National Government. Sounds way more interesting than it is

Sounds awesome, elaborate!

I try to avoid too much detail on public forums and social media as you never know what trolls can dig up.

At the moment I'm working with a government department, specialising in Human Rights. I got to meet Obama when he visited the UK in 2014 which is always nice.

That seriously sounds so fucking cool!

Thanks. It can be fun but as with all public sector jobs we get paid half what our private sector counterparts do so I'm trying to work a way there. Less interesting stories but hopefully a nicer car!

Yours sounds interesting. Got detail about it?

I work for a startup company trying to revolutionise another industry (I think we're the only tech startup aiming out product at this industry with a place in Holborn so I won't say any more for privacy reasons).

I'm working on data visualisation and algorithmic learning. Essentially developing a system that can display the data that we have of customers behaviour patterns to a simple user interface (graphs, summaries, etc.) so that sales people can use it in their pitches.

It's quite complicated, actually, because we have to try to isolate the relevant data automatically. But people can be so random!

That sounds so interesting. I understand about 1/3rd of it, but it's the kind of thing I wish I'd studied.

It's certainly a hell of a lot of fun - but it is really, really difficult at times. :)

What is it like? One of my friends recently got promoted to an Events Management position it and she loves it haha!

[–]Entrepreneur_GirlJuan Manuel Mata García 1

It's my business so I kinda have less fun than your friend does, all my employees sing about how awesome it is to work for me because of all the benefits and parties they get to go to but I'm like hahaha fuck you that's because I'm stuck doing the paper work all the damn time!

But for real, I enjoy it even though I get stuck with shittyness of it sometimes. It's my dream. I plan music festivals and club nights with all sorts of different genres of music. I get to listen to music all the time. I meet massive artists and host them, some are complete assholes some are so down to earth that we have actually played FIFA in their hotel rooms but in reality you experience that like 10 x a year!! The reality of it is 90% planning and 10% fun for me. You have to worry about each artists happiness and standards most of their demands are ridiculous! 1 famous DJ wanted nothing but Egyptian cotton everything in their hotel room from bed sheets to bathrobe etc etc. like the littlest thing that you in general wouldn't Mind the artist really does mind. You wait for days to book artists and managers are complete fucking dicks to deal with. Security (another fucking hassle) you get really dodge security firms owned by Russians wanting to protect your event and you have to let them down easy without getting threats. There are corrupt private ambulance companies as well. No jokes! The drugs issue!! Let me not even go there! You fight with sponsors as well because they pay this much to have this stage with their name on it etc etc. you basically have to think about 100 artists including 100 of your employees and another 10,000 of fans. There is so much work but when things come together in the end it's a very beautiful sight and it makes it so worth it.

I'm sure your friend enjoys it so much because she gets to promote big parties and gets free tickets and meets the Artists and the possible gift bags they get from sponsors and so on! It can be really fun but for the guys upstairs it can be rough but the rewards are huge in the end. I really enjoy it because I've always wanted to be a part of the music industry and because I threw parties in my high school days I thought that this would be a great career for me.

We have the same job?!

Yeah college/uni will only tell you so much, when you get into work go find an older guy whose been there and done everything on the plant and just learn everything you can off him.

I studied full and part time for nearly 9 years and I learn t more in 18 months of following around a bloke who had been at the plant for 40 years than I did it all that time at college.

Comp science grad unemployed O_O

[–]LDN2016Pay Attention To The Manager. 0

how is it possible to be an unemployed compsci?

just make a linkedin and you'll get 10 offers a day thrown at you.

This explains a little (http://www.theguardian.com/higher-education-network/blog/2013/sep/16/computer-science-graduates-unemployment-bme).

A lot of people study Comp Sci because of the money, and not because they actually love to write code - so they don't put in enough effort at uni. When they graduate and come to apply for jobs, they're simply not ready for the industry.

I never even realised what the money was like in Comp Sci until I finished my A-Levels, I just loved to code. So I was so passionate about it - by the time I had graduated, I had two years experience in industry (from summer internships + my placement year) and side-projects to show, so I found it quite easy to get a job as mv CV was competitive in comparison to other "I'm gonna study it for the money and not actually apply myself" students. Out of most of my colleagues who graduated a year ago - only three of us have jobs in the industry, others couldn't get them because they weren't good enough and have moved up to admin work, etc. or are unemployed.

There is also a shout that the Comp Sci degrees in England don't prep you for working life at all. It's all algorithms and theoretical work, with little to no real life context. So when you get to an interview and they ask you to do lots of practical work - you get stuck. (I was lucky because I got involved in open source when I was younger and was exposed to how software in the "real world" was written).

IMO, a comp sci degree without an industrial placement / part-time experience makes it hard to get your foot in the door.

Not implying that /u/incognito_red is one, of course. There are other factors, too - especially location and skills.
