          Louis van Gaal will take over as manager of Manchester United from the 2014/15 season. He has signed a three-year contract.

          Louis, 62, has managed at the top level of European football for over 20 years and in that time has won domestic titles and domestic cups in three countries, as well as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, an Intercontinental Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and domestic Super Cups in Holland and Germany.

          He will take up his post after the FIFA World Cup, where he will manage the Dutch national team.

          Ryan Giggs, English football's most decorated footballer and the United player with most appearances in the club's history, has been appointed as assistant manager. Ryan took charge of the first team for the last four matches of the 2013/14 season.

          Announcing the appointments, Ed Woodward said: "In Louis van Gaal, we have secured the services of one of the outstanding managers in the game today. He has achieved many things in his career to date and Old Trafford provides him with a fitting stage on which to write new chapters in the Manchester United story. "Everyone is very excited about this new phase in the club's history. His track record of success in winning leagues and cups across Europe throughout his career makes him the perfect choice for us.

          "People know him as a larger than life character but I have also been extremely impressed by his intelligence, thoughtful approach to the role and his diligence. I'm looking forward to working with him.

          "I'm delighted that Louis has chosen Ryan as his assistant. Ryan's association with the club spans over two decades and his knowledge and stature will be of great use to Louis. In addition, this is a fantastic opportunity for Ryan to learn his trade alongside a world-class manager whose attacking instincts and belief in youth are tailor-made for Manchester United.”

          Louis van Gaal said: "It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history."

          Joel Glazer said: "I am delighted that Louis will be our next manager. He has an outstanding pedigree as a coach, both as a man who motivates his teams to win trophies and as someone who believes in giving young players a chance to prove their worth. I am sure he will make a big impression on the club, the players and the fans."Avie Glazer said: "Louis joins us at an exciting time and has already communicated some great ideas for how the club can move forward. The board is right behind him in his plans and everyone here is already looking forward to the start of next season.”

          Ryan Giggs said: "I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager. Louis van Gaal is a world-class coach and I know I will learn a lot about coaching from being able to observe and contribute at such close quarters. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I'm delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role."

          Frans Hoek is the Netherlands' goalkeeping coach and has been instrumental in the development of keepers such as United legend Edwin van der Sar and Barcelona's Victor Valdes. He joins as assistant coach, specialising in goalkeeping.

          Marcel Bout joins as assistant coach, specialising in opposition scouting, having previously worked for Bayern Munich, Telstar, AZ, FC Volendam and Feyenoord.

            Regarding Franz Hoek, I've met him, and he comes across an extremely intelligent guy and coach. He was holding a course for directors of coaching, at a local youth club, and the problem was being discussed of our club wanting to play out the back, but not being able to as our players 8 - 10 year old who were in goal couldn't kick far enough. We were talking about potential solutions in defenders pushing up and coming back quickly to receive in space, changing the formation slightly for goal kicks mid dropping down etc. His response. Put the best player in goal. If you want to build from the back, you need the best player with his feet to start the moves.

            I'm tired of this idea. The class of 92 is great and all as players. But are unproven as coaches. I'd rather have proven coaches then unproven players step in. At this point I'd rather have Solskjaer as a coach at the moment because at least he has experience.

            I get Giggs, he's smart enough and has the demeanour, pedigree, experience, etc to manage one day.

            I get Scholes, as a coach, simply because he's one of the most impressive footballing minds to play the game, even if you ignore his other attributes.

            I'd understand Becks if they found some way to bring him back around, he's got unbelievable experience from every major league and was an absolute model professional, has the potential to be a great coach.

            However, I do not get Nicky Butt or Phil Neville or the potential for Gary Neville to get involved. As great as they were for United, and they will always be remembered as such, they are not objective 'greats' like that.

            They could go and get experience and prove themselves and come back like any other coach, but I don't think they deserve to jump the first 5 rungs like that.

            I'm on board with everything you're saying but I feel like Gary Neville could be the best coach of the lot. Gary was the captain remember. He knew how to get everyone to follow him and how to motivate his players to play their hearts out every game. I never realized how much of a football mind he was until I began watching his "punditry". But hey really knows the ins and outs of football. I feel like if any of the 6 were to end up as coaches down the road I would like it to be Gary.

            To piggy back on your post. From a Bayern fan point of view van Gaal is an interesting manager. No doubt your playing style will improve and become more attack based as well as disciplining a lot of players. In the 2 years he was manager he sold our captain because of a disagreement. So he definitely isn't afraid to make moves with big names.

            In terms of transfers, he's very big on bringing players from the academy and in the years he managed us he brought in a lot of youth players and really helped them develop. He turned Schweinsteiger from a winger to a amazing CM, Muller from a striker to an attacking midfielder, he experimented with Alaba a little bit on the outside which led to him being where he is now. However because of this, he doesn't always favor bringing in new players. I'm not sure if it was rumors or not but he did block some transfers that management had negotiated. So don't be too surprised if you guys are not as active as you expect.

            Overall, he's a great 1-3 year manager who's perfect for fixing a big team that fell off a bit. He'll bring a no nonsense approach with tons of attacking flair. He will conflict with management and I can't see him being a long term coach for you guys but for the situation at hand, he's perfect.

              Yeah I think a variety of quality coaches will be a huge benefit to the guy. As good as Woods and Steele may have been, having fresh ideas and input from someone who's had such a distinguished coaching career can in no way be bad.

              Unless they hate each other or something but you can't legislate for that.

              Looking at the keepers he's worked with in the past, Van Der Sar, Valdes, I think he'll help a lot with De Gea's distribution. One area he can definitely improve on.

              Really? I think his distribution is pretty great. I think his ability to come for crosses and be dominant in the box is still his weakness, despite huge amounts of improvement.

              He does not make mistakes with his distribution, which comes down to his awareness/cool head, which is perfectly fine. However, he regularly lets himself come under pressure and has to revert to kicking it long, other keepers like Neuer and Valdes always manage to retain possession with faster and more accurate passing.

              It's not a mark against De Gea, just an area which he can excel even further at. Make no mistake he still has huge room for improvement in many areas, as good as he is now, he will become much, much better.

              Hoek never trainer Kahn, Kahn was already retired when Hoek joined the club. Hoek trained the likes of Butt and Kraft at Bayern and wasn't kept after Van Gaal left. Neuer wanted his Toni Tapalovic as his coach
