While I agree that Schneiderlin and Herrera haven't played their best matches under us, and they may perform better under Mourinho, I do think there are big question marks in regards to:

  • Carrick's age.
  • Schweinsteiger's fitness.
  • Fellaini's everything.
  • Rooney's adaptability.
  • Mata - Well Mata isn't going to play as a central midfielder.

There are a lot of uncertainties there.

Rooneys last two games in midfield were great I think he can feature there

[–]CalimariaeSolskjaer 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

But that's the thing; the sample size is two matches.

I think "great" is a bit over the top. He was pretty good against Bournemouth, and he improved against Palace when he moved further up.

I know Mata wouldnt play as a CM, but will likely play as a number 10, or the furthest forward in a midfield 3 a la Fabregas, when jose would play Ramires and Matic behind.

None of our midfielders have been consistent. We need a player who can be.

[–]The_Lukewarm[S] -2ポイント-1ポイント  (1子コメント)

So how many of them do you think we need to get rid of. Got to make the space somewhere

[–]BarbadosDMLord Scholes 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

We will have to wait and see what happens. I don't think any of them could complain if they were let go though

[–]Saf94 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

That is 8 players for 2.5 positions

Quantity doesn't equal quality. Schneiderlin and Herrera aren't top class CM's. When the best teams in the world are fielding players like Kroos, Vidal, Pogba, Fabregas, Gundogan we won't compete with Herrera/Schneiderlin. They'll be good squad players and do well but won't take us to the top level.

I agree, but are the players we are linked with that much better. They certainlyarent the same caliber as the ones you mentioned.

Well yes.. Naingollan would be a fantastic signing and players like Andre Gomes and Joao Mario have the potential to be top players.

I just can't think of a single team that's had success without top cms, they're such a huge part of defence and attack. Look at City this season, plainly clear that Yaya's drop off form has a big contribution to their poor season - they've already signed Gundogan that's how decisively they've identified the need for a top cm

If they get their form back and stay fit, I think Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger are great and should be the starters. But if a world-class CM is available we should fight for him.

I think it will come down to how good our current cm's can perform under mourinho. I can see him not buying a cm until mid-end august too see what they are capable of

You don't have one CM who can be world class on their day, you have a few who were, but they're past it now. You need Carrick or Schweiny from 7 years ago. Schneiderlin was average at best last year, Herrera isn't consistent, Fellaini is Fellaini (think he deserves more credit for how many points he's got you in the last 2 seasons), Blind is consistently just above average, Rooney isn't a midfielder.

I do think Scheiderlin and Herrera could potentially be good midfielders, but definitely not Kroos/Pogba/Modric, or even Rakitic, level, which is what you need to be competing with.

[–]The_Lukewarm[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I totatly agree and its why i said if a world class players becomes available we should definitely go for him. I just don't think the players we have been linked with fit in that bracket.

[–]moodyswinger 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yes we still need a few centre mids, a creative one for sure.

[–]HowsTheGee 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Of course we do. Numbers mean fuck all when what we have doesn't perform. I am however looking forward to seeing how Herrera and Schneiderlin performs under Mou.

I think we 100% need another midfielder, and possibly even two.

First, Carrick and Schwein are at the tail end of their careers. I'm not sure if either will be here next season - I could see Mourinho moving Schwein on, and obviously Carrick is gone unless we offer a contract. Personally, I'd offer Carrick a contract but I don't think Schwein has a lot left in the tank.

Secondly, I'm doubtful of Blind's ability to play CM in the EPL. He has decent passing ability, but that's coming from CB without much pressure being placed upon him. He hasn't impressed when in CM in the EPL, and that's without mentioning his obvious physical shortcomings in that position. He is a good utility player but I don't see him taking our midfield forward.

Thirdly, we can look at Fellaini and Mata. I like Fellaini, and I think Mourinho could make use of his unique qualities. He is, however, always going to be a bench option. Mata is not really good enough for our team - I'm personally not a fan, and have found him very disappointing since his move. He is limited to playing the 10, but is physically poor, is not an impressive dribbler, and is very one-footed. He will also be competing with Rooney for that spot (I assume), and there will only be one winner. In my opinion, Mata will not be here next season, and if he is it will be in a limited role.

Fourthly, Herrera and Schneiderlin. I think they are both good players that just had a poor season. I can see Schniederlin being a fixture in our midfield next season - could be paired wiht another DM if we are looking to lock up and play on the counter, and could partner a box-to-box player in other games. Herrera is a bit more difficult - not yet sold on him in a midfield two, but could be handy in a midfield 3 if paired with more defensive players if we're looking to control the middle.

Finally, you've got Rooney. You can talk about him at length: he will be playing either 10 or CM, he is getting older, he is on a downward trend, etc. I personally don't think we should be building around him.

So, you've really got a pretty lacking midfield: Schwein, Carrick and Mata may leave, and question marks over Blind, Herrera and maybe Schneiderlin. Definitely need to upgrade.

Seeing as Carrick and Schweinsteiger will play bit part roles, we will have Herrera, Fellaini, and Schneiderlin who will be our "full timers" and natural at it along with Blind likely coming from defense to play more midfield this season on. They are great... when in form. Mourinho has a tendency to put a lot of faith in certain players and play them very often. Can you, if you were Mourinho, put that much trust in any of the players after the last few season? They all blow hot or cold very easily and it is hard to tell if there is a pattern to it. Rooney and Mata will have to play roles in front of these guys even if they play every so often and they themselves are inconsistent.

We need a Mr. Consistent who can keep hold of the talented but extremely shaky boat that is the current Man Utd team.

But I bet Mourinho will sell someone. Mourinho may offload Mata but even before that I could see him letting go Fellaini for someone who actually dominates the midfield with his physical build. As decent as he was this past season, I personally hate the type of play-style he has and requires the rest of the team to play around. It's something I'd expect from a midtable team, rather than a team looking to play in Europe and regularly compete for things.

[–]FeicarsinnBlind 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Carrick and Schweinsteiger are both well into their 30's and can't be relied upon to have meaningful roles over the course of the season. Fellaini isn't good enough, Blind probably isn't good enough to be a starting central midfielder (plenty of room for a jack of all trades though), Rooney is a forward, and Mourinho doesn't particularly like Mata. So that leaves you with Herrera and Schneiderlin. Is that a good enough duo to win the league and compete in Europe? Based on last season absolutely not.

[–]The_Lukewarm[S] -2ポイント-1ポイント  (0子コメント)

So how many of these are we selling ? Theres no point keeping a load of players if they aren't playing. If Carrick signs an extension i cant see us getting rid of anyone apart from Fellaini.
