tifa. he had feelings for Aries yes, but that was more this nostalgia, like he was suppose to love her cause of his delusions. Yes, he was close to her. they have a connection. But the romance is with Tifa

How Cloud feels about Tifa is determined by how you play the game. If you show a lot of affection towards her, then yeah, you're right. If you don't, though, then it just ends up becoming a very awkward one-sided relationship with Tifa having unrequited feelings for Cloud.

There isn't a definitive answer to who Cloud has the strongest feelings for, since it's entirely determined by the player.

Exactly. Isn't the fact that there's an affection point system that determines specific scenes (the gold saucer date, the highwind scene) enough proof that Cloud loves neither character more? I've been trying to say this for ages.

Tifa and Cloud end up together, there is the under the airship scene and advent children to prove this.

As I already said, the outcome of the airship scene varies depending on how the player goes about playing the game. Tifa's feelings for Cloud can either be requited or unrequited, and Advent Children doesn't really go into much detail one way or the other on the matter. It just kinda leaves the nature of their relationship ambiguous.

[–]Realik [

Well he is with her in AC, so nope. Sorry. Aries loves Zack. The creator of the game says so too. It's not really up for debate

[–]Kheron [

Aries

You keep saying that. Who's Aries?

Other than the two of them sometimes hanging out when he's not going MIA for weeks at a time to brood over Aerith being dead, there's no real implications one way or the other as to whether or not they are a thing in Advent Children. Also, I'd like to see a source where Yoshinori Kitase says that.

[–]Ekaba [

Spoilers wow no respect

Yeah dude, I felt the same way when somebody spoiled titanic. The ship was UNSINKABLE!!

I'm watching Band of brothers in honor of memorial day. Hope we beat the germans!
