Tell President Obama: No to the nuclear cruise missile

President Obama has proposed an overhaul of the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal that will cost more than $1 trillion over the next three decades. This overhaul includes funding for a new nuclear-tipped cruise missile that experts say is dangerous, unnecessary and expensive.

Dear Mr. President,

In 2009, you spoke in Prague about America’s commitment to “seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” You spoke of American leadership, vowing to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy and urge others to do the same. But it seems as though your commitment to this vision has wavered.

I was extremely disappointed to hear of your proposal to overhaul America’s nuclear weapons arsenal at a cost of more than $1 trillion over the next three decades. And I was even more shocked to learn that your FY2017 budget proposal to Congress is expected to include funding for the design and build of a new nuclear-tipped cruise missile -- the Long Range Standoff (LRSO) weapon. This new cruise missile is unnecessary, expensive and dangerous.

Advances in U.S. conventional forces have eliminated the need for a new nuclear cruise missile. And the proposed cost of this missile is between $20-$30 billion -- that’s money we don’t have for a weapon we don’t need. Furthermore, because these missiles can be launched without warning, the likelihood of miscalculation or escalation to nuclear war is huge.

I strongly urge you to lead us to a safer, more secure future by abandoning plans in your FY2017 budget request to fund the new nuclear-tipped cruise missile. Doing so would in no way diminish the security of the United States. On the contrary, it would reduce the risk of nuclear weapons use and lay the foundation for a global movement to abandon these weapons altogether.

In your final year as president, I challenge you to ask yourself: On which side of history will you be remembered? Will you compromise the security of the United States and the world by funding a new, dangerous nuclear cruise missile? Or will you make the world a safer place by holding true to your promise to boldly reduce our bloated nuclear stockpiles and lay a strong foundation for a world without nuclear weapons?
