Huh.. I just refuse to buy it and explain it's marketing. Fixed a lot of annoying things "all" kids do. It also makes it that much more special when he does get some crap with a movie on it.

She's two. "Marketing" is not a reason in her reality yet.

You mean your kid doesn't have the basic concepts of consumerism down at 2?!

Child abuse!!!

/s, obviously.

But in a few short years it will be and a smart parent start talking about that stuff form the time kids are small so that by the time they are older they actually get it instead of rolling their eyes at you.

No, but she is being marketed too and they absorb everything. If you label commercialism for what it is and use terms she can understand she can grasp that just because it has a certain picture on it doesn't make it a good choice.

Your example as a parent is the most powerful tool you have and this comment is by far the best advice in this thread.

People underestimate how easily kids adapt to the world. This works on an emotional level and applies to toddlers too. If you reward them by giving them that thing that they happen to like right now or "everybody thinks is cool" (i.e. what has the best marketing team), they will also want whatever next thing too and the cycle continues. If you instead show that it's the same or better thing cheaper and just without the picture with your own choice and repeat that pattern they will catch on.

And if they do enjoy the thing being marketed, they can of course enjoy it as a separate movie/toy/whatever without involving the crappy food in that enjoyment.

Your kids are people too, not a game you need to win.

Doesn't have to be just one or the other.

"We aren't going to buy this because it's crap (feel free to alter delivery of this line to be age appropriate) but I know you like pictures of Princess Ana. So let's get some bags with pictures of Princess Ana and we can choose some good food together to put in the bags." Everyone wins and your kid might actually listen to your message rather than fixating on how "unfair" you're being.

Yes!!!

And they don't become resentful of this stuff either. My son gets upset when the tv lies because he feels bad for the kids who think commercials tell the truth. It's cute. He is so involved at home and making his own versions of stuff. I'm proud of him!!

Huh.. I guess that's one method, if you're really okay with participating in a capitalist culture. We grow our own food, or what we can't grow, we barter for. And of course, we always ask the plants if they're willing to provide for us and be eaten. I wouldn't want to infringe on their autonomy, you know?

Avoiding all that materialism is another way to fix a lot of annoying things "all" kids (and parents!) do! Just one suggestion!

I know you are trying to tease me, but do you know how much joy kids get from growing their own food? From knowing the flour we make our bread from his dad grew on the farm (we aren't that crazy, but we are farmers and know where our wheat goes). From being 8 and knowing he can make bread or pancakes or cookies?

I'm torn. I can't decide if you're being serious -- in which case I'm wondering how the plants answer your question about their willingness, or if you're being facetious.

Love that you're getting downvoted for actually parenting your kid.

I can't believe people are downvoting this. Down voting is not for things you disagree with idiots. Read the rules: "Basics include upvoting comments that add to discussions and downvoting off topic comments. Please don’t downvote people just because you disagree, diverse opinions are what makes our subreddit great."
