The title says it all: How do you get custom Shortcut Keys to continue to work after you re-login to Windows 7?

I can easily assign a shortcut key combination to any shortcut by right clicking on it, selecting Properties, and then typing a key into the "Shortcut Key" field, which automatically appends CTRL + ALT + to the front of it.

After making a new one of these and then trying it, it works great. But if I log out and log back in (or restart, or shutdown and restart, etc.) this Shortcut Key gets ignored and no longer works. The assignment is still there in the properties of the icon
in question, but it simply doesn't get paid attention when the key combination is pressed.

I loved being able to make dozens of shortcuts to different folders in Explorer, or URL shortcuts, or in some cases, applications themselves, and I'd love to get this functionality back. And while I do leave my system up and running just about all of the time,
I certainly don't want to go and have to remake all of my shortcuts every time I need to reboot for this or that Windows Update.

Though this goes back to 3 years ago, but it might happen for others too.

I did the built-in admin. account mentioned here, did not work for me.

My case:
- Win. 7 pro.
- suddenly I found that the 'custom' shortcut keys where not working (in startup menu).
- Only those that I have assigned myself w/ Alt.+Ctrl.+'a letter' did not work, the windows shortcut keys like Ctrl.+C .... were OK.
- If I cleared the key-- pressed OK -- thenreassigned it again, it worked, but again stopped after reboot.

What solved mine: I did a "diagnostic startup" surprisingly found that the keys worked!! So then I did a "normal startup" to loadeverything,after thatI changed the startup as I wanted it to be.

So seems that a service or something was not loading caused the problem.

Application shortcuts should be on desktop or start menu only for the keyto work!If you remove the shortcut w/ key from both of those locations, the key does not work!

My shortcut keys quit working on my custom shortcuts I have created. I created the shortcuts andtheshortcutitselfstill works when you double click it but the key combo I input for the shortcut key quits working after I reboot. Here's what I have done so far to help you guys narrow down what might cause this:1) tried a clean boot state by using msconfig and unchecked load startup items - this still returned the same result.2) I went to my office computer which I just upgraded to Win 7 also and it has the exact same issue3) I created a new user account and they work perfect on the new user account with all of the startup items loadedI was just thinking of moving my user files over to the new account and deleting the old one butI sure would like to be able to narrow down the issue. Any thoughts on this?

I should comment that the shortcut hotkeys don't work unless windows can recognize them on boot up. Ihad to leavethem on my desktopfor them tocontinue to work. I read another forum where a guy created a folder in the
start menu userfolder\appdata\roaming\microsoft\start menu\_hotkeys The computer will now read and recognize the hotkeys without having to keep them on the desktop.

My company has recently acquired AutoCAD 2000. We are setting up
the shortcut keys (by editing the acad.pgp file).
Does anyone out there know how to create a alias for TWO line commands?
For instance, we are trying to make it so that typing "ZD" will shortcut
to "Zoom Dynamic". Unfortunately, the alias will only let you do one
command, and since doing a zoom dynamic requires two line commands, we
have not been able to figure this out.
If anyone can help us out, it would be much appreciated!

exists, haven't used it since R11...

You're thinking of "realtime". Dynamic zoom is different.

In the latest 9860 build it seems the Windows keys are broken. For example if I used to press Win key Up it would maximize. Win Key Right Arrow (twice) would move it from Screen A to Screen B. Now the only thing the Win key does it calls the
start menu. Is this broke?

I need the shortcut keys for Google Earth - like Page Up, Page Down etc, but the new Apple wireless keyboard hasn't got the numeric keypad.

Are there alternative shortcut keys for Page Up/Down? Or can I programme any of the Function keys to do that instead?

I see nothing in Google Earth's keyboard shortcuts that require using the number keys, so I'm at a loss to understand why you can;'t use the arrow keys. Google Earth-Help-Keyboard Shortcuts and do a search for page up, etc. BTW, I only use wired keyboards w/numeric pads, so can't test.

I'm using VS 2010 on Windows 8 Pro and lost my F5 - F8 shortcut to debug. F5 goes to Metro search, F8 goes to settings. How can I get back to WIN 7 type settings.

It's the damn FN key on the Surface keyboard!!! Apparently the function keys will not work out of the box independently of the FN key. That is a huge relief to me... I may be able to remap the keyboard. Put this in the lesson's learned cabinet. Thanks for

I create shortcuts on the desktop for all my important folders. For example, C-Drive, Program Files, Program Files(86), etc. In creating the shortcut in Win 7, the name of the shortcut is succeeded by " - shortcut". This is annoying to say the least.
For previous versions of Office there were apps such as Super Toys from Microsoft that offered relief. I can no linger find such apps for Word 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on the shortcut and select Rename. Then edit the name of the shortcut to suit your fancy.

Thanks Doug. I am familiar with that route, but that means I must rename every shortcut ... every time! In previous versions of Win, there was a folder option that if checked precluded the term "Shortcut" being assigned. There were also other apps that
provided the same function. I was looking for something that replicated that previous capability.

I'm currently testing the Google Chrome OS Cr48 device and I'm experiencing a few issues with the LogMeIn plug-in for Chrome.

The issues I have found are related to common shortcut keys such as cut, copy and paste but also includes Ctrl + w and Alt + F4. The shortcut keys do not transmit to the remote Win 7 PC when connected via Chrome OS. I have confirmed that the same shortcut keys transmit to the remote Win 7 PC when connected via Chrome browser on Windows. I have also confirmed that both the Chrome OS plug-in and the Chrome Browser plug-in are using the same settings.

I am unable to determine if this is an issue with the LogMeIn plug-in or with the Cr48 implementation of Flash so I'm reporting this issue both here and with Google.

Please let me know if there is any debugging information I can provide to help solve this issue and I will dig it up and provide it.

I am experiencing the same issues with my Chrome as well. Ctrl+C does not work, ctrl+X does however, so I often end up doing cut, paste, paste to do my text copying. hi is there any other way to disabled the shortcut keys in oracle forms 10g during runtime? i dont want to use this keys..i use my triggers of code in a commnand button...i know its possible by Putting A Null code in every key event. e.g Delete Record ( CTRL + UP) it will ignore the trigger...all i want is to disable all keys//

The standard way in forms is the other way round. You put your logic in the triggers, then just execute that triggers come the command buttons. e.g. put the exeute-query-logic in the KEY-EXEQRY-trigger, if you have a button to execute a query, put
DO_KEY('EXECUTE_QUERY');

The Fn shortcut keys are no no longer functioning, ie the ones that make the screen larger and turn volume up and down by holding Fn and a function key. Last thing I think =I did that could have effected this was downloading a BIOS update from VAIO update, but surely that shouldnt be a problem....any ideas?

Or are you talking about larger fonts, maybe speech that you didn't ask for, etc? Those are part of the Accessibility Options, and can be enabled/disabled through Control Panel Ease of Access Center.

If you have Skype installed, disable the Skype add-ons in Internet Explorer:

Within Internet Explorer, click Tools / the cog icon and select Manage Add-ons. In the list of items, select the Skype addon(s) and then click Disable. Restart your browser and Excel and test if the problem persists.

The shortcut keys for Cut, Copy, and Paste work but shortcut keys for By Word and By Name does not work.

The shortcut keys are hooked up using the control properties, and none of the shortcuts are used anywhere else.

I use Google calendar, and want to activate my already created (and pinned to start) shortcut by pressing the windows key, and typing cal, then pressing enter just like I did in win 7, and win 8 before the 8.1 update.
Now, post update, cal finds loads of unwanted stuff, but not my Google calendar shortcut. I have to keep typing calen before it appears.
Is there some way to customise which apps appear when searching? Ideally I would like it to appear, and be able to move it to the top of the list so it's the default option...
Yes, I know I could create icons and keyboard shortcuts, but I would like this to be possible for all my applications, and for me it's a lot faster to press 3 keys than to move to the mouse.

When I want to SEARCH for something, it's because I don't want to take my mind off what I'm doing and concentrate on finding a tool.
Even though Microsoft doesn't want to face fact, there's a gulf between thinking stuff up that
actually works better than thingsdid before and coming up with random stuff that's just
different. Nowadays Microsoft seems to think the latter is sufficient. The fashion industry is based on new and different is better. A more useless and wastefulentity than the fashion industry there has never been.

Running WIN 8 preview on separate partition until I decide if it's worth it to upgrade. Keyboard is an HP enhanced with special function keys that control drive open/close, play/stop/search/mail shortcut/etc. Some of those keys work as intended, others
do no. Specifically the DVD drive control keys do NOT work when in WIN 8 but function fine in Win 7. Also, in Win8 the open/close button on the COMPUTER itself do not open/close the drive doors for loading DVD/CD, etc. I've run all the suggested fixes I
can find -- check for new/updated drivers, reinstall drivers, etc.
Can anyoneadvise if this problem will go away if I update Win 7 to Win 8 rather than run Win 8 on a separate partition or come up with a solution to get it working on the separate Win 8 partition so I can continue evaluation of Win 8? Appreciate any advice
possible.

Wired Keyboard; Model HP KB-0630; Status: working properly; updating: tried both Device Mgr and HP;

Device Mgr indicating it is most current driver; HP site doesn't even list that keyboard.
Tried the suggestion on Compatibility mode but no change in status; (same keys work and same special keys have on effect).
What I have detected is that on the WIN 7 partition the driver is shown as an HP driver 1.0.7.1 dated 9/7/2006 and on the WIN 8 partition it's a Microsoft driver. I suspect that the MS driver is more of a generic driver and doesn't have support for the special
keys that HP built in to it's driver for the Media Center PC that it's supporting.
I've tried to copy the HP driver from the WIN7 partition to the WIN8 partition driver folder but it won't let me do so even with an Administrator function. I can't change the permissions in WIN8 for some reason, or I'm missing some step.
I have found out that I can get the drive doors to open if I go to Computerand Click on the specific drive.
Any thoughts as to IF I do the full install of WIN8(I already havepurchased the upgrade version win WIN8 Pro) on the main partition of my computer will that overwrite the driver or will itkeep the original HP version of thekeyboard driver?

Iam trying prevent users from accessinglogoff, lock,shutdown etc actions from their desktop . In win XP this was easy. However, in Win 7 the logoff is always presented on new start menu power button action. i can remove logoff IF i allow users
to access shutdown command. if i also remove access to shutdown then the logoff is back in power button actions.
So this leads me insituation where i need to allow users to either logoff or shutdown the computer. For some reason I cannot prevent both.
Group Policy settingsworks correctly in CTRL-ALT-DEL menu but not on new start menu power button.
i have configured following settings:
user settings/admin templates/Start menu and taskbar/remove logoff from start menu: enabled
user settings/admin templates/Start menu and taskbar/remove and prevent access to shutdown,restart ...: enabled
Tried to set power button default action to restart - logoff is default if shutdown/restart is prevented by other policy setting

2 days back, I received my Win 7 Home Premium OS from microsoft store.

I had Windows Vista OS provided by Sony when I bought this model in 2005 ( VGN-NR160E/T).

After installing Win 7 by a clean install option, some of the Fn keys like brightness (F5/F6) are not working.
Also, S1 and AV Mode, along with keys (F10 - Magnify, F12 - Hibernate) are not working.

Only Volume keys, Num lock, Scroll lock are working after installing sony drivers in a sequence.

Is there a step by step process to get this working?
I don't see any software in the start-Programs- section except Sony Control Center.

called up Sony Support and got a standard response saying Win 7 provided by Sony will only work.

Client is Win 7 Home, Server is Win 2003 Server. This is not a domain. Folders are shared on the server side. A shortcut to the shared folder is placed on the Win 7 desktop. The shortcuts disappear randomly. Neither Client or Server has rebooted.
Additionally and possibly related, shared printers on the Win 2003 server cease to work until a reboot of the Win 7 client occurs.

I'm running an app in XP Mode (because it won't install on Win 7) that uses the Ctrl-Alt-Left and Ctrl-Alt-Right key combinations, but these are being intercepted by Virtual PC. Is there any way I can remap/disable the shortcuts in XP Mode so that the
app gets the keys instead?

CtrlAltLeft is a pretty core VM key, so not sure if you can change it. Is there a way to change them in the application?
What you can try is going to virtual machine settings and selectappropriate option for 'Keyboard'. There you can chose where to send Widows key combinations such as AltTab, but there is no list of key combinations you can redirect. I'm not sure
if CtrlAltLeft is part of it.

Recently my keyboard shortcuts for the volume, dimming and brightening the screen, and dimming or brightening the keyboard don't respond. Also the Keyboard itself is not lighting up. I haven't spilled anything on the computer. Also my "use as standard function keys" setting is unchecked. Please help.

I was on the phone all day with an Apple support person and paid to have them run through all of the trouble shooting options with me. Nothing fixed the issue. I was very frustrated but eventually figure it out on my own.
I turned my computer of. Then powered it back on while pressing the option button. Then clicked on Machintoch HD, then clicked re-install mountain line. It went through the installation process for about an hour then my machine restarted. Now I have my keyboard light back, the sound control buttons work and the dimming and brightening of the screen buttons work also. I have no idea what casued this but it was very frustrating.

HP dv6-6033cl powers down but then restarts in 4 sec by itself.

The laptop boots just fine into win 7.

After selecting ShutDown from the win 7 start menu and the power

LED goes out my dv6-6033cl powers back up by itself in 4 sec.

I have done a complete reset, removed all power sources

and held the power button for 60 sec. Same problem.

I ran all the diagnostics from the F2 menu and they all passed.

I have disabled the " Disable automatic restart on system failure option" from the F8 option menu, After

letting it boot into win 7 then selecting ShutDown from the win 7 start menu and the power

LED goes out my laptop powers back up by itself in 4 sec

I have removed the HD and powered up the laptop, after receiving error no

HD present I powered down and the pc powered up by itself in 4 seconds.

I downloaded the bios and re-flashed the bios, still same problem.

I pressed the power button to power up the laptop and immediately removed the keyboard

cable, after win 7 came up I powered down the laptop using the mouse and selecting ShutDown from the win 7 start menu, same problem.

I removed the cable for the touch pad, powered up the laptop. After

I told the bios to reset to factory defaults, same problem

I regret that my previous suggestions did not help.

Does it restart if you are just running on battery power and not AC, or with AC only and no battery installed?

If it does not auto restart on just battery power, I would try a different adapter.

Although I do not think it is software, you can try this.Change what happens when you press the power button on your computer.

You could try leaving the RTC battery out for about 24 hours, just to be sure the capacitors have fully drained.

You can try a full recovery again and if that does not work, I can only suggest contacting HP support for assistance.

Hello,Have you tried to install the drivers in compatibility mode?  Also check the Sticky Thread for tips on how to force install drivers.  If none of these options work then you will have to wait for a driver update from HP to get it fully compatible with Windows 7.Regards, ~Alex T.~

When you create a shortcut to do something, it is supposed to be possible to define a short key (combination) that invokes the shortcut. I have a batch file that erases the contents of a folder I use for holding temporary files when grading students' work,
and I want to create a shortcut that runs that batch file. Most recently, I put the batch file and shortcut to it in a folder on my desktop and defined Ctrl+Shft+G as the shortcut key. It worked fine until I rebooted the computer today, but after the reboot,
the shortcut did nothing. I searched for answers and found an article from earlier versions (up through Vista) of Windows that said the shortcut had to be in the Desktop or a couple of other Start menu related places for the shortcut key to work, so I created
new shortcut on my Desktop that runs my batch file. That new shortcut did not work, either. So I'm looking for answers as to why rebooting would kill a working shortcut key combination, and what the requirements are to create shortcuts that have working shortcut
keys.

I used a USB controlled power bar on my Win-XP system and it worked fine by powering down my screen and other devices when I shut down Win-XP PC.

I built a new system installing Win-7 but find that the devices are not powered down on Win 7 shutdown. Is there a setting that I have to change to enable this feature?

I have found partial list of the shortcut keys by searching this discussion group, but I know they were not complete. For example, control+c, control+x and control+v were not in the lists. I think these are Windows shortcut keys available in every program
unless reassigned. I am trying to set up shortcut keys for some macros, but don't want to overwrite something that is already assigned. Does such a list exist? I need at least five shortcut keys.

On a related question, if I reassign shortkeys key to macros stored in a worksheet, and that worksheet is not active, will the shortcut keys activate the macros or the original functions?

Reinstalled Win 7 prof. again, installed all necessary drivers for graphic, sound, touchpad, etc, plus latest Value Added Package for my model, and shortcuts (pressin FN on keyboard + F1-F12) does not work. But when i point mouse to up of my screen and i click those buttons by mouse - they work.

But it's irritating to minimize game or movie to change brightness of screen, or when batteries from my bluetooth mouse are gone - i can not turn on touch pad with FN+F9 shortcut.

Tried also (before format) using Flash Card and some other stuff which was working on Vista 64, but they do not work on Win 7 64.

Any solution yet for that? Seen couple topics about that but now they are gone, or i'm blind?

I think your statement based only on the FN button issue and therefore you are disappointed…

I can tell you that I’ve got a two different Toshiba notebooks and the FN buttons are working even after new Win 7 installation.

The FN buttons are controlled by Toshiba Flash Card Support Utility and this tool does not depend on notebook model. I’ve got a old Satellite A series and I used the Flash Card Utility released for Sat L500 series. I installed VAP (valued added package) also from L500 series and then Flash Card.

Buttons work and there is no prob.

One tip - there are a lot of threads about this theme and you would find it faster in the past if you would use the search option in this forum...

My problem is similar to Raynman's but on a desktop (HP with Win 7 Home Premium), so it isn't related to closing a laptop. My games shortcut icons sometimes disappear, plus a shortcut tobroadband Internet connection. It doesn't happen except when booting
up or waking up, but it doesn't happen often either. just unpredictably. Only way to restore the missing icons is to recreate each one. I've seen this behavior in previous Windows versions back to 3.1. By this time Windows really ought to include a desktop-memorizing
and restoring function, not just for icon positions but for the icons themselves, and not just for system icons.

To pin the Switch Between Windows shortcut to the Taskbar, you can take the following steps to create the shortcut and pin it to the Taskbar
or QuickLaunch bar:

1.
Right-click on the desktop, click
New - Shortcut .
2.
Type
C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe DwmApi #105 into the Type the location of the item box, and then click
Next .
3.
Type a name for the shortcut such as
Switch Between Windows into the Type a name for the shortcut box, and then click
Finish .
4.
Right-click on the created new shortcut, and then click

Up until a couple months ago, Windows 7 used to allow me to drag a file to a toolbar shortcut on the taskbar and open the file (e.g. drag a.txt file to Notepad shortcut). This no longer works, even when holding down the SHIFT key. I thought this was a
huge improvement over XP and I used this feature constantly. I open the same file type(s) with several different applications, so assigning the extension to open for a single application does not help. Guess I will need to populate my 'Send to' menu.

I created another user and the same thing happens. I can drag and drop on a folder or the recycle bin, but not an application. One other thing that I noticed that doesn't happen on my other Windows 7 PCs is that when I drag and drop something onto my desktop
(from somewhere other than the desktop and without 'arrange to grid' enabled), it actually drops about a full icon distance above where I dropped it. These are major annoyances, but not enough to make me want to reinstall the OS.

I am trying to edit an Adjustment Brush in the Develop module.

I want to fine tune the coverage area for the brush.

I can use Ctrl +/- keys to zoom in/out,

and the Page Up/Down keys to scroll up and down when zoomed in,

but there does not seem to be any way to scroll right and left when zoomed in.

The key shortcut lists I've seen don't list anything for scroll left and right.

Does anyone know how to scroll the image left and right when zoomed in ?

Yes, there is a driver which helps in launching Windows Mobility Center. You can try uninstalling, restarting the computer and reinstalling the Quickset drivers.

To uninstall the quick set follow the below instruction:

1)Click Start, type Programs and Features and press enter.

2)In the Programs and Features window, right click Quickset64, click Change/Uninstall.

3)Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation.

4)Restart the computer.

When I went to bed last night, everything seemed to be working fine. As usual, I left my pc on with the applications closed. When I came to the pc (hp desktop running Win 7 Home Premium) this morningit was totally non-responsive. I used the power button
to force a shutdown and attempted to restart. It hung at the initial screen. I repeated forced shutdowns and attempted restarts, using the various "f" keys to do a system check, etc. Some "f" keys worked; others (like system setup) did not. Eventually
the pc started. I'm leery about shutting it down again, for fear that I won't be able to get it to restart.

Try the Methods provided below and check if the issue persists.
Method 1:
Verify that your device is allowed to wake the computer
To resolve this issue for, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Open the Keyboard control panel item. To do so try the steps provided below.
a) In Windows Vista or Windows 7, Click Start
b) Type keyboard in the Start Search box,

I would like to tell you that firstly hold up the Power Button till the time the windows is shutting down screen not disappeared after that again press the power button computer bootup and if the boot screen shows some option like
Safe mode, Safe mode with networking, Normal boot, Last time good configuration
choose the Last time good configuration once the computer boots up follow the steps which are given below:-
1. Check your computer for virus infection.
2. Check the latest Windows Updates and install them(if any).
3. Clean all the temporary files and also run the disk clean up utility for open disk cleanup utiliy click on start and type in search box Disk Cleanup.
4. Check your hardware device driver if the hardware device require and updation then do it.
5. If you well aware of how to disable the startup then open the msconfig and do the Clean boot.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Shutdown your computer again.
If the problem not fixed, please provide more details of your computer hardware information and explain me more details of your issue.
