Something about Twitter makes otherwise accomplished and successful people into insufferable asshats. I imagine someone like Dawkins deep down wants to tweet about some new development in evolutionary biology but he knows he'll get a hundred times more likes by saying we should have religious tests at the border or some garbage like that.

The way internet audiences congratulate this kind of attitude perpetuates it. Eventually, the contrarian tide will come in and everyone will become a pinko lefty again, but for now, vitriol condensed into 140 characters is one of the best ways to net likes/retweets/subs for well-known individuals.

Let's talk about Notch, baby Let's talk about you and me

Notch is like the pinnacle example of "Never meet your heroes" in my mind. When Minecraft was just starting to get big, I loved this dude. He basically single-handedly made one of the most popular video games ever and built himself an enormous amount of money purely off of his own skill and creativity. And that's amazing! This guy started with nothing and managed to get super rich doing what he loved.

And then he started tweeting and oh lord, did things go downhill from there.

fat skeleton with purple hair type comments

Wasn't his ex(?)-wife kind of chubby with dyed hair? I think the sudden fame and success kind of broke him.

I remember hearing about him getting married just a couple years ago. Did they already separate?

Huh, apart from a few snarky comments about those decadent American progressives who want all te world to use the same vocabulary as them, I don't see any tweets remotely touching the topic of feminism. Or were those longer ago?

Just look at these people revering Notch as if he was their leader or even a god.

He did create Minecraft, which is the defining video game for the current generation of tweens/teens. It makes sense that kids in the 8-16 range would be kind of worshipful.

I feel less bad having switched from MCPE to Survivalcraft on my phone now.

He has so much money that telling the truth doesn't matter. +3680

sounds like someone an orange I know

celebrating a man openly saying he did something just for money

reddit is tech-bro-libertarian, of course they adore that kind of thing

I would be willing to bet money, though, that the people you quoted all have posting histories in the_donald.

fun fact for you minn, the first libertarian i ever met was a know-it-all euphoric atheist white dude in uni who wore a duster and a fedora everywhere he went... it was like reddit in a single man.

So Notch has gone from complaining about how he doesnt fit in with the rich clique to trolling social media for attention? Honestly, it sounds like the dude needs a new hobby.

Did you know he's a mod over at /r/drama? Like most of the mods there, he doesn't actually do anything, but I thought you might be interested.

He never responds to our pings. :\

He was also modded in /r/sweden last week.

/r/drama sucks

It's got more going for it since SRD was neutered, but that isn't saying much.

I don't know if I would consider /r/drama's "actively trying to be terrible" community better than SRD's "let's pretend we are neutral" bullshit.

It's also just pathetically clubhousey in there

SRD pretends to be neutral? Really? Doesn't seem so in the comments.

The mods have actively tried pushing it in that direction for a while now.
