[–]relic2279 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

is there any precedent in a predominantly western studio such as WB funding a foreign adaption in order to ensure they secure the rights later down the track?

Warner Brothers has an entire Japanese division that do a lot of movies, and a lot of anime live-action adaptations (the live-action Death Note films were a WB production). I recently watched the live-action version of the anime "Black Butler" and it was actually quite good, I was expecting a low grade B-film and was shocked that it could have held its own against your run-of-the-mill Hollywood flick. I was also surprised to start the movie and see the Warner Brothers logo/entrance animation. Regarding the movie; I thought the acting was actually quite good, especially by the butler. And I was genuinely surprised by the twist towards the end. Didn't see it coming. Then again, I haven't seen the anime or read the manga so I don't know how it stacks up. I haven't watched an anime in a long, long time...

Edit: Here's the subtitled trailer if anyone's interested.

Any other major corporation would have put pressure on the mods and have this post removed by now.

Believe it or not, that almost never happens. I'm sure it's happened before on reddit, but I've been a default moderator for 6+ years now (of 2 of reddit's largest subreddits) and I've yet to receive a message from a company asking me to remove a post or comment. It just doesn't happen.

My guess is that if it does happen, they send the message to reddit's admins/owners instead. I mean, if I'm a company and I'm pissed, I'm not going to dink around with the volunteer mods, I'm going to go to the people who may be financially impacted by my business (or ire). Though, we the mods would notice a hugely popular thread getting yanked from public view and we would raise a big stink if the admins tried to randomly censor a post. So truth be told, while shenanigans may take place from time to time, it's very rare and not as common or as pervasive as most seem to believe.

Sigh... This isn't going to be popular on reddit but...

As someone who worked as a pizza delivery driver from age 18-22ish, in an area where it seemed like everyone had a massive dog, I can kinda empathize with the police slightly (not the shooting of dogs of course, but the general experience of dealing with a stranger's pets). It's one thing to shoot someone's tiny little poodle that you can brush away without looking, but when you have a massive Rottweiler or Pit bull charging at you, you don't know if it's mean, friendly, going for your throat or what. Having a big unpredictable (potentially hostile) animal charging at you is incredibly frightening, I don't care who you are. It's even more so when you're not expecting it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's ok to shoot pets, far from it. I'm saying I can empathize with the whole experience since it's happened to me many, many times. I've had dogs bite my legs, arms, ankles and trap me in rooms and even in my car a few times (there were multiple dogs, didn't want to back out and run over one of them). You wouldn't believe the number of people who simply weren't responsible when it came to their pets, and that's when they knew someone was coming over (they ordered the darn pizza and didn't put their hostile dog away). I imagine it's even worse for the police who people may not have called or be expecting.

I was a dog lover before I started delivering pizza, I even had a dog of my own till it died of bone cancer (a Doberman). After my Pizza delivery career I became a cat person. :P

Yeah, I don't expect us to win very many games this year but at the same time, I'm genuinely excited with the way our team has handled things since cleaning house and hiring on new staff. I'm truly optimistic with our front office whereas before, I was cautiously optimistic but deep down, I didn't hold out much hope. It always seemed like we settled for such and such instead of going out and getting what we wanted, or worse, we made panicked & uninformed decisions. The latter being drafting Johnny Manziel and a couple others.

Not this time; I'm loving Hue Jackson and I love how our draft went. I was kinda hoping we'd pick up Goff but I doubt anyone could foresee the first overall pick getting traded due to how rare it is for that to happen. So instead we wheeled and dealed and made out like bandits. We stockpiled draft picks for next year while at the same time, getting the guys we wanted, nay, needed.

And then we snagged RG3... I don't expect much from RG3 but he's going to be playing like a man with something to prove. Because he has too. If he doesn't play like an all-star, he's still a serviceable placeholder (provided he doesn't get injured, knock on wood) until we do get our franchise QB. And we don't have to pay him hardly anything; If he plays his ass off and we end up having to pay out all of his incentives ($7 million total), well, then that probably means the team is doing fantastic (or at the very least, playing above expectations) and it will be money well spent. He would still be only the 23rd highest paid QB in the league if he hits all his incentives.

As opposed to what? I personally think it's more popular now that it has been in a long, long time. I think the internet (as a platform) has helped people who normally wouldn't have had access to such news and information to have greater accessibility to cosmology and space related knowledge. It's helped a new generation of people get interested and pumped. Especially with the social media outreach by all the governmental space agencies, like NASA, JAXA and ESA. You have astronauts tweeting from space, live video feeds from the ISS, and you can watch rocket test launches in real time. Before the internet, most of that was basically impossible, though they did occasionally live broadcast shuttle launches. I remember vividly watching the challenger disaster when I was like 6 or 7 years old.

Can a ship get through the cosmic dust without making contact with a dust particle?

Not traveling a serious/realistic distance. Even in the voids between galaxies, there's still "stuff". Even in one of the most empty places in the universe (Bootes void) there is still atoms at approximately 1 per square meter (I think that's the right estimation, it's been a while since I hit the books).

What's the average distance between dust particles?

Depends on where you're at. If you're within a galaxy, the distance isn't that far apart.

What we will see if we are in the middle of a dust cloud?

Our solar system is actually right in the middle of a dust cloud. :) Source: http://news.discovery.com/space/galaxies/space-cloud-galaxy-solar-system-120201.htm

There will always be weird corrupt psuedo-oligarchies in any community.

Some can be pretty "clique-y" at times, but to call them a corrupt oligarchy is a tad extreme. More than a tad if I'm being blunt, it's complete hyperbole. :P

it's marginally harder for them to do much more than take corporate cash

I've been on reddit 9 years. I've modded 3 of reddit's largest subreddits for 6+ years. Not once in my entire time here has anyone legitly offered me cash in exchange for doing something for them. It just doesn't happen. Has it happened on reddit before? Maybe, it's possible I guess. But your wording implies that it's something common when that couldn't be further from the truth. The admins here can peek into modmails, PMs and private subreddits if they were so inclined. If such 'corporate shilling' was going on, there would be much more fallout that would be visible (especially in the drama and meta subreddits). But that's not happening because what you suggest isn't happening. The admins wouldn't let that stuff go on unchecked and that would be required in your hypothesis.

Do people want to moderate because they enjoy or get intoxicated from the power? Sure, some younger kids who find their way into a mod position probably do, but modding for money? Yeah, in my experience that's just not happening. And those who do moderate only for power don't last very long because in all honesty, there's not really much power to begin with (and it's quite obvious to the other mods that is what's happening so they'd be quick to remove that toxic element). Moderators are glorified janitors. Sure, we can curate discussions a bit if we were so inclined, but we're still only 1 vote. We don't have a button that instantly puts something on the front page with 10k upvotes. That still has to happen organically despite anything we do.

i can tell you the core circle of moderators are absolutely cancerous. I'm talking the "power mods"...have the max 3 defaults under their belt

Would you consider me one of those problem mods? I mod 3 defaults but I don't think I'm part of any clique (I rarely use slack). I pretty much do my own thing.

(Disclaimer, I've modded with AdamDaze before)

Also, I think it should be noted that when I was added on as a mod to all three of those subreddits, they weren't defaults at the time. In fact, 2 of the 3 subreddits (space and TIL) were tiny, TIL only had ~5k subscribers when I joined the mod team. Now it has 10 million. That's quite the growth. Not all of us were/are power hungry. Some of us 'forrest gumped' our way into those positions. :P

People love to complain about the decreasing quality in Reddit but I've found once you move past the front page that hasn't really been the case.

Believe it or not, the quality has changed. It has gone down. But that happened around the time subreddits were introduced so the people that usually claim it hasn't (the ones that were here 5 years ago circa digg migration) probably didn't notice much of a change because if there has been one, it wasn't particularly noticeable. If you want to see what reddit was like "in the old days", when the quality was a bit higher, check out news.ycombinator.com (aka hackernews). That's almost exactly what reddit was like before subreddits. The comment section there is like how reddit used to be back in the old days. I visit that site almost as much as I do reddit now.

Now I'm not saying you can't find that kind of quality here on reddit, I was only speaking in broad/sweeping/general terms about reddit overall. You can still find great & quality content in niche subreddits. You just have to subscribe to the right subreddits.

I've been here for 9, before subreddits even existed. Though, I was on the net 10-15 years before that (I'm old). Anyways, let me try to think of something that's different that people rarely mention. Hmm... Porn sites. Oh they existed, in approximately the same number they do now. But they weren't video-based sites. Too much bandwidth for our dial-up modems. And realplayer was basically the only video player around (not sure if quicktime had been invented yet). They were all image based and text based (erotica) websites. So you'd click on a thumbnail or text-based description of the image and then you'd wait for it to load. If you were on a slow dial up or had lag, it could take like 4-5 minutes for a single nudie gif to load. And it would load from the top down so the anticipation was part of the fun.

Most of my early internet days, however, was spent playing MUDs. Basically, text-based versions of role-playing games. I played one that was both PvW and PvP so that helped me learn to type and read real quick. I learned more about typing/computers in my first few weeks playing that game than in 2 years in highschool.

It's kind of interesting really, to read the discussions/arguments about late round QBs. People point to successful late round QBs like Brady as proof you can find talent deep in the draft. It kinda grinds my gears a bit because they're ignoring the 100 other late round QBs who weren't successful. Tom Brady was the exception to the rule, an anomaly. Can you find a superbowl-winning QB late in the draft? Sure, it's possible. But it's also possible that a winning lottery ticket rides a breeze and floats right into your hand tomorrow. Doesn't mean the odds of either happening are in your favor. :D

Reddit's FAQ answers this. Quite simply, it doesn't work (and there are 10 years of data to prove this). There have been dozens upon dozens of discussions over the years in /r/TheoryOfReddit with mountains of data to back it up. It just doesn't work.

Now that's one thing we don't do. :) We enforce the rules objectively. However, your definition of "political" might be different from ours, but we are consistent within our own definition.

[–]relic2279 -6ポイント-5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thank goodness we have your sacred "Oldest and First rule" to decide which content gets to die in /r/politicalvideo

Well, the point was that this subreddit didn't up and decide one day to disallow political submissions - it has never allowed them from the very beginning (over 6 years ago). This isn't something new. Which leads me to my next point:

decide which content gets to die in /r/politicalvideo

Well the alternative before that was literally nothing at all, since we didn't allow political videos and removed them on sight. /r/PoliticalVideo is our attempt to give people an outlet for those submissions while at the same time, keeping the quality of /r/Videos intact. Is it a perfect solution? No, of course not. I don't think a perfect solution exists. But if /r/PoliticalVideo gets popular, it will be a good solution. :)

If only there was a "/r/Politics" or something with like 3 million+ subscribers. Or even a "/r/worldpolitics" or any of the dozen spin off political themed subreddits. It's a shame those subreddits don't exist. :P

videos 内の The-Sublimer-One によるリンク How to Colonise the Galaxy

[–]relic2279[M] -7ポイント-6ポイント  (0子コメント)

You have it backwards. :) This subreddit has never, ever allowed political videos. It was the oldest and first rule -- you can use wayback machine and see for yourself. /r/PoliticalVideo was created as a way for people who like those kind of videos to submit them. We even link to the subreddit in big bold red letters at the top in order to draw attention to it. We're trying to grow the subreddit but that takes time. It's not going to get 3 million subscribers overnight, growing subreddits takes months and years.

If we were actually against political videos, we wouldn't be making the effort to grow the subreddit, nor would we be advertising the crap out of it. :) As for the reason for the rule in the first place? Political videos would overrun the subreddit. Without the rule, one type of content would dominate the subreddit and for a topic as general as "videos", letting one type of content dominate is bad for the overall quality of the sub. The rule is there to ensure that the content topics are diverse.

I would literally be amazed if the number 1 pick is traded. So much so that I'd plunk down $100 on it not being traded (I'd plunk down more, but that's all I have to spare). It's just so rare for it to happen in this day and age. And it almost always ends in disaster for at least 1 team so it's becoming even more rare due to the horrible outcome that tends to follow gambling away your team's future. I mean, I might be a little nervous if there was a Luck or something in this year's draft and while I'm starting to warm up to Goff, he's not Luck or Manning.

It's either a smokescreen or some writer trying to drive hits to a website. :P

we're losing our moon

We're not technically losing it. If given enough time, the moon and the Earth will reach equilibrium and the moon will stop moving away. Unfortunately, even if the moon was on an escape trajectory, the time it would take to leave Earth's orbit is longer than the Sun's lifetime. Which means the sun would swell up and will likely swallow the earth and the moon before the moon could say sayonara. :)

(I say "likely" because there are a few theoretical models of the sun swelling up and losing enough mass which causes Earth's orbit to flank out and move out away from the sun - escaping it. It's still much too close for life to survive, though. It would be closer to the Sun than Mercury is now).

Honestly, I don't think the first overall pick is up for trade and I wonder why anyone even bothers talking about it. I mentioned it a while back, but the first pick of the draft simply isn't traded. Ever. It's been traded like 2 times in the last 40 years and both times have had crazy, extenuating circumstances which forced the team to trade. For example, those two times it was traded (effectively traded, anyways), was with Eli Manning and John Elway. Both players said they weren't going to play for the team drafting them. It's just not worth it to trade the first pick away so nobody does it. I'm not sure why we even have to entertain the idea since it's not going to happen. :)
