John Stones is determined to leave Everton this summer - sparking a bidding war between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
The England defender is wanted by both Manchester clubs despite a difficult season at Goodison Park.
It is understood Everton privately accept he will leave - and it is now a case of selling to the highest bidder, with a fee in excess of £45m expected to be enough to prise him away.
Guardiola has identified Stones, along with Aymeric Laporte, as a player to build Manchester City’s fragile defence around.
Incoming Manchester United manager Mourinho, meanwhile, is ready to resume his pursuit of the 21-year-old after failing to sign him for Chelsea last summer.
The Manchester rivals are not the only interested parties, with Barcelona and Chelsea also targeting him.
Barca were believed to be leading the chase for him earlier this season after making it clear they are determined to take him to the Nou Camp.
But sources close to the player suggested in recent weeks that Chelsea were favourites to complete a deal for one of the most sought-after centre backs in Europe.
Both United and City are hopeful the chance to stay in the north west will tip the balance in their favour - setting up the first battle between Mourinho and Guardiola in their new roles.
